Yep after my dad ran 090’s falling large diameter river red gums in australia for over a decade he said as soon as the 066 came out that was it he ran them ever since and they were the main work saw for everything for him and his boys. 30 years of logging and never changed after that. Says a lot about the saw ay.

So true. I tried all the other's but only the 660 magnum rips through gum tree's like a beast. It's heavy but it's the only saw with the grunt to handle the bark and resin without choking up the bar or running out of steam. I would not waste my money on anything else.

I agree about the 066 mag! Very loyal saw! Back when our oak averaged 30-40 inches dbh this is what I ran! That and the husky 2100! Both had that tree killing 40 mm stroke!

I take either a 064, 066, or MS660 everyday to the woods. When the new saws crap out they finish the job. 32 years on my first 064 and still going strong. My local Stihl dealer still does complete rebuilds on the older models. It is great that you still do them as well Donny, these old saws are worth being rebuilt for sure.

Hey Mr Walker...hope your doing well. Just found this video and it's funny you've talked about the longevity and reliability of the 660....I actually have one I bought brand new about6 years ago and it came with a full wrap bar. Hopefullymine is includedin the 660 list...I've only cut about 10 to 20 cords with it because I have two 372xp's, and a 440 magnum I bought in 04....like you said as long as it's a good saw...and the huskys are that. The 440 is the one I'd like to make mention of...I usually cut anywhere from 10 to 20 cords per year and the 440 magnum has been my predominant saw from 04 to about 2020 when I picked up the first husky. That 440 has cut many many cords of wood and has never been into a shop for anything...its been the most reliable saw that I've owned so far. I will say that I give some of the credit to the oil I run in the gas, but it'd been an amazing saw. I'm 60 and live in eastern oregon...I wish your shop was closer....well I just thought I'd mention this and keep up with these videos...ive learned a ton from buckin's videos and am looking forward to watching yours.
Take care and happy new year
    Ray Scott

Thank you for addressing the handle angle on husky. I absolutely love the 372, but that dang angle smokes my wrist... So I became a Jonsered 2071/2171 guy. Plus, that lowback is just beautiful.
RIP Jonsered. Such a sad fate for such an influential manufacturer.
Anyways, you are correct, the 066/660 is phenomenal!! Heavy, overbuilt, but dependable and great predictable power. Nothing against the 394/395, which is a purebred... But the 066 is a true workhorse.

Funny, even though I'm a Husqvarna fan I agree it's one of the best if not the best ever for sure. Two things come to mind. BECAUSE it has such a good design, even the clones work and survive based on that design. Think about that for a second. And it's life span in the market place surpassed the 372 with the ms660. ( 372 X-torq is a completely different design than a 371/2 OE ) Only reason I may put the 371/2 ahead is they really pushed the power to weight along with rubber boot , antivibration, and quad port :) BUT A "Holy Grail" saw for me is a clean 066 at some point in my life. :)

Great video Donny. Question. One of my 660 crank on the clutch side gets hot with the clutch removed. I vacuum tested the crank case and it held well. Do you think my bearings need replacing? They feel ok, but it definitely gets warm. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated 👍🏼

The reason the 261 craps out is because they are turning 14,500+ with no way to limit them. I bought one and after break in I checked it with my tach. It scared me to death, so I dumped it. Let some other idiot smoke it - not me. 12,600-12,800 is my top rpm limit. I checked the 024 that I restored and it is running at just a little over 11,000 which is fine with me. It has a nice little four stroke on it. Why push a 40 year old saw to its limit?
