This is much more my preferred time period of music and genre. Do more please. Obscura is a band I still need to do a deep dive. So thanks for this! 🤘

Always love the extreme metal content on the channel. Never heard the first album, but I own the rest. Incredibly recorded, great bass lines and the guitar leads are unworldly. My ranking as follows
    1 Cosmogenesis 2009
    2 Omnivium 2011
    3 A Valediction 2021
    4 Diluvium 2018
    5 Akroasis 2016

Great knowledge from Ben, and Pete as always. I know it's a smaller audience for this Extreme Metal stuff on this channel but it's always appreciated when it can be fitted in.
I remember being impressed by that last show Ben was on - an overview covering Technically/Progressive Death Metal bands. Looking forward to seeing more!
Maybe we can convert a few people along the way too, if they're open minded! I remember my instant reaction to music like this being overwhelmed - but with a bit of time, it rewards the patience if you're willing to give it time beyond the difficult first impression.

Extreme metal is a niche genre, especially on this channel but once you get past harsh vocals, there's a lot of talented bands to be found. Obscura has been one of my favorites in technical/prog death metal and they've got such a consistent discography. Here would be my ranking:
    6. Retribution
    5. Diluvium
    4. Akroasis
    3. A Valediction
    2. Cosmogenesis
    1. Omnivium

I only have "Cosmogenesis", "Omnivium" and "Akróasis" in my collection. They’re all great, but "Omnivium" is by far my favorite. I just love that album!

I only know Akroasis so looking forward to diving in more. I have heard Stefan discuss in an interview how he also really focuses on high quality production and sound for the Obscura albums, which definitely shows. Also want to recommend Alkaloid with their album Liquid Anatomy. The lineup includes Hannes Grossmann, Linus Klausenitzer, and Christian Munzner.
And maybe prog/tech metal with Ben can be a new official (or unofficial) monthly show.

Saw Obscura (with Persefone and Disillusion also on the bill) a couple of months ago - tremendously technical, and should appeal to a wider audience who shouldn't be put off by the "death" tag.

Excellent choice for a ranking guys! Also so happy to see Benjamin here who is a reservoir of knowledge related to all things metal and a really lovely guy to chat with. Obscura is a band that I have followed right from the debut. They are a band that has some bonafide landmarks for the tech death metal subgenre. A band that I love but can also get frustrated with sometimes as I have felt that their potential hasn't been realised on some of the albums but overall they are a fantastic and promising group
My ranking (my top 2 are absolutely stellar. The third is good and the rest are alright but a bit disappointing)
    Cosmogenesis
    A valediction
    Omnivium
    Akroasis
    Diluvium
    Retribution

    My ranking:

    2. Akroasis
    3. Omnivium
    4. Cosmogenesis
    5. A Valediction
    6. Retribution

It was only after someone had "A Valediction" on their Best of 2021 list that I decided I needed to listen to some technical death metal. It's not an easy genre to get into at first but this band is a good yardstick for what this genre has to offer the music fan.

Great show, i have 3 of their albums and finally started playing them. In fact brought A Valediction 11 months ago and finally played it tonight, it's excellent. The review of their albums, means over the week will revisit the albums I have and start picking up the remaining ones. Also starting picking up on Thulcandra.
