Genuine Crepe comes in same thickness sheets, to start it’s a difficult material to work with, then to make a wedge sole it becomes time consuming to shape to the right angle.
The foam is to save time and money
    in manufacturing.

As a Clarks fan that’s been wearing them for the better part of 30 yrs and have well over 75 pairs I can speak on the things you’ve gotten wrong or misunderstood. …
Comparing the two deserts is wrong in the sense the brown pair are a remake of a 100+ yr old design. The name implies what they were made for. The suede version are a remake of the classic design. Something Clarks does with all their shoes. There are like 4-5 currently. I don’t know if you’re playing ball in them for them to chunk up but I’ve never had that issue to the extent you’re referring to. What happens is the crepe tends to collapse where you put your weight on the most something that can be fixed by sticking them in the freezer for a bit. Like with any shoe company that’s been around for eons, the name is everything. No different then Nike or Jordan’s which are made for pennies and sell for ungodly sums, you’re only gonna see quality in bespoke shoes. Clarks does collabs with just about every clothing designer on the planet and uses leather/suede from some reputable companies. Come down to the Caribbean, especially Jamaica where these are worn like sneakers. Mostly with no socks. Hence why reggae artist are the faces of Clarks. At the end of the day Clarks brand is suppose to be unchanged. And while they do update their shoes, they still sell originals (hence the “Clarks Originals” branding)

I buy the Clark’s Originals, men’s size 7, perfect for me, a women’s size 9W. I’ve never had the soles come off. I also wear them without socks. Because of RA, I cannot wear any type of heel or a shoe that has my feet on a downward slant. That rules out my wearing nearly all women’s shoes. Clark’s are moderately priced, whereas the other shoes I find comfortable, Birkenstock and the original, 1970’s Kalso Earth Shoe, create a pain in my pocketbook! None of them are “stylish,” but at age 64, that’s not my concern! If someone doesn’t like it, they needn’t look down!

Bought my first pair of Clark's Desert Boots in 1954, the year I finished high school.
On hot days they were cooler that most any other shoe. Also, bought a pair of the "Blue Suede Shoes" and they were very hot to wear in the Summer.
Then to university in Vancouver where it rains all winter and I wore the Clark's year-round.
Each pair lasted for some 5 years, going through two sets of laces.
    Very good for year-round wear.
Bought my last pair about 35 years ago but have not worn them much because the lighter color seemed not to go with blue jeans anymore.
Bought a pair with the waxed brown leather finish some ten years ago and they have been very comfortable.

I too worked for Clarks and have now started working for RM Williams. Clarks shoes are in no way a premium shoe. They are unable to control their supply chain, different shoes being manufactured and sourced from over 300 suppliers. A clarks shoe will not last a long long time, and they become more uncomfortable as time goes on. So happy I've switched to a company that sells an honest product, RM Williams are fantastic value for money when compared to say a Churches shoes.

I sprayed them with Clarks own suede protector, and the uppers still look really good. I’m English and therefore Clarks Desert Boots are a thing for me! I finally got a pair last year after not really being able to afford them for years, so your vids were a bit disappointing to me! 🤣🤣🤣
I completely agree with the ankles not being tight. Clarks Desert Boots are notorious for running big. I wear an insole in mine (orthotic one, so partly for that reason too) and that solved the problem to a large extent but they are still a bit loose and I am quite slight, so I also have “lady ankles”
Clarks shoes are quite difficult to break in. I have a few pairs and have found this with every one. The desert boots cut my heel to ribbons the first time I wore them but I’ve not had any problems subsequently. My wife has a pair of Clarks trainers and she says they have rubbed too so it must be a thing with their shoes.
I agree too that you pay for the name a bit. My beeswax Desert Boots are a thing of beauty though and I love them! Clarks did used to be considered good quality when I was a kid but, as with most things, I suspect they are not as good as they once were.

I was a Mormon missionary for two years. Those guys punish their footwear. I had one paif of Clark's boots for 2 years walking approx 20km a day. They rocked. I paniced after just 6 weeks as the sole split a little. Clark's gave me a full refund. I cut the edges of the split at 90 degrees to the split and it stopped. I had them re heeled once. But they lasted well. The goretex lining was junk though. And due to the heel slip the back of the heel wore, they made the stupid mistake of just having the jersey material there. I patched it up with duct tape.
The uppers were 100% OK after the two years.
I also got a pair of quality leather flip-flops from them. They lasted me 10 years of casual use. When they broke I got another seriously expensive pair from a brand I can't recall...... The same price, one year later they were toast.

He changes his mind just as soon as he sees how their made and what their made of. The suede is the best suede money can buy and it's pretty thick at 2.2mm. The sole of the shoe inside goes all the way to the end of the boot and doesn't stop in the middle like he pointed out earlier in the video. The crepe isn't just crepe it actually has some dense foam on the inside to keep up the structure of the wedge and give it some longevity since crepe doesn't hold up as well over time. It's a wedge shaped sole and not technically a heel so it doesn't really need a shank for arch support. Quote of the day "I did not expect to see..." True name for the video is "Clark's fixed many of the things I used to hate about them".

Yeah, I have 3 pairs of Originals that get a ton of rotation but after about a a mile of walking the dogs are fatigued. These new wedge styles looks as if they addressed that issue. W/o losing anything that makes Clark’s ver of the desert boot great. I might have to sell my 3 pairs of originals for a pair of the new version.

I agree with you on Clark’s. My biggest peeve is no arch support. Cardinal sin for a shoemaker with such a big name. I haven’t bought Clark’s for that reason despite loving the desert boot chukka style. I’d be keen on checking out your boots but doubt I can afford them. Maybe the next release. Great vid!

I bought a pair of Clark shoes similar to the ones being examined, but at the time they were on sale, and I really didn't need a new pair, so I stored it for 2 years; yep, after one week the soles cracked, and I had to throw them out, such a waste of money.

Have you considered doing a series for traveller's and persons living in foreign countries? What do I mean? The first thing I think of when I view your videos, is this: which countries of the world can I buy quality footwear for a much cheaper price (not knockoffs, I mean the genuine article). In my experience living in S.E. Asia, even though so many shoes and hoots are made in Vietnam, all you can buy in Saigon are fakes. And if you do go to a licensed store the price isn't that much cheaper than in Canada. Likewise, I would love to see a video series on getting custom-made shoes in Italy, Spain, Romania, etc.

Entire generations of School kids grew up wearing Clarks Desert Boots in Australia ... I don't recall any complaints - entering Teen years in the 80's, these were then worn by Gangs of Kids in various Youth Subcultures ... Rude Boys, Mods, Skinheads and Punks ... the Ripple Sole Desert Boots were worn primarily by the Rudes while the Chukka's were preferred by Mods. When they wore out - we just replaced them.

You are really right about the flaws of Clarks, I guess I just realize I hate the crepe soles after buying my only pairs of clarks. However after I change the sole, it was way better. But I guess the bottomline is if you are into the Chukka boot, it will be more worthy to buy some other counterpart that are not called "dessert boots".

And I thought Clarks were for Britain only!
They have always been costly, but what I like about them is that they do half sizes.
Can't think of any other shoe shop that does that.
Wish they would bring back the "Huntsman" model, but chisel the heel so you can't see the wear on it.

I purchased Clarks shoes around 4 years ago. In fact, they appear to be brand new but noticed the sole just came off. I contacted WALK ON A CLOUD where I originally purchased the shoes and was told to contact CLARKS CANADA. I contacted Clarks but they couldn't care less.
    "Good day .......,
Thank you for taking the time to contact us. I'm sorry to learn of your disappointment with your shoes.
If the shoes are deemed defective within 6 months, we will offer a refund or replacement. After this time, we are not able to assist with such queries.
Thank you again for taking the time to contact us. On behalf of Clarks, please accept my apologies for any inconvenience caused.
We here at Clarks wish you a wonderful day.
    Kind regards,

Unfortunately, they do not stand behind their product thus tarnishing a once solid company's reputation.

1 thing i hate about chukkas: "simple design... easy and fast construction"
and those heel slip issues are probably because of how non-tailored these shoes are, they just reek of lazy and unskilled craftsmanship to me and I hate that they are fashionable.

A good aftermarket insole will solve the heel slip problem.
Also try out Clarks boots named "Desert Trek" HI. While at it, Clarks also have an old but reliable shoe called "Nature 2". It has been in circulation for as long as I can recall. My father still has me order him new ones every now and then. My high school principle and teachers from the Brothers of Christian Instruction (De La Mennais Brothers), an old catholic organization originating from Canada, also wore these iconic Clarks brand when they taught us Physics and Chemistry at St. Mary's College Kisubi in Uganda. These shoes have been part of my whole life, and I have basically owned each design I could lay my hands on from ALL stores in Boston, Hartford or New York.

Congrats on the boot! Looks like it’s gonna be pretty cool!
For the chukka series, Truman has a pretty beefy version of a chukka that leans more boot than shoe. It’d be awesome if you could cut that one apart and dissect it.
I know RUclips is a side gig for you and boots can get expensive, but it’d be interesting to get more brands from the GYW space onto the channel (like Truman, oak street, parkhurst, etc.).
