Hi I'm Japanese living in Tokyo. But I've never heard that you shouldn't wear shorts. I also often wear shorts during summer. The only reason I don't wear shorts in winter is simply because it's cold.
Ever since I moved to Aomori in japan, bright colors and body hugging clothes have been stowed away because locals in general don’t want to stick out. It’s a hidden code of conduct that nobody wants to touch on. Dressing for warmth is a priority up north but I guess in Tokyo you can afford to be a bit more fashionable with milder winters.

I was just there and wore some shorts in October on a long early morning walk and then went into Ricoland. Ended up buying motorcycle pants to wear for the train ride back because I felt kind of a vibe. Felt a little weird at times wearing my usual Northern California everyday wear sometimes. One thing coming from California, some Americana/Surf/Skate look seems kind of appreciated here in a modest street style. For example, you could probably show up in full Bass Pro Shop gear and people will love it.
My father tells me that back in the day it was considered inappropriate and completely unacceptable for men to wear shorts in Buenos Aires, it could be in the middle of summer - over 100 degrees and shorts would be frowned upon in the city. Men would not be allowed to ride the bus if wearing shorts. So interesting lol.
After being in Japan so long, it is not up to others to say how to dress appropriately. Content is why people look at live streams, not how one is dress while livestreaming with exception related to fashion subjects. We enjoy the streams. Nice to see Kanae and Rio today. Thanks John.
Good that you point out there are no rules about clothing as such. I guess the point about wearing shorts is similar to how it feels in parts of Italy, Spain and France when wearing shorts: The adult locals never do it and so you will stand out. I am happy that at least some part of the world has not gone totally casual such as is the case in the UK and the US where adults walk around in what can only be described as glorified PJs. Perhaps another aspect to Japan is that at home, Japanese often wear a kind of thin athletic shorts as their pajamas. They sell these as sets with a matching baggy t-shirt at Uniqlo. So wearing shorts outside the home or outside of athletics may seem out of place like wearing swimwear on the train. I don't think it is collectivism as Japanese clothing choices are otherwise incredibly diverse.
I seen workers in pizza shops here in USA , wearing shorts , even in Winter. The culture in Japan is way different than here in USA, way different in many ways.

The people that are giving you a hard time would have a culture shock if they go to Tokyo Disneyland and see what the girls wear there.

It’s madness, and a great way to discover of your Japanese friends, or students, have even one brain cell. Those that question me don’t.
You don't have hairy legs - that helps. I wouldn't subject the citizens of Japan to my hairy milk bottles 🤣
You are so HUMBLE and that what differentiate you from other's and your lovely wife too..Do more Brother...Thank you always for your work.
I like to wear shorts when I can.I am only able to use them a couple months out of the year.I do alot of walking and I like to be comfortable. However as a member of the fashion police I must tell you that it is an offence to wear the shorts with a long sleeve shirt.
I wear shorts all the time during the summer in Japan and I have never noticed the people looking at me. But I do have noticed that I have never seen an adult wearing shorts. So I asked my Japanese girlfriend, and she told me that it is usually kids who are wearing shorts. But I should not care because I’m a foreigner.
Ha! I was told the exact same thing! Not fair. Women and skirts, I say shorts 🩳 means equality!
@@onlyinjapanGO Agree!
I see folks dress up, get dolled up in Tokyo. It’s nice but I’ll wear whatever is comfortable, even athleisure.
My husband is Japanese and has an unhealthy love of cargo shorts 😂 I call them his “grandpa pants”.
ETA: He’s Okinawan but lived in Tokyo for 7 years, not sure if that makes a difference.
But not in the winter 😂
In Osaka, there are girls who wear shorts, and I mean the micro shorts.
You would not want to get bad eyesight. Just get the frames with normal lenses
I’ve wanted to know if it’s ok to wear dress boots to a business meeting?

How do they feel about a gothic lifestyle
Is still mandatory the use of masks in public spaces for everybody in Japan or only in Tokyo?
Masks have never been mandatory in Japan. The Japanese government can only suggest their use and that is usually enough. Businesses still have mask rules.
John wears shorts in Ginza. True legend. 😎
People think it's the worst when you stick out a bit more. I strongly disagree. It doesn't mean your are rude or something bad. But also you are in Japan where most people are Japanese and you already stick out by having a different skincolor, hair color, body size, face, etc. People are way too scares too stick out. Maybe the other people just think you are cool the way you are.
Kevin riley wear every season shorts^^
I wear shorts all the time here in Australia you might as well go make if people get discussed with people wearing short in Japan

Just ignore, if the comments still go on, tell them the Japanese cherish there privacy and minding others privacy is greatly appreciated.

Japanese appear more cultured and stylish that westerners.
Sort like they are in a fashion show.
Japanese just dress well, a sign of maturity.
I have a disdain for PJ wearers in public probably because it got my brain into thinking did i just walked into 7eleven or someones house?
Check out TabiEats...They wear shorts a lot on their travel videos.
My first time in Japan.. I dressed like an American.. very casual and was called out several times by several women.. I started to dress it up a bit more and the complaints stopped.

@@missplainjane3905 I've stay for extended visits...
@@missplainjane3905 1.I consider both pretty advanced and developed countries.
2. I think both places are an "8" when it comes to culture to technology, architecture, food, local products, scenery/landscape, standard of living/quality of life, etc.. Politically both countries leave something to be desired.
3.Japanese and Korean people i think are quite different... Japanese are somewhat introverted and quiet. while i think korea just the opposite.
4. 3 sort of echos my feeling of question 4.
@@missplainjane3905 5 days is a pretty good start. I do suggest not rushing and take your time when visiting. Remember the big cities are lovely but getting out in the countryside will yield some fantastic and amazing memories.
@@missplainjane3905 Actually i am not too familiar with the pop culture of either places- only what i see on the streets and maybe what i see on the Tv. I mean we all know that Manga and Anime are quite popular in both places. i would say that i am no more familiar than any other Gaijin.
Kanai: Uhmmmm. It is your style but, I feel you looked cold.
Translator: It’s strange, nobody else wears that normally, especially since it is so cold, but you can wear what you want, nobody will stop you.
Kind translator: It’s unique and your uniqueness is attractive, besides you are developing stamina in the cold.
I’m visiting Japan next month, i like to drive car in that Gate Tower Building 😄

I always wear jeans, but shorts are great
Please do a segment on beachwear.
With your hat you would look like a professor if you wore glasses. That would be a cool look as an alternative. You can just get the ones for looks with just glass lenses no prescription like some Koreans like to do. 😁👍
I am all for women wearing short shorts.
You should see how people dress walking through Kabuki Cho at night.😁
