  • @bustersgotavmax

It's a throw away item. Honestly, right at the start when it was stated that it was fake leather, it was a no go. In this case Amazon shouldn't be making any statements about quality under the Amazon Essentials branding. Not having any country of origin markings is a sad testimonial here. Makes you wonder if Amazon did much if any product research and testing during the acquisition process.

The boot is exactly what I expected...Couple of things: First, Amazon does not take just a "few dollars" from products being sold. If FBA, they take about a 1/3rd. Second, I don't respect the fact that they compete against their customers on their own platform. Their algorithms identify the markets they want to be in, they undercut all competition with their buying power, and have destroyed many a private labels.

I make it a policy to never buy anything from Amazon. If I have something I want that's, for some bullshit reason, Amazon exclusive. I don't need it. I can wait for ebay or find an equivalent or just not buy it. Don't buy from these corporations, you're effectively voting them into power by doing so. If you can afford it always buy local, if you can't you probably didn't need it. You can live with a lot less than you have right now and you can take a lot more control of your life.

I think its middle class Americans who have given them this market share. Boots are the quintessential example of "it's expensive to be poor", since $150 boots lasting 10 years are a better investment than $50 ones that last 2 years. I would guess a majority of amazon basics/essentials shoppers are people like me who have a salary, weren't taught how to tell if a product is going to last, who can afford to replace them every few years, and are convinced to buy something by HQ photos, the right buzz words, and some 4-5 star anonymous reviews. I imagine working class people try their shoes on before buying. I am the problem.

They also benefit from the novice/virgin shopper. We have all bought cheap and later regretted it. So it stands to reason that some businesses have a big supply of coming of age consumers who learn the hard way and buy from them once. I was a novice (music) festival goer in my late 30s (!), and remember being ripped off by a pizza seller - $25 for a small takeaway (vegetarian) pizza consisting of a smear of tomato sauce and a sprinkle of cheese “sorry mate we have run out of rocket”. I was so naive / shocked I just accepted it.

To be fair, every store has a store brand. There are reasons you should want to limit giving Amazon money but having a store brand is not one of those.

In several cases I've heard of, Amazon simply copies a product sold on their site and pushes out the original producer.

Why DO they add the shank if it does nothing? Surely not just for youtubers that make boot videos? Why not make more money by removing it??

13:25 Sir, that is a Pokemon stats chart, usually used for HP, Attack, Defense, Speed, Sp. Def, and Sp. Atc.
So I guess in this case, just "stats chart" would do.

Enjoyed the review. Didn't notice if the boots had any sort of label indicating material. Typically it has symbols indicating real leather for outer, lining, and sole. I notice a lot of bonded leather, which is like leather particle board, and really cheap and crappy pig skin, which they will then coat the hell out of kind of like old patent leather, to try and hide the fact that it is in fact cheap and crappy pig skin. Really surprised that there was no country of origin. And yes, I agree, can find far better used if you take some time to look. Sadly, even more expensive shoes and boots are no guarantee of quality.

Amazon Publicly: "These are high quality and built to last for a cheaper price!"
Amazon to Shareholders: "These are built to last thirty-five days for a cheaper price, so we can get just past our thirty day return window closing. The lower price entices people to buy them and since they wear out just past the return window we have their money. So many people are into fast-fashion that they expect products to only last for one wear."

It would be interesting to check out the canvas sneakers from "Nothing New". They are made from the same creators of Thursday Boots. They claim to make their sneakers from recycled products. I have a pair, and I find them to be much more comfortable than Chucks.
