Never met (heard) a horn band I didn’t like. Tower of Power is my all-time favorite.

Your first three on the list I agree with. The last two forget about it. The Bay Area had three of the greatest horn band ever. Sons of Champlin, Cold Blood and Tower of Power. Any one of those three should be on your list instead of Ides of March or AWB

I am SO HAPPY that Lighthouse the great Canadian Band is mentioned here several Times I am unhappy about the exclusion of Steely Dan's Horn tunes ie. Babylon Sisters, Deacon Blues etc.

What about Chase? Get It on- their Hit - early mid 70s wicked tune with organ solo in middle, Bill Chase was the leader on Trumpet. or Lighthouse(Canadian) not near as big as BST. Excellent videos John

Great list! Missing a few other notables including the band Chase (“Get it On”), Lighthouse (“One Fine Morning”) and of course the incredible Tower of Power (“You’re Still a Young Man”, “So Very Hard to Go” and many others).

My favourite horn band is Soft Machine, but I’ve always enjoyed Chicago, as well; who are the definitive horn band, influencing so many groups in the late 1960/early 70’s. I’ve read that, Soft Machine’s ex-drummer, Robert Wyatt mention it was Chicago who gave them the inspiration to expand to a septet, for their groundbreaking “Third” album from 1970.

Horn bands I like from the 1970s includes Blood Sweat & Tears, Chicago and Lighthouse. Earth Wind and Fire are also great too. David Clayton Thomas is also a good singer, who I like very much. Cheers! ✌️🇨🇦

Also, Mom's Apple Pie, a relatively unknown 70's band, were similar to Chicago in their brass-rock sound. Aside from the controversial album cover artwork, their debut LP is musically excellent.

I love your show, but I take exception to your reporting in this story regarding Blood Sweat & Tears. It would seem that your research on BST must have come from the band's Wikipedia page, in which the same inaccurate information also falsely implies that the band came together as one, and then elected Al Kooper as leader. Al Kooper was the one who formed the band after leaving the Blues Project because they rejected his idea of adding horns to the band. Al was inspired to marry horns with rock & blues, not by James William Guercio and The Buckinghams as reported, but rather by Maynard Ferguson when Al heard him as a teenager, and then reminded of this after hearing The Electric Flag at the Monterey Pop Festival. After leaving LA and the Blues Project, he returned to his native New York City where he then began the process of assembling what would become BST, inviting his old band mate Jim Fielder, as well as Steve Katz, Bobby Columby and Eric Andersen to join. They became the nucleus of the band at first, later adding more horn players. Al by this time was a seasoned producer and arranger, as well as a guitar and organ player. Having played on the recordings and tours of 3 of Dylan's most important works. He was the organist on "Like a Rolling Stone" and other Dylan classics. And that is why he was the initial leader of the band. Al then invited John Simon to produce the band's album, again NOT James William Guercio. A year later, Steve Katz and Bobby Columby were instrumental in kicking him out of the band, citing that he was too much of a perfectionist. It was then that James William Guercio came in the picture with BST. Also worth noting is that Al Kooper made many more important contributions to Rock History, having discovered and gotten Lynyard Skynyard signed to MCA Records, as well as producing, engineering and playing on their first 3 albums. Al Kooper is the one who played the organ on Freebird. Al Kooper wrote This Diamond Ring for Gary Lewis & the Playboys. He played piano on Jim Hendrix's Electric Ladyland. Played piano, organ and french horn on the Rolling Stone's Let It Bleed album, and on You Can't Always Get What You Want. He played organ on The Who's - The Who Sell Out, and the seminal album Who's Next. He produced The Tubes's first album. Played piano on George Harrison's All Those Years Ago. He was with Harrison when they learned John Lennon had been killed. Al played organ on Roy Orbison's last great album Mystery Girl. He toured with Joe Walsh (Ordinary Average Guy tour). And these are just "some" of the highlights of his illustrious career. Anyway, I just wanted to correct the misinformation about BST. But heck, you should do a show about Al Kooper. Read his autobiography, Backstage Passes and Backstabbing Bastards. It's not only a very informative walk down the history of rock music, but it's a hoot that will have you rolling in the aisles. He's very funny.

Blood sweat and tears played at woodstock 1969 , they weren't in the film, according to a interview by David Clayton Thomas, he and the band were stoned out of their minds when they took the stage at one o'clock in the morning, Thomas said they were smoking weed hours before they took the stage and could not barely function , and there performance was terrible, that's why they were not in the film,
