    Hi Mr Toby,
    I wonder, witch lens is sharper between the Canon 18-135mm STM &
    the Canon 55mm-250mm STM?

    Hi Toby, What would be your recommendation between
    18-135mm STM and 55-250mm STM?
    Thank

    Very nice review. I am going to purchase a new 55 to 250 lens. Should I buy the STM version or the older version.

    I bought this marvelous 55 250 stm a couple of weeks ago and the images taken are far more sharper compared to the old 55-250

    CameraRec Toby here is my dilemma...
    I am struggling between 55-250 STM and the 70-200L F4 IS. I know that their price difference is immense and I would really prefer to keep my wallet fat and happy. On the other hand, I do not want to buy something now that I might regret later and end up spending more money on the long run.
    Is the 55-250 that good? Or I will be missing the L features?
    I am a hobbyist photographer, I only do stills and usually that's portrait or landscape stuff.
    What do you think I should do?

    • @science4ever1
      @science4ever1 9 лет назад +2

      I know this is a real late reply but if you are not making money shooting photos then I wouldn't bother with the "L" lenses. The durability is what makes the lens more expensive than the picture quality. So if you are a hobbist then you should definitely get the 55-250STM. Most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a picture taken with the STM lens or an L lens. I would spend money on other accessories such as speed light which would make your picture look more professional. I hope this helps.

      Africa4science thanks for the feedback.
      Not late at all, as I have yet to make up my mind. In fact I chose to hold back, in case sigma released an art 50-135 for cropped cameras. Unfortunately, no sign of that happening...

    After researching left,right, up and down I took delivery two weeks ago of my Canon 70D plus the 18-55 kit and the older but (new and unused) 55-250 IS II.
    Granted I am 52 and deafer than average, but I have not found the focusing noise to be an issue. It probably helps that I use a Rhode Stereo Videomic Pro.
    As a 'Camera + 2 lenses bundle' I like the full 18-250mm (28-400 in the 70D crop sensor) range over the 18-135 kit lens as I live on a Game Ranch and will use the extra reach.
    I reckon Toby is very correct in recommending the Canon 70D together with the 18-55 and the 55-250.
    When I have sold some of my yearling bulls in December I plan to pick up a wide-angle lens as per Toby's recommendation for filming my real-estate videos.
    That will be it for me on lenses.
    Need money for Go-Pro and Quadcopter (my excuse is to do aerial footage of farms I sell) real reason = kewl Big Boy Toy :-)
    Thanks for another honest and succinct video Toby.

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  11 лет назад

      The Big Boy Toy is on my list too - I only need the quad copter but I don't have ANY excuses to buy so I don't think it will be under my xmas tree this year. I have done some testing with a rode mic and a few lenses - haven't actually viewed the results yet but I suspect that is solving the lens noise for you. Thanks for your input!

    A lot of people says, Changing the lens would be tedious, and it is a good idea to have a 18--250mm Lens rather than getting both 18-55 and 55-250mm Lenses. Is it really that inconvenient to Change Lenses?

    I have the Canon 100D (SL1) and bought the 55-250mm IS non STM to go with it, only to find a few months later, that Canon brought out the STM version. I also have the 18-135 STM, and the difference in the image quality (in favour of the 18-135) is IMHO a lot better. Question - would it be worth upgrading to the 55-250mm STM version and selling off the non STM version? Thanks for your video by the way!

  • @brac97
    @brac97 9 лет назад

    Toby, I have a Canon 70D. so much debate internally about a telephoto zoom. I shoot 95% stills. Most people say the 55-250mm STM is excellent value, but some are split between excellent image quality and mediocre IQ. I can get all lenses second hand, so the STM is around $250, 70-200 F4 IS around $800 with 1.4x TC another $200, and a 70-300 L IS for around $1000. All choices would give me 5.6 at the long end. What I am unsure of is the IQ worth the 4x price tag of these L lenses? are they really 4x better? I understand that of these 3 the IS is actually worse or older on the 70-200 F4 IS. If the IQ isn't hugely different, perhaps I'd be better off getting the STM used and another prime. I don't know how much marketing is affecting my brain right now...

    I love to take pictures for small animals and birds. I use Canon T4i body. I have a Tamron 28-200 and a Sigma 70-300. Both are poor in quality. I need a 300 mm range but with a smaller budget. My question is Canon 70-300 a good choice or I should consider a 300 mm FD prime?

    Hi, nice review ! You said in the video that 55-250 will be enough for 99%, because that extra money is not worth for the 70-300 IS USM. I would like to know if the Tamron 70-300 VC is worth that extra 70$ over 55-250 STM, as Tamron has a wonderful VC, a longer reach (about 80mm on a crop body like 70D) & better AF (manual focusing possible) considering photos and not videos ? The Tamron was the reason I saved my money, till I watched your video and got a bit confused now.

  • @iDX1701
    @iDX1701 10 лет назад

    Hi Toby great video again. I have the 55-250 IS version 1 and it is extremely sharp, but the AF is REALLY slow and noisy. I know the STM isn't noisy, but is it fast now? I have an 18-135 STM for reference (and I feel that lens focuses quickly).
    Also I assume I'll get a 70-200 F4 IS in a few years but in the meantime would the difference between the 70-200 and 55-250 STM (in image quality not build quality) lenses be drastic?

    Hi, I am about to buy a 55-250mm lens. I will use it for still photography, like surf, some sport, and other medium range shooting. For the surf photography I will mostly use auto focus and I know the stm has much quicker auto focusing. I have a relatively small budget.
    The lens would be used on my Canon 600d. Should I get the stm version or the non stm? Thanks for your help.

    STM does smooth focusing that is better for video in some cases. But does this smooth focusing technology cause trouble to focus very fast & instantly while still image capturing??? Which would be better for casual bird photography - IS stm or IS ii?

    Your videos are fantastic. I'm in the process of buying a Canon D760, I haven't got the camera yet. But thanks to your videos I have learned which lenses I want. Just an hour ago I bought a three month old, like new, 55-250 stm lens for $100 from a nice guy with and ad on C/L. The seller put the lens on his 70D then spent an hour showing me all about the lens. Thanks Toby.

    Actually the difference is lot bigger currently the 55-250 non stem version can be bought on ebay for around 150 new from Japan. While the the stem version retails for over $300. So maybe you are talking in store retail is different.

    Can I use this value lens to get acceptably good results when being used for capturing the occasional portrait of friends and family. I have been absolutely astonished at the quality of the Canon 70-200 but I am not at the skill level as a photographer to justify laying out the kind money necessary to get this lens. Should I considering the Canon 55-250 as an alternative?

    I think is a great review, my experience was from the Kit lens 18-55 to the 18-135 STM. I think the lens and build quality is better and then the fact the focusing just works better meant my images were generally sharper. Not necessarily due to the glass but I think the focusing makes a huge contribution.

    Hello sir. Thanks for all your videos here for us fellow (uninformed) shooters. less than a month ago I purchased the Canon 70d, previously having the T2i. I purchased my new camera without a lens, intending to use my 15-85, my 50mm, and my 70-300 USM. With video not being of prime concern,... do you think I should sell my 70-300 that I paid around 650.00 for, and buy this 55-250 STM lens? It sounds awfully good. Thanks for your advice.

    Hello, I am an ornithologist introducing myself into the EOS Rebel photography. I used to have an old Canon power-shot S3IS with 12x optical zoom and I've improved my abilities over the years (lets say I'm getting into decent pictures now lol). That camera died a couple of years ago and now I have received as a gift an EOS rebel T6, but I just have the 18-55mm that came with the camera. I have been considering to buy the 55-250mm IS STM because of the good reviews and the price, since I am in a very tide budget right now. My main goal is to get as close as possible to the subjects (birds and other wildlife) as my budget allows me. Would you think this would be a good fit for my me? Thanks

    Hi Toby!
    I have a Rebel T5i with 18-55mm IS STM lens. I love landscape photography. Therefore, was planning to buys telephoto lens. Looking at the options, my heart goes all out for 70-200mm f2.8L II IS zoom lens but it's way out of my budget as of now. With the remaining categories, I'm unable to decide the best choice out of 55-250mm STM IS, 70-300mm IS USM & 75-300mm III IS USM lens.. Please advise accordingly as currently I haven't reached the professional level. Thanks a bunch!
    Regards,

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  10 лет назад +4

      I personally am not a fan of the do-it-all lenses, the lenses that cover 18-200 or more. They are certainly convenient but in my opinion you make sacrifices in image quality and convenience. The 18-140 range is about as high as I think someone should go. A lens like the 55-250 is only a 3x zoom lens so you get far less distortion and other problems vs a lens like the 18-270 which covers a 10x range and sacrifices quality to do so.

    Toby, nice videos and I like the side by side comparison images. I already have the 70-300mm Canon lens for my 70D. Question I have is whether the noise mine makes is typical. When focusing I get the whir however it seems to "coast" and if I touch the button half way again it re-focuses and coasts again. How long should a typical copy coast after focus? Oh, I got my 300mm for $237 paired with the body. I have the 18-135mm STM also which is a great go to lens. Thank you for the videos. DanaB

    Hi. Really like your videos. Clear and to the point.
    I'm going to buy a canon 70d, was confused between the 18-135mm, or 18-55mm & 55-250mm kit.
    Then I read that a tele extender would help to increase the range of the 18-135mm.
    So would a tele extender + 18-135mm be a better option.
    I'm just a beginner, not looking to make money out of photography.
    I just wanna buy something that'll suffice for (noticeably) decent above average pics/vids and easy to carry around on vacation.
    Also the 70d is weather sealed, is this true for the lenses as well.
    And carrying & changing 2 lenses(18-55,55-250) : how hard / inconvenient is this?
    Or will this be putting the camera at risk of dirt /water ingress.
    thanks very much in advance

    nice video! i have the canon eos m and the es-m 22mm and 18-55, and ef-s 17-85mm (from my older camera is usm) and just got the 85mm f1.8 which is great for photos of people but has to be spot on. think ill get the 55-250mm stm for having that longer range for general shooting in decent lighting conditions and since its much lighther then other such zooms (which works great for the eos-m's lighter weight) would be a nice addition for about 250 bucks on ebay! .

    i had actually just purchased the 70D from Costco for 1399+tax ($1500 total) before the price went up with them. I'm wondering if you think it'd be worth returning and picking it up again from amazon just to get the 55-250STM instead. At 55 i find its too shaky to make good video and sound is already too far to make a difference if its coming from the lens or not. I'm more concerned with picture quality with the 55-250 IS II and the warranty as i know costco will take care of things if the need arises, Amazon has let me down in the past with electronics. I can hold off for another month and a half do you think the price will drop at all again in that time?

    Hi Toby, thanks for your helpful reviews. Recently bought my first DSLR and your videos helped me decide what to get more than any other source (bought the T5i body and the sigma 17-70 contemporary). I'm now looking for a tele lens and am down to the two in this video. It looks to me like the price has come down a lot on the 70-300 lens. When I search on amazon it comes up at $649, but also shows from other vendors there for $379. The titles read the same, but is there something different on the $379 one, or just a great price? If the price between the two are about the same. would you still suggest the 55-250 over the 70-300 for my T5i? Thanks!

    Hello there I just wanted to say thanks for the video review. I'm a quadriplegic and I have currently a Canon 500 D and want to upgrade to the 750 D. I also use the 55-250 mm lens on my 500 D and was wondering if it was worth going to the STM lenses when I buy the new camera. From your description it looks pretty good and worth getting because the focusing is internal so you cannot knock the focusing like you can currently with the old 55-250. I also take the photos using a blower brush which is connected to an old Canon T 70 connection with the plug cut off and have a 3.5 stereo plug connected to go into the 500 D camera. On the end of that T3 adapter you screw in the bubble release for long exposures like the old days in the old cameras and I bite on the blower brush to take photos. I've had that sort of set up got the Canon T 70 camera left. I tried the current 250 mm I have on the new 750 D and it works fine the way I take photos but with your description with the focusing done internally and also much quicker I suppose I think you have talked me into getting the new lenses in kit form like I did with my current 500 D some 10 years ago roughly. I want to do a lot of concert photography and I use the 500 D currently and a 250 mm lens for wherever I get put seating wise so I need to zoom factor. While I was at the camera store looking at 750 I originally had plans to get a 2.8 zoom lens but they are just too heavy for me to hold so will have to stick with the 250 mm and the new camera is a plus factor also on the newer models is that they take 64 GB cards and also five frames per second instead of the current three which I have at the moment with a 500 D. Anyway thank you for the great tutorial Best regards Mark Sydney Australia PS sorry for the long posting to everybody about my situation and camera setup

    Hi Toby,
    I am about to get a Canon 450d with the 40mm stm lens. My problem is I need a lens for longer distance photography like wildlife or sport. It will be for still photography only not video. I don't have a big budget. Should I get the 55-250mm stm or 55-250mm non stm. Thanks for your help, Bailey.

    Hi Toby, wonder if I could have some support/advice regarding a zoom lens, I'm not even a novice or a beginner just a starter upper ☺ and I've been confused about which zoom lens to buy. While looking for a few reviews I stumbled on your channel and I like and respect your opinion regarding the equipment you use. I have a 570D with a 40mm lens but I want to take pictures of scenery (buildings landscapes and basic scenery, my dog and I'm hitting my head on the wall with which zoom lens to buy! Any help would be amazing :) fantastic vids!

    I have a question on what you think of my next purchase. I currently have a T5i with the18-55mm IS STM lens. I am thinking of getting both the 10-18 and the 55-250 IS STM lenses with a 80D body to follow later. I will be using the equipment for our upcoming trip to Scotland, England and maybe the Normandy Coast of France. Does this look like good setup?

      I would get the 55-250 is stm and a 24mm f2.8 pancake since you already have the 18-55.

    Great video review CameraRec Toby, what is your suggestion on which lens I should use for taking videos and night shooting with the Canon T5i? CameraRec Toby, the reason I was asking is because I'm planning on visiting Hong Kong in December and I want to take some awesome pictures and some videos while in a airplane getting views as well and posting them on RUclips and a DVD? Your advice would truly be appreciated and keep up the awesome work!

    Hello thanks for the great review. I would love your advice. I have a Canon 600D camera with a tamron 200mm starter kit lens I have been using for about a year now. I love to photograph wildlife animals and landscapes. I live on a farm in Australia. The two lenses I am deciding between are Canon 55 250 in this review and the Tamron 70 300 VC USD that I have heard good things about. I would love your opinion as to which would suit my needs for this next stage. thanks Mandy

    Hey I'm an entry level photographer. I have the t1i which is a little older camera but still good enough for me being a beginner. I like landscapes, sunsets, portrait shots and don't know which lens to purchase first. 35mm, 50mm, or the 55-250 ? Any advice would be helpful. Also I shoot pics at my kids highschool basketball games.

      The 55-250 is going to give you the best photos for basketball - nice close shots. Your kit lens can handle the general landscapes, sunsets. The 55-250 can do nice portraits too. Excellent review, thank you! I am looking at the Costco 70D bundle that comes with the 18-55 STM & 55-250 IS vII (as well as a free SD card & camera bag). Canon website has the 18-55 and the 55-250 STM bundle that Costco does not have. The price difference is about $ 80 or so.
    You mentioned that the non-STM lens is not so noisy on the 70D; about half of my shooting will be video but I don't see shooting in complete silence.
    Can you answer two questions, please?
    1. Would the noise on the non-STM matter since I won't be doing videos in complete silence?
    2. Is there any optical/ image quality difference between the two versions of the 55-250?
    Thank you.

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  10 лет назад

      I haven't compared those two directly but I have matched the Canon 70-300 vs the Tamron 70-300 and felt that the Canon was better and now matching the Canon 70-300 vs the 55-250 STM with the 55-250 coming out on top in most cases leads me to believe the 55-250 is better than the Tamron 70-300 but honestly they are all quite close. And then I look at the price and feel that the 55-250 offers a better value. Put the savings toward a nice prime, or just in your pocket :)

    Hi. I want to use 24-105 with C100 Mark II. I can't decide between USM II or STM. Main reason why I am inclined towards STM is the noiseless autofocus since sound for my video is captured by shotgun mic mounted on camera. However, I am not sure how much video quality is better in USM II vs STM. Any guidance if I shall go for USM II or STM considering my requirements and irrespective about the cost difference?

  • @eabuseir

    Toby, Great video as usual! It would be great if you can do a new video focusing on the differences between the 55-250mm and 70-300 IS USM Lens. There is a promotion in Amazon with the camera $150 vs $300 and I am sure many people will benefit from this comparison. In my scenario, the 250mm STM is $200 and the 300mm is $173 (cheaper!!). What is your advice? You made your recommendation based on the price in your video, but what if the price is the same? which lens I should keep for still photos? I did some tests to compare 250mm IS II (not STM) vs the 300mm lens and I noticed that in some pictures, the smaller lens was better and in others the bigger one was better. I am pretty sure you did a lot more testing than me, so I would like to hear your feedback: Lens quality, image quality, focus, speed,... etc. Thanks in advance!

    • @photorectoby
      @photorectoby  11 лет назад +1

      Ehab - Not sure I follow your Math. The 70-300 IS USM is selling for $537. subtract $300 and you get $237. The 55-250 STM is selling for $349. Subtract $150 and you get $199. 55-250 IS STM is cheaper. But let's say they cost the same and I was only a photographer - which would I buy. . based on my tests I'd go 55-250 STM- at 250 it was sharp enough that I could crop to zoom and have a sharper image than the 300. And when buying a zoom it is that far focal length that is important to me. But it would be tough if I was upgrading to full frame soon. 55-250 STM can get closer too and I found it to be sharper there. And it is lighter. See where I am going with this? It is hard to make a compelling case for buying the 70-300 in my opinion. It is possible but hard.

      Thanks again Toby! The 300mm lens I bought few days ago when the price dropped at one night then it went back up again. The lens is big and heavy, however in some cases, the 250mm IS II lens won. I just placed another order for the 250mm STM lens and should be delivered tomorrow. I cannot wait to try it. I followed many of your advice ever since I subscribed to your channel. Great job. Appreciate all your help!
