Folks tend to think that a shorter scale length will equal a thinner sound, but the actual physics of scale length means that a short scale will have more fundamental (the bass-y part) and less harmonics. My short scale Mustang has a ridiculous amount of lowend. To combat the lack of higher mid harmonics, I put Daddario Flatwound Chromes on it, which are really bitey and aggressive flats. I record professionally with that bass all the time. The reduced string tension also lets me leave the action pretty high, which gives me that James Jamerson “rounded attack and quick decay” sound easily :)
The secret weapon with this bass is pressing all the pickup selectors down which puts the pickups in series and throws out a massive signal which brings the bass to life.
Nerdery not mentioned in the vid: 1) The Acinonyx is directly inspired by the 1960’s Italian curio: Goya Panther short scale. 2) Juan Alderete was pivotal in development of this bass after introducing his Goya to Carey Nordstrand, who inspected it addressed all the design flaws in his own updated version. 3)Push all the pickup buttons in at once for ‘secret beast mode’
I'm a complete convert to 30" scale basses. I bought a Squier Jaguar SS, sold all my 34" basses, and I've never been happier. I think people are starting to wise up to the fact that they sound good and are easier to play. If you don't like the loose string tension, you can get heavier-gauge strings, which is what I did.
I've been really curious to try a fanned fretboard (e.g. Dingwall). Now I'm curious to try the short scale too. I hope I'm not developing a bad case of G.A.S. ;-)
I had a long scale bass when I was studying guitar. I got my first short scale about 9 months ago. Now I have 4 and I am playing bass all day long. Complete game changer.
On a 1-10 scale, this video is a 100. Absolute gold with these precious kids. The bass sounds amazing. I'd absolutely add this to my collection and would PLAY it.
Short scale basses are the bomb! I bought a ridiculously cheap Ibanez GSRM-20B MikroBass and my bass teacher was a bit flabbergasted by how great it actually is. Sounds amazing, looks classy in the flesh and is a doddle to play. Have got a set of LaBella flats ready come first string change. Great to see the interaction with your kids, looks like you have a great relationship with them.
Yep, the 5-string version is not too shabby either. B string is a bit floppy but not unusable and I like the sounds of J-style pickups on that one. There's also a Jackson 4-string pj with the same scale length and price range.
I gotta say it's weird seeing cat stickers from my shipping desk on your video, but I'm so stoked to hear you riffing on it with that smile on your face. Carey makes great products.
Kids are adorable & I love where you live. Suggestion: " Block-Out " your Mailing information. I live in NYC, and (unfortunately) we are always on High-Alert. Would not want to see you have a bad experience. Love the channel brother.
The kids are so cute! I love my Acinonyx and watching your unboxing reminded me of my own - except you got much more swag than I did! I've been continuing to use different button combinations and really learning what songs they are each best for. As you say, "there's not one tone on this bass that I have not loved."
Interesting bass. It's nice to see some of these builders giving us some good, high quality short scale basses--and some interesting features like that switching. Of course, there has been Fender Mustang basses forever, and many of those have been great basses over the years. But a lot of short scale basses in the past were just cheap junk. Now there are some serious, professional short scale basses--quite a number to choose from. This one obviously, but also Fender's American Mustang, Music Man short scale Stingrays, Spector Bantam, Sandberg Lionel, and a bunch of others. I love my short scale Stingray. Someone else here mentioned that they have sold all their long scale basses and gone totally short scale. I'm tempted to do that as well, because now, like I said, there are some killer short scale basses out there which do not compromise in sound or quality. And short scales are just more fun to play, faster, lighter on the shoulder during long gigs, less stressful on the arm reach.
I’ve moved to 30 inch scale exclusively. My primary bass is a EBMM Short Scale Stingray but this bass sounds sooooooo good. I also am very impressed by the Sandberg Lionel. FWIW, I also have a short scale SBMM that I had defretted. Very cool

11 out of 10 for Bass-Dad moves! That was awesome! I'm not sure about that rolling technique, you may want to get him some training before you promote him to roadie! LOVED IT!
Scott, I like how close the neck pickup is to the fretboard. It would be interesting if you can go through your fleet of basses and show how much pickup placement changes the tone of guitars. What is the bass with the pickup closest to the fretboard, which one has the pickup closest to the bridge, P/J/P90/H style pickups in different positions. I modded my P-bass with two J pickups one up by the neck and one back by the bridge and it's a fun player but I didn't go to the far extremes (I also play regular guitar most often). What are the extreme pickup placement basses you have?
i have a few shortscale basses , my favorites are the hofner ignition and epiphone viola , both strung with labella flatwound strings . i don't know why but there's something about the construction of the violin bass that gives it such an awesome bottom end . and they're just sexy as hell !
That’s a seriously special bass. I _will_ get one if I can. The bass’s greatness is totally overshadowed by the fact that you have the cutest kids on the planet.
Never heard anyone refer to a tone as “Burpy” but that it is. I wonder is there any advanced to the machine head configuration? Or is it just a design choice? Looks a bit banjo.
Amazing Bass Scott, I am sold! Amazing family Bro, well done in the Dad category. I love my Sterling Music Man Sub but I can def see me getting a second one. Short scale Bass rocks👍
Im pausing at the 2:18 mark and getting excited along w/you Scott, but I HAD to pause to let u know that i see your daughter has your hosting genes.. Jussayin 🤷🏽🤙🏾
Yeah, the bass is cool, but how adorable are your kids!? 🤩 And so comfy with the camera as well. Really though, I liked the bass. But for some reason I struggled to hear any real difference in the tones you got this time. 🤷♂️
That's a very cool bass but I have noticed that I'm not a fan of the buttons I prefer knobs the buttons pretty much assign a preset eq with the knobs I can find any tone I want I would like all those buttons replaced as knobs and then it would be real sweet!
Ya know, now we will want the kids in all the rest of the posts. Reminds me of one of my first basses. A short scale Epi viola bass. My guess is they're also good starter basses for kids with smaller hands.

Love the inclusion of short scale people for the short scale bass video 🙂

I was disappointed Scott didn't demo "OMG" mode.
You’re right. All buttons in!
Yeah, we need Scott to demo the OMG mode once again!
Only thing cooler than the bass is the kids. I love it.
I'm glad that his kids are growing up knowing that a bass is not a B I G G U I T A R

I love 32 inch scale but unfortunately there aren't very many of those and one of the most common ones I hate for other reasons.
I had a long scale bass when I was studying guitar. I got my first short scale about 9 months ago. Now I have 4 and I am playing bass all day long. Complete game changer.

Scott, I just love the way you interact with your kids, good on you. Oh yeah, the bass is cool also.
Hopefully we will see this bass in more videos! Great playing as always and what an interesting bass guitar indeed. Cheers from Texas!
I'm not sold on the buttons, but boy does it sound incredible.

So precious! I have not got to the playing yet, just keep rewinding to "We're just fixing the camera, ok?"
I can say from my experience of owning one - This bass is UNREAL. Scott, if you’re reading this… PUT SOME FLATS ON IT, AND IT WILL BLOW YOUR MIND!!!
Change to piccolo strings and then tell your guitar solo, sorry I don’t need you anymore
@@Tax2Me 🤨
Sounded pretty good with rounds.
Great video AND family time. ❤
Your playing is, as always, exceptional. So melodic and rhythmic.
Cuteness overload with your kids! I need go see some of my nieces and nephews this weekend...

This is officially the cutest video in your channel. Period.
Lots of fun. Thanks y'all! God bless y'all.
Sounds insane! Modern vintage! Wow. Looks like an Italia Klira or Edmond bass.
Love seeing the kids! They have grown so much.
Question, Why the glove?
My main bass is a 1967 Starfire with Alembic Series II, pickups, electronics and hardware. It sounds amazing.
So fun getting the kids involved.
Liked the bass. Loved the kids!😎🤘
The two kids are amazing! 🤣🤣🤣
I love it really nice instrument, and I've been all Ga Ga over my fender mustang that bass gives it a run for the money😍
Im an EB SG player, I love short scale. I like that one a lot too.
Great episode! The kids were so funny.
My favorite sbl video I have seen
Such a fun and funny video guys! I'm definitely going to check this bass out.
watching your bike riding advertisement and I was like holy s&*% did he really slap the guitarist!!! LMFAO THX SCOTT

Man you got the life, bless you and your family
🤦🏽🤦🏽🤦🏽🤦🏽 . . . . those tones - that growl-like "burp" & the specs of it overall.. 🗣 WOAH!!
Can a short scale bass have a double octave neck? Or is that the difference between short scale and long scale bass necks?
Picking up bass I figured I'd only be interested in the standard long scale but I think I may need a short scale bass guitar...
I also love the loose feel of the short scale basses. I have a Starfire with 96s on it, and it's one bendy and rubbery feeling bass
11 out of 10 for Bass-Dad moves! That was awesome! I'm not sure about that rolling technique, you may want to get him some training before you promote him to roadie! LOVED IT!
Do all short scale basses fret buzz so much??
The cutest kids Made my day!!....... And then that bass 🥰 🎸 double whammy.... nice design.

I remember when Carey Nordstrand was developing this bass. Always wanted to try one!

Scott, check Goya Panther 2 Bass made in Italy 1960. The Bassbuilders probably took inspiration from him to build this miracle.
That's exactly the case. Goya are so hard to find and Nordstrand wanted to recreate in a modern way.
Do you have any experience with Serek or Wilcock basses? Seem to be highly praised in the short scale community.
You have a beautiful family, great job in raising them cool!
Your a lucky man , those are some cute kids . Love to hear litle ones with British accents ! Thanks , made my day . Also cool bass !
Sounds good!
Wonderful Review!!! Very Cool Kids!!!
so, what brand is it?
for me it never made sense, when someone showing his new bass and isn't willing to name the model and specs in the description
Yeah, the bass is cool, but how adorable are your kids!? 🤩
And so comfy with the camera as well.

Cool bass.
So many buttons, so many possible things to break/malfunction. That always worries me.
Put Black Wrapped Strings on it, I think you'll love it!
I'm "burpy" too, and no one touches me like that!

I just ordered a bass never really played but what is the glove for ?
He has a nerve condition that the glove eliminates so he can play.
Scott , you need to add your kids more often to your videos !!
They are cute and hilarious 😂
Lovely kids God bless them and you bro .... bass sounds awesome
Dumb question? What brand is the bass? I see the name on the headstock but i can't decipher it. lol
A modern take on a 60s Teisco. I like it.
Actually the Goya Panther II ‘60

Are your roadies getting union scale? :P
Did he not discover the best tone in this bass; the “secret weapon”? Push in all 4 pickup selector switches and throw it in series mode.
All buttons in for series mode!
Could a right handed person play a left handed bass like that to have easier access to the controls? Keep up the awesome work.
String it upside down and give it a shot
THAT's how to do an unboxing video 👍
