The quick bet and the story not making sense, I’ve heard before.
One hand that still bothers me is I was in hand with a guy at a 1/3 starting with about $900 effective. He raised and I called with QQ. Flop was 2 clubs all below Q. He bet, I called. Turn was a blank and he bets around $100 and I check raise to around $300. He calls. River was a king which completed the flush, was a over card to my pair, and I think also brought in a straight, even though I blocked the straight. Almost as soon as the king hit the felt he announced all in. I tanked and remember thinking that the snap all in is usually a tell, but I couldn’t pull the trigger and folded.

I think it generally means they are nervous, could be because they have no idea how bluffing works or they have no idea how to make value or protect their good hand, so they try to conceal it; or the exact opposite, they get a hard-on over supposedly being fooling the whole table and it's some actual smuggy over-confidence, but then they also won't be the ones with the monster when reaching for the chips with a shaking hand. For the bigmouthing type, a shaking hand probably just means he got a bad batch of coke, because when he is dealt AA it's due to the merit of his play (as opposed to being dealt too many bricks, which is the dealer's fault.)

I’ve run into situations like the paired board raise many times, and I’m here to tell you, often, even the WORST of players do have it. Remember well a board exactly like the one you showed. 8/8/4. Bb called my oversized button raise. I had queens. Bb called with A/8 and actually check raised on the flop with trip 8’s. Me, thinking there was no way anyone was dumb enough to make a play like that, got stacked and taught a valuable lesson. Yes, sometimes the bad players are incredibly bad and DO actually have it.

Yep, one size fits all doesn't work in poker. Played with a loose drunk last week and flopped a flush with 78 suited. Someone bet $30 and I just called because you can't get people off draws anyway at 1/3 in this room. Drunk makes it $75 and it's folded to me. I shove thinking he's making a play with a big diamond. He calls his $250 with king high flush. Even drinkers or donators vary their play occasionally

Excellent! A couple/ few of these I have overlooked. Thank You Nathan!!!
I play primarily low stakes, 1/2, 2/5 with typical 10.00 straddles. Have learned to be patient for opportunities and watch closely for bluffs. Most of the time these recs are on a draw that when the board doesn't connect they'll try to bluff with large bet sizes. So three betting, four betting using your cheat sheet, just to see if they actually have it, has been working a lot more for me. Paying for info, right? When stories don't add up and they know most will fold if they put a pot sized river bet out there, or shove. One of my biggest adjustments was NOT being scared off by this play. I'd like to add that only occasionally, 20% of the time I am wrong.
The math anomalies are irritating, but it's like you said, part of the game you just have to suck up and not take it personally, or chastise a fish for poor play. We don't want to chase them off either! 😂
    Anyway, thanks again!

That's why you have to mix it up. Stare, don't stare. Smile, don't smile. Swallow large, don't swallow at all. Breathe normally, or heavy. Bet big, bet small, Sometimes fold if the pot is crap. let them take their little victories. There are just so many dynamics at a table. Especially if there are seasoned players.

Hi Nathan - question about #4 - why doesn’t the villain have a K or Q In their range? Seems like he could have lots of Kx suited, even Qx suited and some T9 too. Am I wrong?

    • @paul969
      @paul969 Год назад +1

I think the point was most players will check back flop with Kx and Qx.
But you’re right that we can’t just say those cards are not in their range. There are still discounted combos of KJ and QJ out there, but not enough to make this a fold.
Kx and Qx should really only be the suited diamond version and would likely check back river, so his river bet should contain more bluffs than value

    • @rwfoxtrot
      @rwfoxtrot 11 месяцев назад

It might be because Nathan described the player as a LAG so it’s more likely he/she would’ve reraised from the button with any pair 88+ (and perhaps even smaller!) or 2 broad way cards like AK-T, KQ-T, QJ-T or JT. After that particular flop, (Js,7d,5d) what would they continue with by betting rather than just checking back? Chances of hitting a K or Q are roughly 12% for both turn and river and less for a A or J because the hero has card removal. Chasing a straight with connectors or flush with a suited A is more likely the reason to continue. When the Turn and River drop Ks and Qc respectively, really the only hand that would make sense is T9 diamonds and that is about it. Remember that the hero RAISED preflop from an earlier position so that K and Q are scare cards for the villain as well. I admit that 77 or 55 also makes sense but the odds of that are 10% so it’s more likely they didn’t hit a set on the flop. By the way, I can never process this in real time at the tables since I don’t get to play often enough!! 😊

I do not understand #4 - and admittedly I have problems evaluating possible ranges. But in #4 you specifically say the opponent can have broadway hands. Yes the turn and river comes k and q and you say he cannot have those cards. Why? I can see him having K 10 suited. K J. Q 10 and calling preflop as he did. So why can't he have a k or q - and especially since you said broadway cards are in his range. TKS

Went to play 1/3 no limit yesterday. New table, $300 max buy. I hadn't even paid 2 blinds and got AQs. Flop was garbage, I was on the button and bet 5bb. Called all around. Turn comes A. Get called again. River comes garbage. He checks, I bet $50 and he raises me all in. He check/called me every street and goes all in. He played every hand before that too. (All 6)
Easy call. Doubled up and left. They weren't happy with me.
    Was it a dick move?

I saw this video just before I played yesterday in a day 2 of a tournament. I just saw the first example then left for the tourney and it back fired for me. After playing for 4 hours and the best hands I had was 1 pair a few times. I had to steal a lot just to keep my stack would not get to low. I got caught a few times and I think I was playing very good considering the dead cards I was being dealt. 10 handed first to act I have pocket Aces. Blinds were 8k 8k/4K I raise to 18K everyone folds except the SB and the BB they call. Flop 8d,8s,2h - SB checks, BB checks I bet out 35K. SB re-raises to 85K (I then think about this video) I call. Turn Jack h, SB bets 45K I call then the River was 3s. SB bets 55K I call and I lose most of my stack - he had 9,8 off-suit.

It would be nice to see a video on how important it is to only be one level above your opponent. A quick example, you point out # 7) Acting too quickly.
I can't tell you how many times I've tried to reverse this by instantly shoving quads and FHs, etc. and it never works. If level 1 is just looking at your cards and level 2 is realizing that acting too quickly is fishy then level 3 is acting too quickly on purpose. It will work against level 2 and always fail against level 1. They're just thinking "oh wow must be a strong hand"

Revisiting this one after discovering I’d been blown off some good hands recently on Ignition by ridiculous bluffs. #9 and #7 ring particularly true, and as always, the fish on tilt.
I’d add another form of “bluff” that these players use is overvaluing or raising flop/turn with a weak top pair. Learning that I just need to call down (situationally dependent) with some strong top pairs, even when the pot gets bloated.

Can't even make it past hand 1. I've been in this exact situation before and got check raised only to find out my opponent had KK. I had 66 on a 445 board. In my experience in low stakes poker you should always be weary of the check raise. It seems like the majority of the time you get check raised your opponent has a hand you don't really expect (usually pretty strong.) And they check to induce you to bet so that way you're more likely to call a raise. It's easier to get you to call a bet after you've already put money in the middle.

Assessing the strength of the rec you're up against is crucial here. Far too generalized suggestions in this list, even though the effort is there and there are certainly bad regs that play this way.
(eg what doesn't make sense about a Jxhh hand continuing to barrel a board to the end, or hands like KQhh, KJhh or Kxhh that c-bet their semi-bluff and decide to be aggressive with their improved perceived equity as opposed to obtaining showdown value? Barrel-barrel-shove could mean nothing, or it could be 2pr or a set.
One thing that does happen quite a bit with more dangerous rec and reg players is flatting with a big pair. A raise on a paired board certainly could mean "you don't have an eight" and it also could mean "you don't have an eight, and I have you crushed". There are a host of good pros and regs that will attack a c-bet into a paired board with great success in the game right now.

I love watching your content, however this one is quite confusing for me. I consider my self a recreational player, simply because of the fact that I do not play full time, sometimes, because of the nature of my job, I don't play for 6 months. Number 9 I don't find to be correct. I had few situations like that where I was a BB, just called a raise with small pair and flop would come something like K,K,8 and I had 8,8. After my check, button would bet and I would always raise. Logic behind my thinking is that if he had K,which he did, with 3, would put me in a tough situation later on, no matter which card came, because he could represent it. Anyway the guy folded on my 3-bet and showed his cards. It happened to me more than once, so I'm not really sure about this one.

On #4 example your explanation of QK not being in their range has me puzzled? I don't understand how a Queen or King would not be a common range for your opponent? There are many times a player will float with overs to the flop. I don't really see how you could feel there bluffing with 2 overs to your Jack. Im not saying i would not call there river bet but i would not be confident that they are bluffing having either a K or Q.

Saw a hand last week at a casino in Serbia.
Everybody folds, SB raises 4BB, BB calls.
    Flop 34T, rainbow.
SB bets half pot, BB calls
Turn K, the board is a total rainbow, no flush.
    Check-check
    River 5.
SB check, BB bets a bit more than half the pot.
Now, the pot is around 5000 dinars (25bb)
SB shoves for 55k dinars. 11 times the pot. BB tanks for eternity and calls with 35suited, SB tables 67.
It's a story about the bets that are too big for a normal game. BB didn't trust and paid like 40k Serbian dinars for it.
If somebody's interested, 1 USD is about 110 dinars, but 40k is enough for a grown man to buy food for a month.

Number 4 doesn’t seem right to me. The LAG OTB flats your open raise. That is a wide capped range but it would have to includes a lot of Ax and suited Kx Qx Jx hands. If you check the turn overcard and flat their bet, you are making crying check call, and again on the river overcard IMHO. How does their betting behaviour confirm that they are just bluffing? Unless this is just the classic “LAG’s like to bet scare cards” bluff?
