I loved Ura's fists up fighting stance! Waka didn't know what to make of it 😂

Wakamotoharu cracked him hard with that forearm blast, I think Ura was trying to tell him this wasn't a striking sport!

"salt throw". There have been some cracking bouts in this Basho. And Ura with his "puddum up" was wonderful.

Ura never fails to deliver on entertainment! I probably enjoy his matches the most, even though I know he’s not winning any Yusho anytime soon.

I think you forgot about Terunofuji's retirement opening another slot for a Juryo wrestler. We should have 4 guaranteed promotions from Juryo. Depending on how things go, we may see some guys with truly awful records being saved at the bottom of Makuuchi.

I did. Also forgot about Kagayaki!

For those commenting on Ura's "put up your dukes" pose, there was a woman in the crowd today with two homemade Ura cheering fans. One had a line drawing of Ura with his fists up and the words, Fighting Ura, in sparkly letters of course.
It has been an interesting basho hasn't it? Kinbozan--who'd a thunk it? I'm kind of rooting for him to win, because I've always liked him and I enjoy a little chaos now and then, and because I think Hosh won't get the rope even if he does win. I would also be thrilled if Kirishima won. (Don't look now, but if he finishes strong he will be on an Ozeki run.) I hope they are generous with the sansho as there are several deserving guys.

I knew Hoshoryu would win the yusho. 3 wins in 1 day. 🤘🤘

I am guessing Hoshoryu will not get the promotion this time around. He has 3 bad losses and looked like he wasn’t ready to compete early on. I’m guessing they will want to wait one more tournament to see if this was just a fluke or if he has a chronic consistency problem.

Honestly my favorite part of the basho was....how in the world does Chiyoshoma have the, idk the word, moxy? To stare down Hosh like that. He lost, but still. He looked almost dismissive of Hosh lol

I'm so glad you are an actor and not math teacher. 3 down - 3 up? Teru retired, so we have for sure one more promotion than demotion!

This tournament is just wild. Great Quick Strike JWags. I’m REALLY hoping Hoshoryu wins out and seals the deal, not because I think the JSA will award him the rope, but because I’d like it for him to make it hard for them to say no. I never know which way they’re leaning…

    Ura's a fightin man, I like it!

Even though there are still much more moving parts than we expected, I feel the quality of sumo overall is going up. And I liked how the tournament defied everyone's predictions in the beginning and then everybody adjusted their expectations going forward only for the tournament to go the other direction again. I mean, what has Shodai been doing, he powerslaps Hoshoryu and now looks... competent?

Oho looking better every basho - a future star for a long, long time! Hoshoryu surely is the next Yokozuna - he deserves it. Have you ever seen a more entertaining rikishi than Ura??
Cracks me up every time. This tourney so awesome with the new young stars rising again - Takerufuji, Hakuoho & Oho. And Kirishima with the goods again. Wassup with Kotozakura - injured??? And Kazakhstan has another star - I thought Elena Rybakina would be the only Kazakh to be threatening to win any silverware this year 🙂Keep up the great work Mr JWags! Prediction - Kirishima, Oho, Hoshoryu & Takerufuji in a 4-way playoff - pleeease!

Juryo was epic. Today was the most anticlimactic “what in the unwashed mawashi?” Day in a while. The ozeki matches were all anticlimactic, same with the Oho and kirishima match and then the shonanoumi and oshoma match was the worst sumo I’ve seen in a while, I will give shonanoumi some props for making an effort to use his size a couple matches this basho.
Takerufuji getting a pretty soft schedule as you said.
There’s a guy on the sumo subreddit who is doing some promotion and demotion speculation daily and it’s pretty insightful.

Video suggestion. Ranking wrestlers on how many winning record they have gotten in the last 3, 6, 9 or 12 bashos in makuuchi. For example Hoshoryu has 19 winning records in a row and his streak started from M6. He has 9 as ozeki, 6 as sekiwake, 3 as komusubi and 1 as maegashira. Onosato most likely is the second best with 7 wining records in a row. 2 as ozeki, 2 as sekiwake, 1 as komusubi and 2 as maegashira.

I keep seeing people say that Mitakeumi could announce his retirement at the end of this tournament based on how he's competing.

Unlikely. He still makes decent money. His stablemaster isn't retiring yet.

In all of your promotion research, would 1-2 playoff wins make a 12-3 looked at as valuable as 13-2 win? This one could be a huge playoff!

    • @TheDohyo
      @TheDohyo  9 дней назад +1

From what I've seen, the fact that it's a playoff win or loss matters less than the record before the playoff. From what I've seen, 13-2 JY is generally considered better than a 12-3 Playoff win. (But we've yet to see a prospective Yokozuna get two straight 12-3 yusho...)

@ I saw it reported that Hosh will be promoted. You know I originally thought Hosh should not be in consideration this tournament. From there I figured 12 wins and a rousing playoff couple with JSA desperation might do it, BUT DAMN! Hosh’s performance since his 3rd loss was epic, and then winning 2 grueling playoffs after beating Koto (who almost had him)… Hosh found a whole new level, and it they don’t give it to him now he looks ready to go 15-0 in March to claim it.

  • @thedarkwizardmahabra

I think the only way they consider promoting Hoshoryu is if he wins a 3/4-way playoff in dominating fashion. Even then, I think the council's bias against his uncle will keep him out with anything besides two yushos in a row. Great tournament so far! I wish I knew what was going on with Kotozakura, though.
