    I am inclined to go with your theory that they added “Impact” to the English title just because it sounds like a cool action game title.

    • @beechan2958
      @beechan2958 3 года назад +218

      Well, since the original title would be proto-god impact, most of the story talks about the impact that the archon war, (the war of the gods), left on the world of tyvet. So technically the title is the sub plot of the story.

  • @LongXue
    @LongXue 3 года назад +206

    Here's my theory about it. Genshin when I researched about it is roughly translating to "Primordial Gods" or ancient gods (just like the gods of celestia before the archon war). Just like what you speculated, in Honkai there's a catastrophic event that happens whenever Humanity's technologies reach a certain degree which will led to a Honkai Impact that will destroy this 'humanity's technology' and never to get back up from it. On the other hand, I believe that Genshin Impact means "The descent of the gods" or the "The impact that brought by the gods" just like what you said. If you remember correctly, 500 years ago is when something like this happened in Teyvat, the kingdom of Khaenri'ah (where Kaeya and Dainesleif(?) came from) is said to have the power and technology to go against the gods at that time, and 500 years ago too is the time when we met the unknown god at the start because we saw in onoe of the trailer what happened to Lumine after being sent to Teyvat. She saw destruction everywhere even in spiral abyss (prob the once territory of the khaenri'ah, after all there's also the theory that the abyss order are once people of the said lost kingdom that got turned into "dregs" just like what Dainsleif said while the rest are chosen "him and kaeya, prob others too) Back to the topic, 500 years ago is when the lost kingdom destroyed, also the time we met the unknown god and separated from our sister which is also the time the unknown god appeared and said "the arrogance of mankind must end now" or something along those lines, prob referring to the khaenri'ah's "dream yet to be dreamed" of taking over celestia and become gods themselves, which when the unknown god is sent out to 'descent' to teyvat and destroy humanity we coincidentally met them while travelling, hence the the first encounter in our 'journe'.
    Long story short, Genshin Impact might be referring to the catastrophe when the gods descended to Teyvat to destroy humanity that has the potential to go against the said gods. Anyways, nice vid!

    • @LongXue
      @LongXue 3 года назад +8

      @@nautuangpu you meant Venti and Zhongli's? But from what I speculated, Venti is forced to give his Gnosis to Signor because he can't fight back at that time for his power might affect the mortals living in mondstadt, on the other hand Zhongli might also be on the side of the Tsaritsa secretly (if you don't know the Tsaritsa might not be our enemy, because in the trailer she is said to be a rebel to the divine unlike the Hydro Archon who is afraid out of the divine). Zhongli might be quite angry to the ancient gods because if not for the archon war that they initiated, Guizhong his former 'friend' might not die or got corrupted during the war, and for him to be forced to watch his 'friend' turned into dust and nothingness in front of him. He might not be going against the ancient gods upfront, but he can help the Tsaritsa in some ways, hence the secret bargaining chip the Tsaritsa gave in exchange of his Gnosis in the last contract. This is just like 2 birds in one stone for Zhongli, one he can get his revenge, two he can have an excuse to become a mortal and abandoned his power so that he can understand the mortals and finally opened the Memory of Dust which Guizhong left to him... In the end, giving the Gnosis to the Tsaritsa might be the best way to defeat the ancient/unknown gods as to their knowledge.

    • @nautuangpu
      @nautuangpu 3 года назад +2

    • @LongXue
      @LongXue 3 года назад +2

      @@nautuangpu wait, you mean whose taking the Gnosis? if it's the Unknown Goddess then I don't have any information of her gathering the Gnosis, when in fact every gods have Gnosis inside them, on the other hand if you're talking about the Tsaritsa, then the gathering of Gnosis is understandable, but the 'descent' on her part isn't really a thing, because all the Archons are in Teyvat and not in Celestia. So there's no point in descending when you are already in the continent itself.

    Fun fact, Honkai Impact's name is actually "Honkai 3rd".
    And yes, the whole reason that japanese pronounciation is pretty obvious, just see how many VAs can't pronounce Liyue names, and you would understand. Japanese pronounciation can be transcripted into romanji, which is latin based (some what) while Chinese transcripts into pinyin which is much further from latin, making it harder to speak for English speakers.

    1. MHY are weebs
    2. Western audiences are more familiar with Japanese media compared to Chinese
    3. Sidestepping anti-Chinese connotations. Ties in with 2, as many uninformed consumers would see the game and just assume it's Japanese. Hell, even now there are people that are ignorant enough to not really understand there's a difference between the 2 cultures and would probably just lump all of East Asia together. I suppose they probably wouldn't play a game like this though.

    Correction about the words honkai and impact in HI3, this might help understanding "genshin impact" meaning
    TLDR:
    Honkai : natural force that want our death
    Honkai Impact : Hersherr apparition with the Honkai doing a huge mess and a lot of death
    Herrschers and Archons are somewhat similar, both are godlike beings
    The honkai is a force inherent to our world that "wants" to destroy humanity, it grows stronger as our technology evolve.
    To destroy us, the honkai has created multiple natural catastropies and plagues during the history of the world. It can also create honkai beast and Herrschers, deadly beings with powers that transcends physical laws. A Honkai Impact corresponds to the apparition of one of those, accompanied with a lot of honkai beast and very high levels of honkai energy (that can transform humans into honkai beast and honkai zombies), the impacts makes a lot of death, wiping out a city or usually way more than that. As you know the game is titled Honkai Impact 3rd, third because the story of the game starts just after the 3rd impact.
    To summarize : read the TLDR.
    Maybe it helps understanding those terms better. I doubt the word impact means something similar in genshin but knowing miHoYo... this wouldn't be surprising at all. But what I'm certain of : genshin impact is a mihoyo game, prepare yourselves to suffer, the game's story just began
    If your interested enough you can watch "Introducing the Honkai-verse" from honkai impact 3rd official channel, its more detailed than i am and i also know it's more accurate since I'm writing what i remember and i may not have a good memory
    (Sorry if my english is bad, hope it's not, its not my native language)

    I actually think the “Impact” in their games is a commemoration for Neon Genesis Evangelion’s “Third Impact” or so. The Mihoyo founders themselves confirmed in an interview with Apple that the whole thing that inspired them into entering gaming industry is NGE itself as they are massive Evangelion fans, and being young men highly interested in anime and driven by their favorite mecha show, they followed their dream. I remember Apple featuring the said interview in the App Store when Genshin Impact became popular.
    Kiana, the first character they made, is the protagonist of the first game they made named “FlyMe2TheMoon”. It is obviously based on, again, Neon Genesis Evangelion.

    Genshin is easier for international audience to pronounce, or at least pronounce somewhat accurately compare to YuanShen(原神)...
    Which if you think about it, Huawei actually did similar naming for their SoC, the Kirin(麒麟) Processor, the actual Chinese pronounciation should be QiLin(麒麟).
    Kirin would be the Japanese pronounciation of the word... since Huawei isn't really related to anime or specifically have special relation with Japan, it could be that they just want the international name been easier to pronounce, since again, Kirin is easier to pronounce accurately compare to QiLin.
    But in terms of Mihoyo, it could be that they just wanna use the Japanese pronounciation since the company is heavily influenced by the Japanese animations.

    In the case of honkai impact, the plot is directly influanced by Neon Genesis Evangelion, particularly where recurring events of mass alien invasions trying to destroy humanity are reffered to as 1st, 2nd and 3rd impact. In just the same way, in honkai impact 3rd, the plot is about the event of alien forces "honkai" ariseing anew and setting out to destroy all civilization, hence honkai impact.

    From my experience in the game, people with Visions are called Genshin, Primordial Gods
    If you connect the words you can get "The Impact of Primordial Gods"

    It's just my interpretation tho

  • @kantoscad3583
    @kantoscad3583 3 года назад

    About Honkai Impact 3:
    The impact in the name (as well as the 3) is born as a Evangelion reference and it's 3rd impact, in the last update HI3 got a collab with eva, a longlife Mihoyo's dream, and Dawei (Mihoyo's CEO) kind of confirmed that in a interview you can find in HI3 official youtube channel. Then they tied the name to the catastrophic events you mentioned, the honkai impacts.
    While the lore is much more wide and revolves around every form of honkai, the plot of Honkai Impact 3 hugely develops around the (guess what?) 3rd honkai impact.
    About genshin impact I don't know anything more than you but like the other fans of both impacts games I'm only waiting for shit to happens. In HI3 the impact only seems a random word in the title but the honkai impacts actually are catastrophic events shaping the history of the world.
    I have two feelings about the impact in genshin impact:
    1 - it has yet to happen and when it will, shit will hit the fan;
    2 - it's what happened when Lumine had her journey in Teyvat, 500 years before Aether.
    And nothing excludes the possibility of both happening at the same time, so each twin will have experimented it's very own genshin impact.
    The part about the genshin -original god-, for what I know right now, can only make me think about the nameless god we met at the beginning (and others like her?) and exclude the archons, only venered like gods.

    About the Impact title in the Genshin/Honkai, there could be a unlikely, but nevertheless plausible explaination:
    Neon Genesis Evangelion
    It is related to the video's second explanations for it, catastrophic events. Now then, forgive me if I have made mistakes, as I never fully experienced Evangelion anime. But from what I can gather from online sources, the "Impacts" in Evangelion anime are all impactful or significant events with catastrophic consequences. One thing Evangelion is known for is its biblical characteristic. As both Honkai and Genshin have biblically influenced plots as well, it could be perhaps Mihoyo founders simply want to have a throwback to one of Japan's most influential monument in their anime industry?

  • @limingxu8648
    @limingxu8648 3 года назад

    A bit late but here's probably the most accurate explanation to the "impact" part of the name:
    Why is "impact" used in genshin? because they what to use their brand as the company that made Honkai.
    But then why is it in Honkai? Because Honkai is largely inspired by Evangelion. They actually had an EVA event just a while back. "Honkai", meaning "the collapse", is a catastrophe in the game, a reference to the "impact" in EVA. To help the western audience make sense of the word "Honkai" they added the impact part. So the name should really be "Honkai (impact)".
    The impact part is missing from the Chinese and Japanese name because naturally it is not needed.

    Just gonna add real quick that they likely went with the Japanese pronunciation and not the Chinese due to the fact that the studio is full of weebs. One look at their official name art, which btw you had up near the start of the video, and you'll see under the name, "miHoYo" you can see it says, "Tech Otakus Save The World".
    So the answer is just that simple, they just love Japanese culture despite being a Chinese studio. Hence why Honkai and Genshin not only both use the Japanese Kanji pronunciation but also why both games mimic the Japanese Anime art style. Its definitely no coincidence.

  • @WhiteTorn
    @WhiteTorn 3 года назад

    I know you're more familiar with Japanese, but I think you should make it more clear that the name "Genshin" is taken from the Japanese "pronunciation", not the Japanese language. 原神 is from the Chinese language, not Japanese. The only reason they used "Genshin" for English is purely for marketing purposes because you can't expect Westerners to pronounce "Yuan Shen". That'll be the same as all English voice actors being unable to pronounce "Liyue". Also, appeal-wise, "Yuan Shen" is less appealing than "Genshin". I know you explain it is not "necessarily" Japanese but a combination of Kanji, but you still make it sounds like it's a word that exists in Japanese and not Chinese by calling it kanji since only Japanese Chinese characters are called Kanji. Chinese words are just called Chinese characters. While kanji is taken from Chinese characters, many of the kanji's meaning has changed and are used differently than they are in Chinese. While in Japanese 原神 is the combination of words, 原神 is not a combination of words in Chinese, but an actual word.
