Chandris Lines had a very deep connection with Australia, many people started a journey for a new life on these ships. Sad to see no more Chandris Lines, legends of their time. PATRIS even served as floating accommodation in Darwin for people made homeless after Cyclone Tracey in 1974. Thank you Marcus, well done.

Chandris kept a lot of these beautiful ships in service for many years. That’s how they should be remembered today.

Emigrated to Australia (Adelaide) with my family in 1973 aged 6, sailed on the Ellinis as £10 Poms and returned to the UK in 1977 on the Australis....wonderful memories that will last a life time. I remember the force 10 gales around the Bay of Biscay with waves as tall as the ship and then the total opposite, being in the middle of the Pacific Ocean and the sea being as calm as a mill pond. I watched the sun going down and it made the sea look like orange tinted mercury; then flying fish and dolphins broke the surface, silhouetted against the setting sun. Still one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen...Incredible memories.

I was on that voyage as a 10 pound pom and still here in Australia.....I reckon you meant the Indian Ocean as we went via Cape Town?

On the “Northbound” journey back to Southampton the Australis visited the South Pacific island of Tahiti and we had the privilege of going through the Panama Canal.

I worked on the Ellinis and the Australis in the seventies. Had the time of my life. Wrote a book based on those crazy days called 'Pommy Bastard'. Paperback and Kindle version available from Amazon. Best wishes to all my old crew mates and passengers.

The Chandris ships were significant in nautical history because they transported millions of people to Australia to start a new life there.

I came back to the UK on the Australis at the beginning of 1967 and later went out with a Greek whose godfather was one of the line's owners.:)

I worked on the Britanis 2 years, 1993 - 1995, just before she went to Guantanamo. Loved the old ship. Many memories and many friends made. I have a framed picture in my house.

Thank you Marcus for this lovely video. I was a crew member on several Chandris ships and this was a great reminder (as if I needed one!) of how gracious and elegant their ships were. Brilliant video.

Andrew, the S.S.Britanis was a very special lady for many people. I lived and worked on her several times over a period of ten years and met my husband on her. Like you we both love the old ships and the Britanis had such a wonderful history. I know I was privileged to have had her play such a big part in my life.Thank you for the idea above, maybe someone one day will do just that and we can see the new lives they have helped sustain.

Sailed on the Regina on a Caribbean cruise with my parents in 1970. Grand old ship and many fine memories of our time aboard. Bygone days before the mega monsters that we are failure with today!

I love ocean liners; older ones that have a history and have been through changes and that have had many years of service are the most interesting to me & the ones I find most appealing---much the same with people! I like the variety of the ships here & the variety of their backgrounds. First discovered Chandris in 1975 or early '76 when getting brochures for a school project and there was the Britanis. She's always been special to me. Nearly 40 years later I still have a copy of that brochure.

Does anybody remember SS Fantasia, a smaller ship that sailed the Eastern Med. At the helm Capt Stephanos Toyos. 1964 -1976.Fantasia sailed. I went on it in 1969 and I fell in love with Greece and a Greek young crew member too. 48 years on I still love Greece. He became a captain later on and runs a hotel on Santorini. I never have forgotten him . His brother was the engineer captain on SS Ellinis. Nikos Nomikos - does anybody remember him? S''agapo Elladha!

Probably will never happen but it would be something to see undersea photos of the Regina Magna and the Britanis. I've seen photos taken of both ships as they were sinking; they are remarkable images. I'm so thankful that there were no injuries or deaths and I hope both vessels are now places of undersea life.

I have another idea: Please write a book about your experiences aboard the Britanis! There is so much ocean liner history that doesn't get recorded. I have shelves of books about liners but very little of what's in those books is about first-hand experience. I hope you and others who were aboard the Chandris liners will write or record your memories of being aboard those ships; unique, individual history only you can share and pass along.
