@@iximusic i generally read the lyrics. before i read that one i thought he said ful stop again with some other words, learning the actual lyric was really impactful for me. it's become my third favorite radiohead song, i listened it so many times but still i enjoy it
more radiohead examples off the top of my head: 1) sail to the moon is a BEAUTIFUL Imaj7-bVImaj7 (Amaj7-Fmaj7) 2) how to disappear completely is mostly i-bVI, and then when it switches to the bVII near the end of the song... OOOFFFF one of the most amazing resolutions of all time
A Moon Shaped Pool is one of Radiohead's underrated albums. When you first hear it, you think it's meh or just ok. Then, the album keeps getting better every time you listen to it.
I remember listening to The King Of Limbs once and I don't think I listened to it a second time. I think Lotus Flower stuck out to me and I added it to a playlist. I should give it another try.
Great to see Aphex Twin featured here! He's actually been a huge influence on artists like NIN, Bjork and Radiohead (their whole sonic change from Kid A onwards was greatly inspired by his work). I loved this video and how passionately you talk about music!
"Criminal" by Fiona Apple has a couple of ♭VIs in the pre-chorus progression: I ♭VII ♭VI⁷ V IV⁷ ♭VI⁷. I've even seen that first ♭VI⁷ cited as an example of a German augmented sixth in pop music (I'm not entirely convinced that's true, even though it is followed by V, because that's followed by IV⁷, which resolves to...♭VI⁷ again? Plagal deceptive cadence, is that a thing?)
At first I was, like isn't that a IV7 in C, but then I listened again and...ha sometimes songs like this, that go between the relative major and minor so freely, make me want to set Roman Numeral analysis aside, ya know? It's not always easy, or even useful, to try to perceive the "one true" tonal center when the vi and bIII are used in certain ways that really tonicize them, like A Warm Place by NIN, or even that Aphex Twin #3 example, which could just as accurately be analyzed in A major. Anyway. 😆 Great song, not surprised that first chord is a diminished chord. Now it makes sense why it always sounded so odd to me. I don't know about the German augmented sixth! hmmm Plagalceptive. It's a cadenception! 👀
Hunter by Have a Nice Life makes very effective use of the flat 6. The chords aren’t super busy but the lo-fi minimalist quality gives it a cold, wintery quality. Also listen to the song Alien Observer by Grouper if you get a chance-it’s very arpeggiated but there’s some stuff in there that sounds like use of a flat 6. It’s also one of the most beautiful songs I’ve ever heard.
One of my very favorite songs is Fiona Apple - I Know. The last line of vocals has a pregnant pause, a bVI, and she’s spent the whole song teaching you the next line and she won’t say it. One of the best unifications of form, function, and content frickin’ ever. I hope you check it out. (Elvis Costello loves it too, there’s an interview somewhere on RUclips before he covers it)
I'm so beautifully confused by the Rhubarb example. It doesn't feel like there's enough context to establish tonality and yet, I agree full well... we know exactly when we resolve to the Tonic and exactly which chord is the bVI. Such a beautiful, minimal, progression.
True. I agree it's somewhat ambiguous, and analyzing it in A major works just as well. But that bittersweet tension is felt either way. Thanks for the thoughtful comment :)
This chord is quite literally my favorite chord as well, so having you deep dive into its multifaceted interpretations is excessively addictive content to watch. I seriously love your videos.
My favourite is the 'unanswered question'. Although.. it truly was another experience hearing Knife Party as a solo piano piece.. wow. Thanks for all you do.
Even if you are a huuuge Radiohead fan, you really have to sit with their work from the last 15 years or so for a while before you get it! It's amazing. So much more going on than it seems. Love Moon Shaped Pool
Great songs with copious flat 6 chords... Silverchair - Tuna in the Brine The Dissociatives - Horror with Eyeballs & the gorgeous closer track Sleep Well Tonight. Daniel Johns might love the b6 as much as you...those are just three examples among many of his songs. Lastly, I don't know for a fact but it sure feels like Sigur Ros uses them a lot. The emotional worlds they construct through harmony tears my heart open like nothing else.
I was surprised you left out the obvious bVI chord in "Change" by Deftones. The chorus switches between the the bVI and i chords. "How to Disappear Completely" by Radiohead also vamps on a bVI-i progression for a good while. I'm loving this series even though I don't need to be sold on how awesome bVI chords are!
You should definitely check out some songs by the band Warpaint. They use the tonic and bVI progression a lot, in many interesting ways. I’d say they’re the band that made me fall in love with the bVI chord, back when I found their music in my teens. Some examples of their tunes with bVI would be “Stars,” “Burgundy” and “Majesty.” Loved your Björk analysis of All is Full of Love btw - my fave song of all time!
Fabulous Ixi, I know why this is your favourite chord: because you're a sadistic Goddess who loves to put her subordinates into difficult situations. It's not that bad as it sounds, it really shows that you're highly intelligent. Remember when you were talking about deliberate removal of gratification? You are so similar to Trent. Your intellect is just so sophisticated. Thank you for sharing. You are a true joy to watch and listen to! Edit: i forgot to mention an example you asked for. Black Sabbath: children of the grave. Totally feeling what you’re saying, but am just too underdeveloped to follow. Grasping some of it, but feels just out of reach. Will get there hopefully and if you have tips, please let me know. Your knowledge obviously gives another level of love for the music and I’m jealous of it
I think, i just think, cuz i really don't know that much of music theory, that Twist by Thom Yorke has the bVI, at the second part of the song when the piano comes in... It's a bold supposition but if the chord is there that would make so much sense as of why this is my favorite song on that album
@@iximusic ahhh i'm so excited with the knowledge of the existence of this chord, literally searching in my mind everytime i've heard it before. Thank you thank you thank you so much. I think Battleship Hill of PJ Harvey uses it as well if you wanna add into the collection
Since I was like 4 I loved this note, and the music that came with it, and I think October by U2 has the flat 6 and I think Daydreaming by Radiohead, but I might be wrong.
Totally love your videos! Being a guitarist primarily, I think of the b6 chord as the IV (based on the major scale of course). I like to describe it as “the saddest major chord in a key”. Definitely carries a ton of emotional weight! Introduce those color tones (maj7ths, 9ths and b5ths or even 6ths!)and you’re squarely in beautiful Lydian Land! Thanks again for the rad content! 🥇
deftones have so many excellent examples of i-bVI chord progressions! off the top of my head: 1) digital bath main riff 2) change (in the house of flies) chorus 3) the "i think god is moving its tongue" section of my own summer which also features the naturally occuring tritone of the bVI on top of the chord
I think I've got one but it's super ambiguous maybe. Mainly because I don't really know this stuff all that well but anyway. Merchandise by Fugazi. The song might be in E minor (it's complicated because it sort of rests on G at the start and it throws in a G# passing note in the main riff). But if it is in Em, it does throw in a C chord. Well it's more of a power chord (no third). The chorus then seems to push it all up to F# minor. And throws in a D chord. The vocals are punky enough that they don't entirely confirm the key either way. Would love to get your thoughts on it. Also, I'm guessing a few songs by The Cure use a minor 6th chord, surely!
Hey Ixi! A chord change I've always loved is in the Muse song Map of the Problematiqe. If you skip to the end the part where Matt sings "loneliness be over" a few times 🙏
"will you smile again for me" by ...and you will know us by the trail of death also has very cool progressions including a flat6 in the intro/outro - pretty sure you'll love that song overall
Even though I'm not a big fan of the music you analyze, I really enjoy your passion and energy for the music. As a piano tinkerer it's great to watch. Thanks for sharing!
You provided me with a new perspective on Knife Party. For some reason I always heard the Eb in my head as being major and being the (I) chord, with the “knife/see” note as being a #4 Lydian sound. Going back to it I hear the Gm being (i) now. Very cool.
You can do it Michael. 🎹 I really hope you do! I have piano tutorials on my Patreon, and shorter ones of parts of NIN songs here: ruclips.net/p/PLn_Xar3I0ZoDX-oTS00BzgAouxOy-hbJO

Thanks for that last part. Check out avril 14 by aphex twin, possibly the most beautiful song I have heard. In contrast to Richard's other songs its astonishing his range.
Nice instruction that intrigues me as a guitarist who composes a lot for my channel so I love theory & so knowing your approach and style for giving it in a straight forward way while giving enticing musical examples is sssweet!
Wish I could think of more examples because the bVI is also one of my absolute favourite chords... The only one I can think of now is Conjurer's Thankless. Generally quite a heavy band, but I love their approach to melody in that song especially and the strong emphasis on the bVI in places.
The 9th scale degree, or supertonic or 2nd degreeor whatever, is so common in pop music "melody". Like, every single line goes 2222222222231 and that's the melody. They all hang out there all the time. Then you cycle mostly diatonic chords underneath, and there has to be a flat6
Wow you identified all of my favorite songs with these two videos, and I had no idea they had anything in common! Kindred spirits, lover of the Flat VI. Thank you for bringing all of these together, subbed.
Sooo much YES through this entire in-depth explanation and exclamation of the bVI!! LOVE your taste in music also for all the wonderful examples. Especially appreciate your comprehension and clear explanation of the "why's" music makes us feel certain ways, especially on the bVI! So inspired, so bless. Much gratitude for sharing
U2's "Where The Streets Have No Name" has it (would love a song analysis from them, any song really but WTSHNN really throws you around a lot, very dynamic).
Oh, I love that song, and that whole album! It was a family favorite growing up. The guitar technique in that song was a game changer, that intro alone is perfection, and the ending too. ♥️ I think the chord you might be hearing is a bVII, which is another favorite of mine! Like when he sings "where the streets have no name" in the verse right before the chorus. It's so dramatic!
I went through my playlist for some more examples and I found a few. Alien Shivers by VOLA, Birth by Ghost Brigade, Total Invasion by Killing Joke (the chorus), Shout by Tears for Fears, and Christploitation by Fear Factory. Just to name a few lol
I'd love to see you do some Deftones videos! I think they always got unfairly lumped in with the nu-metal movement despite their music being very different from the typical aspects of the genre. Their "rapping" was mostly Chino's shout-singing style, and they didn't really do all the angst and extreme downtuning that so many of those bands did. Their single that fit most into nu-metal was mandated by the label, and they didn't even want it on an album.
I will be analyzing Deftones! One of my favorites of all time. I'm very interested to learn more about their influences because their sense of harmony, like NIN, has always interested me. It's a bit unusual. A lot of jazz chords in their music, which I wouldn't necessarily expect. And there's a way that Chino sings sometimes where he kind of sounds like a jazz vocalist, or a lounge singer or something. Also Abe Cunningham is one of my favorite drummers. :D
@@iximusic so I've read that Chinos biggest influence is Robert Smith of the Cure. Regardless if it is true, all I hear now when I listen to some Deftones song is "distorted Cure". I love both bands so I dig it!
And just poppin in w/ a few more ^_^ "Televators" by The Mars Volta "Airport Song" by Guster "Agostina" by Puscifer ( All Bm -> i bVII bVI ) Though... I might be wrong w/ the guster + incubus & umphrey's from the last post~ they're keeping a lot of notes from the tonic (or just sustaining the tonic) and just moving down to/adding the 6th scale degree - so is that the same? Or are those effectively making (gosh, I don't know the notation...) bVImaj⁷ ? Does it still count? Lol - and am I naming that properly? Thanks for making the content that you do!
I never heard that Bjork song because I'm kind of out of the loop as far as Bjork goes, but it turns out I did hear that song, because Death Cab covered it. I love all of these songs. It took me a minute to watch part 2 of this, but I'm glad I watched it now. I'm sold on the bVI even though I don't understand it. Oooo! A new song! "Little Dragon" I haven't heard that one... but now I'm really pumped to hear it! I think I'm pretty confident that if you say a song is good then I know I'll like it by now. More ooooo! "'How to find the bVI'"... and actually I knew how to do it, I was confused about the Minor scale. Like how would you do a b6 in Cm for example? Or would you use D# Major? So it would be a Bb6? It's so confusing learning things by yourself. You think you're learning something correctly, but then you're just learning something through your own lens. So maybe sometimes it makes sense to you, but then you just confuse anyone you want to express an idea to. :( I love your passion for music and your taste in music and I always enjoy the mental exercise and the inspiration to learn/understand a little bit more about music when I watch your breakdowns. Thanks ixi!
Thanks friend! In C minor the b6 note is Ab. The scale goes C D Eb F G Ab Bb C. The bVI chord is Ab C Eb. It's always a major chord. But you can also just put the b6 note in the bass without using the whole chord. Count 4 half steps (a major 3rd) down from the note your song's key is in. It's easier to go down from that note than to count all the way up to the b6 because it's closer from the other direction. Honestly it's tough learning about music in text. It's all about hearing it and doing it. Would you ever be interested in some lessons? :)
@@everennui1 For sure! :) Shoot me an email sometime and I'll send you more info about lessons and whatnot. I have a waiting list at the moment but it's not terribly long. lessons@iximusic.com
Hmmm now there's a challenge. Although I was classically trained on guitar using the piano to understand the scales and their interrelatednessnessness.... I dropped it ... but you are inspiring me! So I thank you... Right.. How about Tori Amos' Bells for Her, from her Under The Pink album. I might be wrong... but I don't care, it's a gorgeous song from a gorgeous album. ;P
Opeth's Bleak. The whole song kinda revolves arround phrygian dominant and harmonic minor. Later, after the second chorus, Mikael hits a transitional riff to Bm and then he hits a Gmaj7 with some more transitional diads back into Bm. You'll know it when you hear "Devious movements in your eyes". Great song and a lot of bVI's. Heavy but entremely recommended.

Soundgarden's "Tighter and tighter" is fantastic, uses mostly the same riff traveling to V during the verse, but instead to bVI for the chorus.
You just reminded me think of Fell On Black Days...i-v-bVI right? Yummy. Added Tighter and Tighter to my current playlist, thanks!
Oh, all examples so beautiful! I'm excited and inspired to do smth just right now!
👏
Sooo much YES through this entire in-depth explanation and exclamation of the bVI!! LOVE your taste in music also for all the wonderful examples. Especially appreciate your comprehension and clear explanation of the "why's" music makes us feel certain ways, especially on the bVI! So inspired, so bless. Much gratitude for sharing
And last one before bed:
"Limb by Limb" by Phish
That one's bVI bVII I vs my other examples all w/ the minor i
Thank you for all the bVI examples! And the shout out today on Geebz live chat - didn't want to pull focus but I saw :)
I think the chord you might be hearing is a bVII, which is another favorite of mine!
And just poppin in w/ a few more ^_^
"Televators" by The Mars Volta
"Airport Song" by Guster
"Agostina" by Puscifer
( All Bm -> i bVII bVI )
Though...
@@iximusic Yes! 100% As long as you're patient. haha.
@@everennui1 For sure! :) Shoot me an email sometime and I'll send you more info about lessons and whatnot. I have a waiting list at the moment but it's not terribly long. lessons@iximusic.com
This was very well explained and also enjoyable to watch. Thanks again!
I might be wrong... but I don't care, it's a gorgeous song from a gorgeous album. ;P
surprised to see so many favourite songs there! please continue to make these videos this is so inspiring 🙌
From NIN through Aphex Twin with some Radiohead and Deftones for good measure. Boat well and truly floated ❤️
A great example you missed out is The Kill by 30 Seconds To Mars.
Haven't heard it, I'll check it out, thank you!
I'm up to Radiohead and you keep picking all the best songs. Omg I love your voice
I got so excited with the choices I love your channel great insights
Absolutely love the song Twice. And Reckoner. And All is Full of Love. Great song choices 🙏
Added to my current playlist, thank you!
Great video Ixi, the lyrics for Ful stop are actually "The truth will mess you up". Such a great song!
Thanks!
Love your work!
