Been thinking about swap but i spent 10k+ on my motor all the goodies with upgraded trans and stall. And happy with runs strong and i drive up to 2hrs to shows and do the woodward dream cruise with non stop driving. Spot on with analysis of everything. Good job bro
I’m in the final stages of doing my Caprice and I thought I spent a lot. One thing I remind myself is I pay for what I want and I want my stuff like factory.
Good video, good info for sure. Man my build was a fraction of that but I put a truck 5.3 and 4l60e into a c10 and reused everything I could. My swap was cheap and then I was able to sell my 350/th350 to recoup the original 700 I spent on the lm6/4l60e. But good deal with what your sharing so folks going the route you did know what they are in for.
@@henrywal Hey Henry, my swap overall was cheap. Like I mentioned, my motor and trans and anything I wanted off the loner truck was 700 total. I learned how to use pcmhammer and turnerpro which got me into the pcm and removed vats for free, as well as do a bunch of little things like set the proper rear end ratio, kill off check engine lights that was for stuff removed like the evap stuff and rear o2 sensors. I bought motor mounts and a trans mount from ebay, as well as headers. Those all were probably under 300 bucks. I bought 2.5 inch exhaust pipe from oreilies for 60 bucks and fab'ed my own dual exhaust. I bought a 20 dollar pcm from the junkyard to practice on tuning with and then sold it for 100 with vats removed. I reused everything and I mean everything. Spark plugs, hoses and belts, fitting from my old trans fit right into the new trans, so no new lines there. Stock radiator worked perfectly as well as the linkage for the shifter to the 4l60 trans. Drive shaft fit perfect too, since I didnt change the location of the engine. Fuel system was the bigger part. New tank, pump, sender and fuel lines was around 300 bucks. So 700 plus 300 plus 300 then add in 400 more for gaskets and fluids. Thats 1700, but then subtract 700 for my old motor and trans I sold, and another 80 for the pcm I sold in profit. So around 1000 total. I drive the crap out of the truck now and use it like a work truck. It honestly got 20.8 mpg on the highway recently. I have the stock 2:73 rear gear and now with the overdrive tans this thing hardly spins rpms at all! Plus at low speeds and out of the hole its a rocket and I can roast that single tire for very long if I want to lol. The old motor and trans no way could do that. Took me two months of working on it everyday to do the swap. I took it on as a series of mini projects. The benefits I have over most people is that I have a heated garage with a lift, I know electronics and electrical well, and I work in IT for the last 20 years. Plus I've restored other cars before. So I could do everything on my own. My welding sucks but I can stick metal together.
I always tell people it all depends on if your doing it and depends on drivetrain being used and price of it along with harness. It can be from 3k on up
@@kischillin5539 it can be done cheaper if you get a deal on your engine like going to the pick an pull scrap yard getting a full drivetrain with harness to reuse still intact pedal computer and all. Then I will say you can drop it in and have running for 2k but depends on drivetrain pricing and how much you want to do as far as a cam, turbo etc
Yeah your numbers are pretty close to mine but I’m running an iron 370” lq9 with 64cc ls3 heads and LSA supercharger on a 1974 nova with 4l65e and 3.42 posi……I was able to save a lot of money cause I did all the work myself and a lot of leftover little parts from other LS swaps I’ve done
Yeah, this is why I entirely avoided anything Holley - the mounts and the xmembers I paid about $400 CAD and had the xmember made by a fabricator. I did an ebay oilpan at about $300 CAD shipped too. This video is awesome by the way, we'll see if my engine explodes or shakes out my engine bay lol. I'm also doing the insane thing of using a 6l90 and a l96. We'll see how it works out. Using factory harness.
Great video…. After the initial cost of the parts to actually bolt the engine into the car… that’s when you get nickel and dimed to bankruptcy 😂 I did the same thing with a 81 Turbo Trans Am. I admit that I built the engine into a 416 ci but was way cheaper then finding a LS3 or LS7 .

Thx for the vid. You opened my eyes on that breakdown of yours. I have a 02' Monte Carlo SS Dale Earnhardt edition and my motor blew a few years back. I'm not a racer. I just want to go with a LS motor so it can pretty much run smooth. I would like to get a couple of recommendations from you. Thx again.
Remember though his swap was done in 2016 some parts he used has gone way up in price and in today's market a 3500 MC is a roller in maybe ok condition
I’m in Dallas, tx and I must say I wanted to LS swap my 86 as. But I very seldom get the chance to work on my own cars. That’s a good price for your MC though, I got mines on trade for bodywork and refinishing the paint. What was the website you mentioned??? I couldn’t really hear what you said
Y'all need to spend some time on the MCSS and LSX forums. I was the FIRST one to swap a LS into a g body using all gm parts and NO CUTTING THE CROSS MEMBER. No modified oil pan, no holley parts. And no the FBody pan is NOT the answer. Btw. I did my swap back in '14.
Personally an old school 350 was never an option for me. I would say budget wise if you don’t want to spend a lot go with the 350. Unless you’re doing it yourself to save on labor.
