It happened to the Sun Belt before when Georgia Southern won 9 games each of their first two years and App State went 11-2 their second season in the FBS. JMU's early success isn't unprecedented and the NCAA loves their rules.

The fact that they are playing a team that did wait out the 2 year rule (App State) and they think they are the exception to the rule. At the end of the season change the rule for the future. You don't make a mid season rule change to make some garbage school happy.
My understanding is no matter how much bowls don't have 6-6 or better teams, JMU still won't get a bowl. They will go to the 5-7 teams and pick them. I can understand not allowing teams to play down and immediately qualify but playing up and not qualifying, that makes less than no sense, especially in a bowl situation
CBS' article on the situation said JMU can make a bowl game if less than 82 teams have 6 wins, I don't thing they can play in the cfb playoffs though. There are only 58/82 teams eligible so far.@@billw5823

They aren't outright banned from bowl games. It seems to work in a tiered priority system. Tier 1 teams are teams with .500 or better, they will get bowl games first. Tier 2 being everyone else. So JMU isn't eligible for tier 1 but is clearly the leader in tier 2. JMU is also not allowed to play in their conference championship even though they should have been in it last year and this year. I completely agree that these are stupid rules that need changed.@@Rowsy91

The bottom line is the rule needs to modified asap and the current rule needs to be applied correctly. When a waiver is filed the NCAA should have to at minimum provide a reason applicable to the applicant university why it was rejected. Also, the amount of national attention JMU is getting over this far exceeds any from Bowl games that SBC teams usually are involved in.

The NCAA is in a changing landscape NIL and Bowl games are based on good traveling teams not involved in the Championship games. Probably scared half the stadium will be empty with James Madison fans.
Doesnt matter, though. That's a problem they would need to solve once it happened.

The bottom line is the rule needs to modified asap and the current rule needs to be applied correctly. When a waiver is filed the NCAA should have to at minimum provide a reason applicable to the applicant university why it was rejected. Also, the amount of national attention JMU is getting over this far exceeds any from Bowl games that SBC teams usually are involved in.
Not only did Reggie lose his heisman, USC lost a National title from the record books during a 33 game win streak. Pete Carroll? Bailed to Seattle for a Super Bowl with NO repercussions. SC also was handed scholarship sanctions and bowl sanctions that have made the University completely different than during those dynasty years. The NCAA should go away and the people involved should be Pat’s interns. ✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼
