In this lesson you’re going to learn:
- The different parts of the bass.

i’m a 17 year old girl who is obsessed with rock music and today my first bass came and i was so happy but all the beginner tutorials were confusing me so i began thinking it just wasn’t for me.... this was so clear and i’m so motivated to continue :)) thank you
Nice, hope you’re still at it!
If something is getting difficult for you just search for other tutorials and otherr ways of putting the information so you can understand it ^^
It will be kinda difficult at the beginning but try to don't get overwhelmed and continue, I promise is worth it
hahah are we the same person?
Im too 17 lets become friends 😙
W G hey bestie
OK, 61 years old here and got my first ever bass in the mail today and just had my first lesson. "These are the strings" was exactly where I needed to start. Thanks Scott.
LOL... exactly! I looked at a "Lesson 1 for Beginners" Scott taught 11 years ago on RUclips and I was completely discouraged! I thought, WOW, this guy is the worst teacher ever for beginners. Waaaayyyyy too advanced for beginners!! Then I searched Google for bass beginner lessons and it brought me right back to Scott's RUclips channel to this TRUE actual beginner bass guitar lesson. He must have realized just 2 years ago that most beginners are not intermediate, but actual beginners!! LOL! Anyways, this video is more at my level!
@@ptaweston 👍😂
Me, too (old chick here) this past july. 'These are the strings' is perfect. I am still fumbling several beginner videos. Please so share!
I myself just turned 61 and my wife bought me a bass. I love music but am totally not musically talented. (yet). First real lesson is coming soon. Im scared to death Im not going to learn this. I have small hands and its just difficult. (sounds crazy but true) Any tips on how everyone is doing if you are a beginner? Thank you all in advance and rock on.
I played Trumpet in the Elementary school band, in High school I took guitar lessons thinking I would be able to play like EVH, fail. In my early thirties I bought a cheap short scale bass at a pawn shop, failed again. Now turning 59 years old in June, I purchased a full scale p bass and with a little more patience and the help of RUclips videos, I'm going to play bass this time around.😎
What a great lesson, I've just bought my first P Bass guitar, I've never played a musical instrument in my life, but what a great way to lean here in my retirement. By the way, I'm 66 years old. 😀
That is SO awesome dude! Really pumped that this video helped you kick off your bass journey! Enjoy the ride!
I'm 70 years old and just decided to start playing bass. Thanks for your lessons to get me started.
Me too, same age and no experience
Serio? Really?🎉
Do you play other instruments?
here 53 and am about to start😅
Being a "young" 63 yr. old, I decided to learn how to play the bass. On Father's day I opened my black Marcus Miller v3 4 string bass. Your beginner's tutorial is a godsend. After reading comments from other beginners and encouraging words from real players, I don't feel alone. Thanks to all of my musical, low end friends🎸 Grace & Peace
I’m 66 years of age mate! I’ve just got round to trying to learn the bass in my retirement! It’s took me 50 years😂😂. Thank God there are people like you to make to eventual feel like I can at least learn to do it! Thanks again for this up load. Still a bit nervous about timing it up though🥴. What’s the easiest electronic device to buy to help me do it! Once again you’re a great teacher!👍
I'm 28 and I was thinking I might be too old, you changed my mind I think
I'm not too far behind you. I'm 50 and have been wanting to learn bass for decades. I've been playing drums since I was 13 and have loved it! I love playing with great bass players. I have been eyeballing the bass for so long. I'm buying a Fender beginner acoustic bass this week.
Fantastic! I just turned 60 and starting now. I've always loved hearing live music and was envious of the musicians making it happen. I have no idea why it took me so long to try and play something. Welp... here I am!
I am 39 and I have started learning bass. Your testimony has encouraged me. Thank you 🙏
Dare I say it, but I am 72 years young and have played the Bass Guitar (badly) for almost 60 years. Thanks to The Bass God (Scott) I find I have been playing the Bass wrong, wrong, wrong. I am now enjoying, thanks to Scott, a new lease of life playing all of the old tunes correctly from The Beatles, to Pink Floyd, fromThe Kinks to Deep Purple. Cheers Scott, long may you reign.
My 1st ever bass arrives 9am in the morning i'm sitting here can't sleep with excitement thank you for giving me a grounding. The theory bit about a C lost me though
I always remember it as GDAE, like a greeting "G'day!" Though it's top down, and a bit silly, it's helped me lol

I’ve played since I was 9 years old and eventually professional for the last 50+ years and taught many along the way. You’re a good teacher. It would have shaved off a few years if you were my teacher in 1964. Found this video amongst others for a friend that lives far from me. I recommend this video to him and I’m sure he’ll learn from it. You are the best. Thanks.
I'm a 63 year old man who always wanted to play the bass guitar like from my school days but never dared to play it because it looked so intimidating. I just received my Father's Day gift a beautiful Bass guitar from my son yesterday and after checking out so many youtube videos, yours just gave me the confidence that i can finally play it if i just followed your bass guitar lessons. So thanks so much Scott
🧡🧡🧡
Man, I felt silly being almost 39 and wanting to learn! Good luck to us!
Please make a playlist of these video’s, in the right order,
So everybody following these series, can easily find them back,
And can actually learn something.....much appreciated, Thanks for your effort! 🐥
yea!!!
This is actually a really good idea, cuz there's obviously good and bad orders to learn things, you don't want to have a bunch of gaps in your understanding either. I wonder if anyone has done what you suggested
There's an SBL playlist in linked below the video
Just got my first bass at 38 years old, and watched a few beginner videos today. This was easily the best, really making it easy to understand how to hold the instrument, how to pluck the strings and how to actually start making some pleasant noises. Amazing, keep doing what you do.
As someone who's interested in the bass and coming from a place of no knowledge what so ever, this was amazingly useful! Thanks indeed.
you can get an awesome bass for £100 now ..thats 1 dinner at a fancy restaurant
Agreed
Same here mate, it's really really helped me.
YOU ARE HEAVEN SENT!!!!! YOU HELPED ME TREMENDOUSLY.
Hello. I haven't tried yet, how are you progressing?
Thank you so much for uploading all of your videos to RUclips and being such a great teacher. I've wanted a bass guitar since I was a teenager and finally got one at the age of 43. I had zero experience w/string instruments prior to acquiring it. After doing extensive RUclips research on how to play the bass, I subscribed to my two favorite channels/instructors. You and the BassBuzz guy. Your tutorials are super helpful; especially the beginner ones. It's surely boring for veteran players to discuss the beginning steps of playing the instrument but it's super important for novices like myself and others to learn the most important basics before trying to play. Thank you for being such a great teacher. I watched some of your more advanced videos (even though I'm not ready for them yet) and found them to be very inspiring. I have so much to practice & learn; you are quickly becoming a household regular here, lol. Even when I'm not practicing I watch your videos in hope to retain knowledge. You're awesome.
I've been playing Bass close to 30 years and I binge on your lessons and posts. Thanks for the refreshers and the knowledge you share every lesson
me too !... amazing the things you didnt know that you knew but couldnt articulate !!
Scott, great beginner tutorial⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. I’m 65 and just got my first acoustic bass. I loved EADG and the posturing techniques.
Scott, thanks for this video. I just purchased a bass, and I have watched a lot of RUclips videos to learn the basics of this instrument. Your material is professionally taught and easy to follow.
I'm about to turn 37 and I just bought my first bass. This was my first lesson, and I already feel so comfortable. I am looking forward to watching more videos and I want to say Thank You for making it simple!
my first bass gets here tomorrow. vid came in clutch preciate it
What bass are you getting? I got a tobias by toby for 100 but ill be upgrading to a mmp7
@@lwavy1416 Glarry GJazz, low budget option but im still gonna go ape on it
Hard to go ape if you don't know how to play lol.
@@mrbungle7586 you clearly dont know how to go ape bro
@@swagmoneyant906 I know how to go ape shit. You should post your 1st bass case opening, followed by the begginer going ape on bass session. Should be entertaining.
Scott, I just picked up the bass. I've been watching some tutorial videos from some very talented players... but you, you have the gift of teaching. There's a big difference between being a great player and teaching, vs being a great player and plus having the gift of teaching.
Just by watching the first section (parts of the base) I learned even more than just that.
Thank you.
Well said!
AMEN! Me too. I'm 70 and my bf bought me a nice beginning bass. It's not super expensive but has a nice sound for a lessor model.
Picked up the bass for the first time today and came across your video. Thank you for making a video for someone that knows nothing about playing but always wanted to learn. (I am 53). I will continue to follow you. Thank You!!!
I LOVE your teaching method!!!! Ive also just started playing bass and im thrilled to have found your channel!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
Thank you. Finally someone who understands us beginners. I WILL follow.
I so appreciate Scott's patience in explaining the anatomy of the bass and taking total (older) newbies like me thought the very elementary aspects of learning this truly wonderful instrument. Thank you Scott!
Appreciate that, glad you found it useful!!
You are a great teacher...ive been watching over and over until I get everything right... and do the finger work out as well thanks Scott
Great lesson! Excellent examples and just what I needed after buying my first guitar (bass) today at 62 YO. Thank you Scott!
This was f'ing GREAT. Thank you Scott. I started playing bass in an Irish rock band back in the day, and was being taught by the guitar player, which was helpful, but this is great! I hope to expand my bass playing abilities with your help and enjoy some jamming with him again. (band didn't last that long, was great fun though). Thank you Scott!!!!
This is wonderful - what a great teacher, I'm hooked!
Hi I’m 60 years and just bought my first bass
Fender Squire.
I came across you video and loved it. There are many teaching videos on RUclips I found your video easy to follow
I subscribed and liked your channel
Thank you
David.
Thanks, Scott! I've been playing drums over 50 years and have always loved the bass as well. Just got a beginner's 36" bass just for fun. Love your first lesson; clearly and simply explained! Almost took the bass back but now I won't!
I’m not a bass player, but I love music and enjoy learning about it. Great content!
This is such a great video. Finally decided to learn bass using my dad's old bass. He played a 76ish (I think based on the serial) US Fender P-Bass FRETLESS NO LINES. Gunna need these videos to figure this thing out, see what my saxophone days carry over.
Hi Scott. Just signed up for your SBL fretboard lessons and added the extra classes and personal instructor. Super excited to start. I never even held a bass till 2 weeks ago when a Les Paul Bass was offered to me and it was such a great deal I couldn't refuse it. Wish me luck in your course.
This was what i needed. Thank you so much. Look forward to going thru all ur videos!!!
It is my first time with a bass in my hands and your tutorial has been very helpful. Super easy to understand
This was a really awesome beginner video! I've been playing bass for a couple years, and have just been teaching myself and I'm really trying to be adamant about improving my technique. I will definitely be watching more of your videos!
I bet you're great
I AM new to the Bass. And I have never commented in the history of RUclips Musicians, and I AM SO GRATEFUL to You, why, because, you have kept it simple and accurate. I AM a Singer, and decided to learn Bass in 2023. You just taught Me, how to tune my bass!!!! Wow!!!! SUPER EXCITED!!!!! THANK YOU!!!! Sincerely.
I'm loving this - never thought I'd be able to actually run a bass. This is just great, thank you Scott. No music in history - just ...wow!
Fantastic video Scott. Have just ordered a bass guitar, looking forward to getting started. You have explained everything so clearly and exactly how to get setup.
I’m 25 years old and just got my very first bass. My goal is to be able to play confidently by the end of the year. Thank you so much for this! It’s helped a ton!
Thank you Scott! I am learning the bass and this lesson was just wonderful. I followed you note by note. Thank you so much! :)
Omg this video is so helpful! I knew how to play guitar but I never really understood how things work, I just normally go with the flow coz that's how most of the tutorials I found online teaches us. Bass guitar is my dream instrument since I was 12, now that I'm 22, I'm finally able to buy one for myself, this tutorial of yours is as clear as the day. Now I can't wait for mine to arrive
Don’t know why I’m watching this I’ve been playing for years lol
I think it’s because Scott is mesmerizing!
Also helps you become a better teacher
I don't know, why I've watched this. Never played any instrument, and don't have a bass =)
Lol same here, been playing for 35 years!
Played for 4 years, stopped a year ago, and im going back in so this might help
Thanks for a great, comprehensive first lesson! I got my bass for Christmas, ad have been searching for a great starter. Thanks!
I have wanted to learn bass guitar for most of my life. I have looked at a couple of online lessons before but this one really connected. Thank you.
I wanted to say thank you for this. It really helped me.
Thanks Scott, great first lesson! Finding my middle two fingers have a mind of their own in wanting to fly up between playing the 3rd and 5th frets, but will keep at it. 😀
This video was amazing! I am an on and off bass player for ten years, and always get ahead of myself and fed up when I cannot progress. This video really showed me that my foundation knowledge is shocking!!! Especially technique, I am always uncomfortable when I play, now I know why 😅 I got bought a lovely Fender PB and now can focus on these lessons and enjoy it.....PROPERLY 🤣 Thanks sooooooo much Scott, I look forward to really growing and learning as a bass player under your enthusiastic guidance 🎸
The best easy to follow no drama bass tutorial of all time! Thank you so much Sensei!!!
I just picked up the bass because I feel like everyone wants to learn it but no one wants to play it and I just wanna say thank you for this amazing video, you have already improved me so much in just this 1 video!!
Hi Scott, great lesson, so on the E string you saying when the 5th finger touches the string all two other fingers must as well do, they shouldn't stick out, do they also touch and press on the string(more like playing the string) or they don't at all , they just shouldn't stick out only?
I’ve been a member since 2018. It was the best decision I made for my instrumental instruction. It’s all asynchronous, so you MUST be disciplined enough to stay with it, but the sheer amount of information and help/support that SBL provides is WELL WORTH THE INVESTMENT.
I love this channel, thank you so much Scott!!!!
So. So. Good. Been a guitarist for 10 years and have always wanted to play bass. My bass arrives in the next 3 days. I cannot wait. You sir are a brilliant teacher.
Bought myself a bass guitar as Christmas gift to myself, my first one at age 44... feels like Im starting late but super excited to get started with it. This lesson was really informative and made it not seem so daunting.
Yes dude! Sooo much more videos for beginners on our channel! Here's some more that might take your fancy:

Absolutely brilliant video Scott. What a teacher.
Waiting very eagerly to get my first bass, and this was such a great lesson, can't wait to come back to it when I have the instrument!
I’m finally getting around to picking up my bass after so many years, and this made it a much less intimidating experience, thanks!
From Fiji and Belgium. I would learn more of the Bass Guitar techniques as soon as possible. I would become the Fijian-Belgian intermediate bassist some day.
YOU ROCK! (The patience you have) Best 1st lesson for a beginner.
Great lesson, thank you so much for sharing the knowledge

I just ordered a bass because of this video! 😂
Nice beginner bass lesson. A lot of new basses were sold to us beginners over the past year. Some people watching don't have a bass yet. You provided really good coverage of things to know in the beginning.
Definitely one of the best beginner bass tutorials I’ve watched so far!
Never realized my hands were this damn small. My damn pinky barely gets to the 5th fret 😔
dude same. Mans like "hold it like an orange" BRUH I HAVE KINDERGARTNER HANDS
@@c4tg1rl10 lmaoooooooo! Exactly!
Don't worry. They'll stretch over time.
Gladly I'm not the only one with baby hands here 😔
I literally just got bass 30 minutes ago and my hands r just 😎💀👍💔
Finally figured it out. Scott's trying to look like Marcus Miller. Not just him but his USA doppelganger too lol.
Love it. Truly. Not only have the "Production Values" taken a leap forward, your "elemental" teaching has evolved considerably. That said... at round about 21:12 I could see Scott "The Bass Man" grinning from ear to ear as he (I believe), suppressed all of his instinctual needs to "let it rip" and get into a much deeper groove? That was cool. Thanks lad.
Mate, just got my first bass guitar and I'm so excited. Your videos/classes are the top notch!! So far I'm just practicing the very first lesson but as I said, for a beginner it's great!! Easy to follow, easy to understand you and it makes sence! What better could you get 😂😂
Now that is a sexy Sadowsky, love the colour and pattern. Which model is that?
Oow and nice lesson ofcourse ;)
I think that's nyc satin deluxe
I just got mine for Christmas 😅
me too!!! haha
Me too!! 😅 hopefully it will be used well
Thank you for this video. I love the bass and I’m just starting out. I usually play guitar so I end up playing my bass like a guitar with a pick, but it’s so fun! Thank you again!
thank you so much i,m an entire newbie with no experience whatsoever just decided to learn to play at 63 years of age this is exactly what i needed to get me started thank you so much brilliant
Curse these small hands, I can barely stretch my fingers to reach the frets
Massive hands suck as well though cause your big finger tips accidently hit other notes.
Same problem. But over time they will stretch and it will get better
I only play the guitar. I'm here because I want to learn how to play bass now but I can already tell you: it gets better. I have tiny hand and I struggled so hard but your hands will adjust, I promise! Just takes practice
You know what they say, big hands, big....
handspan
I got a shortscale. I'm absolutely in love with my Ibanez grsm25!!
I prefer Eddie Ate Dynamite, Good!
That's probably why, as a guitarist, I have always found basses somewhat evil.
I just started playing a few days ago and your videos, along with BassBuzz, have really sped up the process.
Thank you so much for this video. I loved how u explained it!! Thank you!!
18:05 SOMEONE TEACH THIS MAN ZERO xD
One note of future "beginner" series, is that I've seen dime a dozen bass players, amateurs and pro alike, that BENDS their string/ notes inadvertently when playing bass, and they don't see/hear it going out of pitch. They're not aware of it. Probably a combination of pressing too hard down on the string, and they think they don't have a grip on the string. Especially on RUclips. Mind you, they can be advanced in their years and thumb and slap like its nobodys business.
I urge you to take care of these bad habits, right from the start, and encourage beginners to sit in front of a mirror and look while they are fretting down any string. To see if they're bending it or not. And make sure beginners are wary and vigilant about it from then on. Also, maybe a stretch and going out on a risky limb for you, making tips and hints for those with this bad habit, to get rid of it, even if it "degrades" them in their otherwise virtuosic playing.
If there weres such an invention that gives a jolt through the string (active bass anyone?) whenever a player bends any string without really knowing it, I would be all game. Maybe a bit crude, but at least some red laser to flash along the string if it's way out.
I would find at least 12 of those YT videos, in a heartbeat, where apparently, otherwise skilled, and virtuosic bass players has this bad habit. The sooner it is addressed in the/any beginners lessons, the better.
obviously you are not obssesed with this and have lost absolutely no sleep or even woke in the night to the horror
..i too do not suffer from any such related affliction and have no objection to the posture / tuning whilst plqaying / pocket management issues that may arise elsewhere
..im off to fold my towels by size despite the evidence that rolling prevents creasing
This was absolutely amazing, can’t wait for my bass to arrive, thank you!
you are an amazing instructor!! im getting my first ever jazz bass tomorrow. so excited
whoever edited this video pls make yourself known so i can praise ur skills 😍
I also have a crucifix kit i would like to try out ... if its sold on amazon is it still hate crime or am i jus an amazon extremist ... FSM be with you ... yarrrr

So glad I've found your channel. Cheers!
Such a good start ... Thanks you're a great teacher .
So good to find your incredible channel again. I was forced to stop playing when I had a brain aneurysm burst.Againt all odds I survived. My coordination was gone, couldnt speak very well, i had to learn to walk agIn..They said I wouldn't make it..but here I am. I'm back now, after A LOT of hard therapy. I had given away my Squire VM Jazz and Fender Aerodyn Jazz as well as my ebs cab & kittle reidmar amp because I thought I would never play again. Thanks to your channel and your incredible way of teaching and making learning fun, I went out and got myself a used Squire vintage modified Jazz bass & a Fender rumble 40 amp. Both are getting me going again. Thanks for all the great videos and the very upbeat vibe of the channel.👍🏻😎
