I was at a Guitar Center in the early-mid 2000's looking at basses and there was a kid in there playing Chick Magnet! I was like no way I thought I was the only one who learned to play with that song!
MXPX was my childhood and the entire reason I got my bass. I cannot thank you enough for the music and for the memories. Every time I've had a horrible day I'll throw on something like Move to Bremerton or Teenage Politics and just vibe. Thank you guys seriously, from the bottom of my heart.
I grew up in rural SE Indiana and none of my friends had ever even heard of MxPx but I was addicted to Life in General in 97. It was the first bass line I ever learned and I had no idea that so many people had the same experience. Love you guys.
This song was the first song I learned on my bass guitar. I had heard this baseline and after that I knew I needed a bass guitar. I bought it and after a month of it hanging on the wall I picked it up and learned this song. 1 year later and I’m still playing bass and I’ve learned so much!
Thanks to Mike Herrera to being the cool ass dude that he is and for healing my teenage years. All my friends loved this band and ended up playing in a band because of them. First ever concert at the age of 15 was MXPX and he played chic Magnet 🧲
When I was in high school, me and my friends played a punk cover band. We played two songs no one knew And our last song was chick magnet. It was the only song we played that was on the radio at the time. It completely changed our set and we actually got the audience to buy in. I went from trying to hide on stage to rocking out on the badass bass line.
This was the first song I learned on bass back in the day. 1st it took me a week to learn how to play it and make it sound good, and then another month until I was able to sing and play it at the same time. My daughter just got a bass a month ago and I played Chick Magnet for her, she was like "that was your first song?!". Now her first song is Dark Horse by Katy Perry :)
This song has a special place in my heart. Back in the 90's I was part of a praise and worship team in our church youth group. Our 12 year old drummer got more attention from the girls than an especially cute puppy and we used to play Chick Magnet to tease/celebrate him. Shout out to Steve, Cody and the infamous Scotty Mac, Great people and good memories!
Mike, just so you know the only RUclips videos and podcasts I listen to as fast as yours, is the JRE. Just saying, the fact that you’re right there with my JRE obsessive priority, it’s pretty big damn praise! Keep on keepin on my brother!!
It's always cool to hear the backstories on how songs get made like this off other riffs/licks you guys play. It's inspiring and it goes to show writing new material is just as easy as using some stuff from other songs to start a new idea. Good advice, Mike. Thanks for sharing the vid.
I saw you guys live back in February, and the fact that you guys played both Chick Magnet, and Punk Rawk Show would have killed 5 year old me. They're the first songs I can remember listening to, and genuinely liking, and hearing them always makes me happy.
Keep the play throughs coming! Thanks for all the great tunes guys!! Big part of my inspiration as a young musician!! You guys were always super tight and sounded great live!! Keep rockin!!
The true romance and princess bride is all very true, I'll probably never see that again. I hope you have I saw you on that show and the old videos were pretty rad thanks. Still blows my mind I'm talking to you guys but I really kicked Mike in the nuts. That's stinks but a blessing also.
It was this song that made me a fan. I had heard "Move to Bremerton" on the radio and liked it. I liked Mike's voice and the 50's do wop feel mixed with a punk sound was cool, but when I saw them play Chick Magnet live on MTV"s Oddville they crushed it, they looked cool, sounded great, and I went and bought Life in General the next day.
Yea I remember when I was a young teen in the late 90s and evey time i would be around some cats playing instruments , i'd always hear someone playing this on bass!
We need an MxPx storyteller session. I enjoyed hearing the origins of the song.
Agreed. I've only ever been a casual MxPx fan, but Mike is great and his stories are always good.
They did a documentary in I think the early 2000s and this was mentioned! So rad.
Patrick McCue I still have that on vhs.
Thomas Duncan heck yeah man
He did a few acoustic shows like that in TX last year.
"If you carry your childhood with you, you never become older."
I remember this album when it came out... And man it blew my young mind! And I still get the good feels and goose bumps from it at 40 years old 😂🤘🏻
Rawk! Would love to see more BASS play throughs!
Yes, best way to learn mxpx Bass lines 🤘
Agreed! Great way to see the heart behind the lines too.

Would love to see a play through of how it’s played live. The little runs Mike does always throw me when I try to figure it out
Last time I saw them live the little run was (C e f g f f e f e) starting on the A string with all other notes being on the d string.
This and combat chuck by five iron frenzy were two of my early go-tos for learning cool bass lines

One of the best MXPX albums!!!
First bass line I ever learned! Great video

Totally one of the first bands I fell in love with while learning to play
Can’t believe I’ve been playing that song wrong for 25 years..
Let me guess, you were playing it in D instead of C...
Yeah a couple of spots I was “pffff, mike doesn’t even know how to play his own song! Oh wait 😅😅)
❤️❤️❤️ Best chick magnet Bass Cover on RUclips 😁✌️

My high school band in 1998/99 played chick magnet at our talent show and did a whole theatrical scene on the side of the stage.
This song reminds me of my friend Justin.
A true chick magnet.
He’s been gone for two years now.
I love and miss you brother
Also lost a brother in punk rock recently, so I feel you dude. Sorry for your loss😔❤️
Omg! I forgot about this song! It’s like the 2nd song I learned to play when I first started playing bass 16 years ago.
Same here. I still play it every now and then to warm up.
