    Unlike bigger brands that create a product to fit a specific price range, BDH did whatever it took to create the ultimate Sim Racing H-Pattern Shifter with a realistic feel. It turns out that “whatever it takes” costs about US$1200! So the BDH H1 H-Pattern shifter must be one of the most realistic Sim Racing shifters available, right?!
    On Paper the BDH H1 “Bazooka” does not have a big feature set, it can not be switched to sequential mode like many other cheaper shifters, and its mounting options are a little complex. So we took a detailed look at the BDH H1 to find out just how immersive an experience it can give, and exactly what the impact of its limitations are to help you decide if this boutique shifter is worthy of a place on your sim rig.

    This is a lovely piece of gear and as much a piece of machined art as anything else. I’m really glad that Dave and Billy have been successful enough selling them that they have had to increase production past what they can do themselves. Especially because I can’t afford to support them by buying one myself. At least they don’t need me to!

  • @oktanedesigns

    Great comprehensive review. Thanks for clearing up some of the misrepresentation this thing got from others. The knob is made from Nylon, and you can choose between black or white (not that it makes much difference to the end user). I prefer a shifter with no lockouts because I find them cumbersome, and may restrict some of the flexibility that comes from having those extra gears available for various sims. I've never found myself accidentally shifting into 7th or reverse with this thing mounted up in the correct orientation.
    Some people in the comments complaining about the inclusion of plastic components on the internals. Sometimes it doesn't make sense to use metal, and nylon, plastic, etc aren't going to be subject to the same amount of wear from constant abrasion like an all-metal mechanism would. It's not about cost either, it's about making the right choice for a given application.

    • @kontoname
      @kontoname 5 месяцев назад

      Nice to see you over here as well :D
      But while it certainly can make sense to implement plastics it doesn't look like much thought was given into this for the product. It's just a very stark contrast.
      Usually an industrial engineer would look at this and optimize. But then it raises the question why they use plastics AND such thick wasteful housings etc.
      Just look at the wall thickness of that clamp alone... it's like they have a hydraulic cylinder they want to fit to a rig.
      So from an industrial engineering standpoint this thing isn't optimized at all.
      Just the housing on the front end for the electronics board is thicker than some hydraulic pedal lever arms.
      I believe that nobody has given much thought about these optimizations in reality. It was just done because they are used to doing things that way. And because they price asked for it pays for the strange mix and decision making, so it's not a loss (for them).
      That said with products like these it at least leaves enough room for optimization and drives the market and it's companies to improve products (while actually making them efficient to build). That way as simmers we all benefit from a better landscape with quality products.

    • @bobradar
      @bobradar 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@kontoname Things aren't always so straightforward, and if you have all the mechanical engineering expertise behind a product, you end up with something that's going to be that much more expensive to manufacture. In terms of the housing thickness, you have to keep in mind that while it may seem over-built, there is never going to be any amount of flex coming from the shifter itself. When you're working with bar stock, it's not necessarily wasteful to have the extra material, and takes less cutting and production of scrap shavings that have to go back in for recycling. Nylon (and ABS) isn't junk, and makes sense to use especially for those gates because they require no lubrication. Metal-on-metal is a pain to maintain in certain areas of a mechanism, and will introduce squeaking and unnecessary wear and tear. The size of the switch assembly is simply due to the way the micro switches have to be mounted for this mechanism. The unit may seem large, but it's actually quite compact in person, and I personally absolutely love the aesthetic of the H-1, even more than their new sequential combo. Anyway, I don't disagree that things could be more optimized, but that goes with anything. It takes time and some trial and error to fully optimize, but it might not make sense for them financially either. They have to strike a balance. I think they've delivered an exceptional product.

    I went with the SimVertex shifter. I came from a Fanatec SQ 1.5 and wanted to have a nice upgrade at about twice the price. When it arrived I noticed a definite improvement over the Fanatec, like not even comparable, but it also reminded me, that a shifter is a 1 second feedback-experience. Unlike your FFB system, or pedals, or motion, or anything else on the rig. It's like a button press on a buttonbox, where sure you want it to feel nice and tactile, but the difference between an already good button, and the best button at 4 times the price, especially at 1000+ coins, is negligible and makes it almost impossible to justify.

      I agree with your sentiment on how much you use it, but if some people want the most authentic sim experience, this is still way cheaper than even a set of track tires for a real car. Especially if you're someone like me and you use your sim rig to actually practice lap times at a local track, accurate sim parts goes a long way.

Look up a escort cosworth 7 speed or a dog box on the m3 from the late 80s normally 1st would be down where 2nd is there was no pull up to get into the 7th or 6th. One thing I like about SHH shifters is the lack of lockouts. I use dog leg style so that 6th gear is usable. No doubt the Simagic shifter is amazing quality for the price (I do have to adjust from full tension in H pattern and lessen it for Sequential but not a deal breaker), but I would like a feature where I can customize the lockouts so I can have dog leg with lockout reverse and no lockout for 6th (7th) gear. Space is an issue, but I like the longer throws and taller profiles of the Fanatec and Simagic over the low and short profile of the SHH along with the better positioning of the USB ports being on the rear rather on the side for the SHH.

    I love that you mention that lash/movement between gears providing a realistic feel... i've been triggered so many times by players using the fanatec shifter, moaning that there's too much play, really shows they are not familiar with real manual shifters at all, mind you, i'm not saying it's accurate, just saying it does kinda add a touch of realism for me, the worst offender on the fanatec model is the flop from left to right, front to back does actually feel like some of the cars i've driven IRL.

    Mounting the shifter in the "backwards" (shaft towards front) orientation works best for trucking sims too as the lockout gears would be asigned to Reverse and granny(low creeper gear) that only get used for specific cases (ie pulling away on a steep grade. I'd love to have one of these! Combine it with a shifter extension it looks perfect.

    I was deadset on getting the BDH shifter once I found out about it a few years back, but never got in to one of the pre-orders, as one knows, economics isn't always on your side of things.
    But as the time went on, the price on this unit has just increased and increased to a place where it's just as dumb to get a Pro Sim H-shifter, which is out of my league for a shifter anyways.
    I settled with the Simagic H/Seq shifter, and actually haven't had the need to upgrade further, it gives me exactly what I need in terms of funcionality and reliability.

      I've had a ProSim for ages and I can't imagine a shifter feeling better, but it is expensive and more bulky than the BDH. And since the new BDH is a dual mode that is supposed to have a decent sequential feel as well as H pattern in one package, that definitely pushes in it's favor. FYI this new shifter replaces the one reviewed here.
      I will have to say that given Quaife Engineering builds the ProSim and they build racing transmissions there is at least pedigree. One thing I did immediately was install a very nice SS shift knob which added more weight to it. But I'm sure pedigree means little to most people. I've also been on the waiting list for the hydraulic lockout for a number of years. I'm still hoping they release it one day.

    • @oliverdurgen5953
      @oliverdurgen5953 3 месяца назад

      that slack is there for a reason and it isn't to keep the gears from grinding, as the guy in the video suggested, although he wasn't far off.
      it's to keep the synchros from spinning up when they aren't supposed to, so they don't get hot and wear out prematurely. it's basically because people have a bad habit of resting their hand on the shifter in between shifting (i.e. all the time).
      If there wasn't any play built into it, just resting your hand on the shifter could engage the synchros, and for much longer intervals than they are designed for, thermally speaking. So, it's basically a buffer for an extremely common, albeit bad driving habit.

Can't trust any of his reviews anymore. It's hard to find honest channels who are not sell outs in this industry. With Boosted Media here it's just a bit different. He doesn't literally say what he really thinks if he dislikes a product, but he beats just enough around the bush that you get the gist of what he wants to communicate...that is as long as there is no obvious flaw like a missing button or something like that...

    Im surprised its taken this long to get this reviewed or even the still missing Pro-Sim H Pattern given some of the high end products you've reviewed over the years. Now the Bash Pro Active H-Shifter from MVH is out and really pushing tech around shifting options for sim racing. Think this warrants a 'shift off' at the top end of the options, as those 3 are the most expensive available.

      The small batch manufacturers who bild high end products usually don't need to gift away their products to every single youtuber out there to get "free" advertisement,...and that's basically what it takes, especially with the more popular channels. A youtube review is basically like a contract, even though the youtubers don't like to admit it. They get some sort of compensation (usually a product and/or money) and in exchange they agree to advertise the product and to keep the criticism at a minimum.

The Pro Sim H pattern shifter has already been reviewed and praised to high heaven, by the most reputable and in depth sim racing channel out there. People who are in the market for such a high end product, usually know about the quality of those, and (again) small batch manufacturers like Quaife and BDH usually don't need to give away free samples to main stream sim racing channels to get advertisement for a niche product, if they don't have trouble selling them as it is....not only because there are reviews out there for people who look for something like that and are willing to search for a minute, but also because the shifter is almost always out of stock (...and if it's in stock it's usually over msrp) It seems like BDH (up until now couldn't keep up with the demand). They just got a new batch out and this is why I finally had the chance to order one. No, it hasn't gone up in price.
      It's not plastic, as in the stuff you make toys with, or 3d printed plastic like the Bash Pro is full of. It's Nylon 6 to the best of my knowledge, a recommended industrial heavy duty bearing and impact resistant "plastic" as use for cam chain tensioner and guides inside high performance race and road engines. Will should also have pointed out that the nylon is only a cover over a high tensile steel bolt. It will last a lifetime in this application.

If it was a cheap ABS plastic cap, that could also be a fine choice as long as it is well tested and analyzed.
