I love White Josh. He is like, so done with the shenanigans from moment 1, and keeps calling out the craziness and the nonsense but still feeling like a real person.
I like that even he gets called out from time to time. He veers into Jim territory sometimes; so removed and above it all that he becomes an asshole. But he gets checked for it. And he doesn't magically become Rebecca's friend by the end like with Dwight, a dude that Jim actively low level tortured for 10 years. His aloofness and need to be cool gets called out for slowing him down and preventing him from getting anything done with his protein bars. I think I'd like him to have been a little more messed up, everyone else is pretty messed up, but it's not as bad ss Jim and that's something
I think the most amazing thing about the finale is that after four seasons of understanding the songs as just emotions filtered through the format of musicals and then we start to understand them as the way that Rebecca processes things when she dissociates, it adds a third layer of interpretation and allows the series to exist as a loop where you can view the entire thing as the music and dramatised stories as written by Rebecca. It's truly brilliant and it really added a new layer of depth to the entire series upon rewatch.
Hearing you talk about the finale has me tearing up all over again. The first time I watched it I could hardly believe how well they'd stuck the landing. It's truly the gold standard of TV finales.
07:55 when It starts playing I'm good a person, right after Rebeca pledges guilty, the show got me in such a way that I stood still in front of the tv for a full 10 minutes
I was WAITING for you to mention the lyrical/poetic genius of the lyrics "I used to think I was a hero/Can't believe she didn't come/To tell me that she needed/So much more than I could give" literally the BEST lyrics of the whole show 🤣
I'm SO HAPPY you included praise for that 3 second shot in "I'm not sad you're sad" because I find it so impactful every time and it does not get enough love! Rachel's acting is really at her best, there. It reminds me of a certain scene in the movie Pearl!
I am not religious in the slightest bit but god bless you for making this!! Although I don't agree with all your opinions (some of my favorite episodes were ranked low and I am butthurt) BUT I recognize and appreciate how many hours of work went into creating these videos. It's hard to find people who share the same passion for this cute campy show so thank you.
yess at the love for "i give good parent" it's CRIMINALLY underrated! Never in any of the cast list of best or favourite songs, no reprise and they never did it live
Santa Ana Winds was one of those songs that I initially was very bemused about. Then, it gets to the final stanza and it almost made me tear up. Thank you for this video, it reminded me after having not rewatched for a few years just how special this show is. I recommend it to literally everyone telling them to ignore what it sounds like and just go in with a blank slate.
Great choice for #1. I'd have to do some major thinking to decide which episode is MY favorite, but that one's definitely a contender. I've rewatched "Strip Away My Conscience" so many times it's made me question my sexuality.
Right? The previous video started off as a little bit of a downer, since it was all about why those episodes were not amazing, so to get to this one where they just grow progressively better and better! Hooray!
i love hearing someone talk about this show with the same passion i have for it, truly one of the most brilliant things ever on television i just have so so much love for it
I believe that it is a testament to how great this show is, that you could possibly justify many different ranking of episodes, depending on the themes that maybe hit home for the viewer For me the Getting Bi episode would be ranked higher, since it meant a lot at the time when there was almost no good bi representation in media I just love this show so much, it means so much to me Thank you for taking the time to do this!
You made me cry with your analysis of season 4, ep 17 when Paula get's into the abstract teather space!! I LOVE this TV-show! I still listen to its songs in a loop!
One of my proudest achievements is learning to sing ‘after everything you made me do (that you didn’t ask for)’ I love it so much! Anyway, thank you so much for making these video! I love this show so much and have been trying to get my friends into it, but they’re always turned off because of the title and I rarely see crazy ex girlfriend videos on RUclips. I was so happy when I saw this on my recommended, thank you so much again!
While I don't have bpd but I have autism. After years of feeling that there was something wrong with me or that I was somehow as Rebecca says: "Missin a class in school that thought you to be normal" I can curantee that when you finally are about to get or get a proper diagnosis it feels just like the Diagnosis song. Even though I myself realised that I might be autistic and I would myself ask for help I still remember the relif and realisation of that autism spectrum diagnosis. That paper and those doctor's words after years of confusion and bullying. I felt like a new world opening for me. So thank you crazy ex girlfriend for repesenting my feelings once again so well
the view count on this duology of videos is criminal. Are you telling me the market of people who love Crazy Ex Girlfriend and wanted to discus the episodes is only worth 1.8k views? Thank you for the work you put towards this
@KelseyHontz I hope it will! I'm actually going to watch episodes 6 and 7 with some friends as we speak since I needed to hook more people on to this show, and we've been watching it the past few weeks. I hope you have a good rest of your day!
@@KelseyHontz she's our one-scene queen 🤩🤩 and nice catch on harvey being spiders! i completely missed him too when i first saw the ep and only noticed after i did a rewatch AFTER ive seen wwdits. another interesting guest actor was ester dean from the textmergency episode! she played cynthia-rose in pitch perfect
What i find so sweet about Audra is that she was the one that remind Rebecca about her mothers motives when she visit's, which lead to her to seeing the reality of the situation.
The thing about that moment I think about a lot is that it can be read 2 completely opposite ways. It could be Audra understanding Rebecca in a way no one else does because of their childhoods, and knows Naomi doesn’t really have her best interest at heart and warning Rebecca before she loses all agency and ends up back at square one, or it can just be her hitting a new level of callous and petty and going for the sole purpose of planting doubt and undermining Rebecca’s chance at supposed recovery.
Returning after finally watching the finale to one again thank you for helping me find my favorite show. And 💖 for ranking “Why is Josh in a Bad Mood” near the top. That episode is everything)))
41:30 i feel so seen lmao. thank you for these 2 videos, i haven’t watched this show in a while but it’s one of my favorites and i love hearing other people’s opinions on it!
44:37. Well, I do know what it is like to get such a diagnosis, and this song was the main reason that I mustered the courage to press for it. To learn such a thing about yourself while being over 30 yo gives a lot of perspective, and it was hard thing to do, mainly when I was getting other messages like: "it wont change anything", or: "You are just looking for excuses again". Including the physchologist that I was seeing at the time... I already loved the show before that point (event tho i stopped watching for a while after the suicide episode, and I consider season 4 to be fairly worse than the other seasons, with worse og songs and reprises), but for the impact it had on my life I can only be grateful and I wont stop loving it. Rebecca's reprise will never fail to make me cry... With the right context it just hits so hard to see how disingenuous she gets. I also empathise a lot with those feelings she has. Can't discuss everything, it would take all day. It is always a delight to remember crazy ex gf :) Thanks
What a wonderful list (both of them). I enjoyed your insights and of course reliving my favorite show with another fan. #1 was brilliant-strip away is good enough to claim that spot but 4 great songs-yessssss!! Thanks for doing this. I’m always looking for more discussion of my face show!!!
It's so great to see more people talking about this show even years after it ended! It's so good and has so many firsts for network tv and I think television in general. I've somehow always been a fan of Rebecca/Nathaniel, even though I feel kinda guilty that the parody of a spoiled white dude somehow become my favorite. He's just written so well!
Thanks for making these! It was a great way to revisit the show all these years later. Your analysis was really good and you have a beautiful and expressive voice.
If Greg should have been done with Rebecca after she slept with his dad, and Josh should have been with her after well everthing, then honestly, Nathaniel should have been done with her after she put a hit on Mona. The show is very underrated, and I belive that Dr. Akopian was a stand in for the audience.
The only reason I disagree is because Nathaniel literally put his own hit out on...was it Josh's grandfatherr? Basically, yes, if you're the one effected by the "hit" it's definitely different but it feels much more like something he would excuse.
This is brilliant and the timing for me finding this list was great since Crazy Ex-Girlfriend just left Norwegian Netflix so that I don't get to watch it at the moment. This list helps though, reminding me why I also love the show :)
Ayyy fellow asexual! I also started this show without knowing it was a musical, and was astounded not only by the quality of the songwriting, but also by how conscious that was. When the narrative acknowledged Rebecca as mentally ill, I couldn't believe it because I was so used to mental illness not being discussed or properly represented on mainstream television. This show is one of a kind and deserves so much praise. Thank you for these two wonderful videos
I had probably one of the most unique introductions to this show I was a background/extra on this show around 5-6 times(most likely because I’m Filipino and I was born in West Covina, and most of my family lives there) The last time I was on the show I part of the wedding reception on “Paula Needs to Get Over Josh” Crazy Ex Girlfriend is a great production and everyone who works on it is amazing I feel like I owe Rachel Bloom because I got a union voucher out of this show And only NOW am I getting really into the show The first time I was a background/extra on the show was the 2nd episode
Oh wow, this is such an awesome comment! I definitely could not have been a background actor because I would have been trying to sing and dance along with Rachel Bloom the whole time!
S2E11, my beloved. That's the one that kicked the series into overdrive for me. I'm such a sucker for enemies-to-lovers and Nathaniel represented an absolutely vital component of the energy that sustained the show through its best episodes. Any "gifted" kid understands that their intellect was made to define a significant part of who they are as they form a personality in their youths, but S1-S2E8 Rebecca has no counterpart to help her work through that aspect of herself. Greg tries a bit, being more cerebral than most, but he's so wrapped up in his missed opportunities that he never really breaks through. Nathaniel shows up in S2E9 and suddenly he's confounding Rebecca in ways that she's coasted on ever since she got to California. And within a couple episodes she reacts to that frustration exactly how she's shown you she'll react, and the internal and external conflict it engenders is just delicious food for us lucky viewers.
I typically hate finales. I really struggle with endings, but I really like the Crazy Ex-girlfriend finale. Mostly, because of what you said about it feeling not like an ending but another beginning. It's brilliant!
It's my personal headcanon that Josh is actually singing "I Gave You a UTI." My evidence: 1. he isn't wearing a costume, 2. Rachel isn't wearing a costume. 3. He's using wooden spoons instead of drum sticks and an actual microphone. 4. Josh seems like he would be elated to have that affect on her.
i watched these ranking videos like half a year ago? before actually watching the show because i was interested in the plot but not in watching a 4 season show. finally finished watching the show and immediately came back here and it's a very different experience the second time round (duh) so hi again!
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend meets the ultimate test of being an all-time great show: Even the "bad" episodes are not only not "bad," but actually better than the vast majority of other TV, as your commentary in your two terrific videos makes so clear! 👍🏻 Also, the character development is just so terrific throughout. There are no "villains" and no "saints;" everyone is a complex person just trying to deal with their stuff and grow along the way. Darryl's "Gettin' Bi," but all of them are gettin' by. 😉 I imagine it's no accident that the character who probably shows the least growth is WhiJo, because he was the character with his shit the most together from the beginning. He's the voice of sanity pretty much throughout... 🙂
Nathaniel is irrelevant was once of my favourites because it came out right after i had my youngest son and i got to laugh so hard thatbi peed a little and it was the first time i laughed about his very traumatic and life threatening birth. Such a great show.
I saw After Everything You Made Me Do (Reprise) and a few other songs before watching the actual series. Piecing together what I could from the songs I did watch, I assumed that this song happened during the actual wedding for Rebecca and Josh. As I watched the show in order and it got closer and closer to their wedding I was expecting this song to happen - only for it to never actually appear. It's funny and genius how misleading the song is if you don't have the whole context.
The episode with Stuck in the Bathroom came out about 2 months before R Kelly’s disgusting crimes became public knowledge. It’s one of those horrible little coincidences 😭
16:02 I don't. Valencia is probably my least favourite character of the show, and definitely my least favourite from the main cast. To be completely honest, I don't get why anyone would be in the same room as her, she doesn't seem to have one nice bone in her body, and her being part of the main girl group feels unearned, incomprehensible and makes those parts weaker than they had any right to be. Even with her own romantic subplot with a character that almost only interacts with her, they made managed to make me hope that she would leave Valencia because of how bad of a partner she was being. But, she does have her moments, "Women gotta stick together" is an amazing song, and her song about her movement was funny, even if the subplot overall was annoying.
I'm astonished that I never want to see Josh again is so low honestly. Idk I guess that's just how good cxg is that this episode is right in the middle? (also. Did anyone else genuinely not think that Naomi would find that on her laptop?? I really thought she was just sad Facebook stalking Paula so that blew my actual mind) Also idk if you'd ever want to take on that monster task but what about ranking the songs? Curious how alike to the episodes ranking it would be!
It would be higher, maybe, if I could stomach watching it again, but I just find that episode SO hard to get through and, as the title says... I never want to see (this episode) again :P I would rank the songs but I believe there's already a ranking video on RUclips!
@20:00 It's interesting that you say You Ruined Everything isn't funny. I find it funny. Mostly because, that's basically what it sounds like in my head, pretty much all of the time. I guess you're not supposed to find it quite that relatable.
I love White Josh. He is like, so done with the shenanigans from moment 1, and keeps calling out the craziness and the nonsense but still feeling like a real person.
White Josh is the best!
I think I'd like him to have been a little more messed up, everyone else is pretty messed up, but it's not as bad ss Jim and that's something
i had no idea I needed Audra Lavine closure until i got it
Right? Her last scenes are soooo good
I think the most amazing thing about the finale is that after four seasons of understanding the songs as just emotions filtered through the format of musicals and then we start to understand them as the way that Rebecca processes things when she dissociates, it adds a third layer of interpretation and allows the series to exist as a loop where you can view the entire thing as the music and dramatised stories as written by Rebecca. It's truly brilliant and it really added a new layer of depth to the entire series upon rewatch.
The show really does go in a loop de loop where it ends at the start and it starts at the end!
I got emotional at that part of the video.
Hearing you talk about the finale has me tearing up all over again. The first time I watched it I could hardly believe how well they'd stuck the landing. It's truly the gold standard of TV finales.
Right?! Like, it could have gone so badly... but it went so perfectly!!

He's the voice of sanity pretty much throughout... 🙂
Thank you for this comment (and your appreciation of WhiJo, which of course I agree with!)
It’s one of those horrible little coincidences 😭
oof
41:30 😭😭 I'M DYING !!!!!
:P
the songs that are a lot more rachel bloomy, like feeling kinda naughty, make me so happy as a “please love me” fan
yess agreed!
Ahaha, I mostly meant who doesn't love the line in the song "the sexy one, czar of torture" but I also see your point!
In 33:25 favorite song
Audra x Rebecca is endgame
I'm astonished that I never want to see Josh again is so low honestly.
Idk I guess that's just how good cxg is that this episode is right in the middle?
(also. Did anyone else genuinely not think that Naomi would find that on her laptop?? I really thought she was just sad Facebook stalking Paula so that blew my actual mind)
Also idk if you'd ever want to take on that monster task but what about ranking the songs? Curious how alike to the episodes ranking it would be!
It would be higher, maybe, if I could stomach watching it again, but I just find that episode SO hard to get through and, as the title says... I never want to see (this episode) again :P
I would rank the songs but I believe there's already a ranking video on RUclips!
@@KelseyHontz oh yeah that tracks. It's really rough
Also you talking about the final episode made me tear up :'). I need to rewatch this show
@20:00 It's interesting that you say You Ruined Everything isn't funny. I find it funny. Mostly because, that's basically what it sounds like in my head, pretty much all of the time. I guess you're not supposed to find it quite that relatable.
someone commented once "we're not meant to find Rebecca quirky and relatable" and I was like... don't call me out like this lol
"the real dream is feeling like you deserve to have a dream in the first place" wtf you got me greetin watching this? rude
20:15 We're not meant to find this song funny and relatable oops all berries
Definitely not funny, 100% relatable!
Just heard that coco Lee committed suicide :( same day as watching this video, weird coincidence
:(
41:30 oMG
Ok, ima let you finish, but the Santa Ana Winds episode was the greatest OF ALL TIME
Not the greatest but still pretty good 😁
Settle for me!
💕💕
nbd, but tagalog is pronounced 'tuh-gall-ug'!
Dang, I thought I googled how to pronounce it correctly! Thank you!
I just don't like the trent episodes.
Ah, dang! I kinda liked that weird guy
