I absolutely loved Look Back. I wish that more people would realize that there are amazing animated films this year, but you just have to look deeper to find them.
Adam was straight up wrong on several occasions. "Creatively bankrupt" shots? The hall chase? The top to bottom shot in the ship setting sail sequence, John Silver's cyborg perspective shots, THE ENTIRE SKY SURFING SEQUENCE in the beginning???? He was straight up talking nonsense because he came into this film not wanting to like it and for once Alex didn't take it.
@@dalemarinez5837couldn’t agree more. Another notable shot was also one of the shots right at the end of the prologue sequence. Young Jim’s head comes into the background of the shot at the apex of the battle and it’s revealed that he’s being read a holographic storybook. Adam was waaaay off the mark and is frankly just being pessimistically critical because he went into watching the film with a forgone conclusion that he’d hate it
I have so much love for Look Back because it never told me how to feel. The emotions didn’t fully hit me until the credits when I kept thinking about what I took away from the movie. I also really liked how the animation mirrored the narrative. The backgrounds were super detailed while the characters were drawn a little rougher.
Interesting bit about the main characters of Fujino and Kyomoto. They, together, are ostensibly representations of the author, Tatsuki FujiMoto. Kyomoto does awesome backgrounds, and Fujino is better at drawing characters, but still they are a little rough, just like Fujimoto's approach to manga. It is maybe the most authentic animated recreation of a manga author's written art I have seen in YEARS. Bonus fun fact! Just like Kyomoto, because of his shortcomings, Fujimoto himself wanted to push himself by going to art school.
Treasure Planet really made me appreciate the writings of Robert Louis Stevenson, as Long John Silver is probably the best written anti-hero / complex villian ever. But also how distinct every character is. Why treasure planet in particular made me realise it was watching and reading reviews of Treasure Planet, and reading comments about it. How they gush over the characterisation which they caulk down to Disney. When the characterisation is exactly the same although signifcantly weaker as the books, only Billy Bones is different. It made me re-read the book as an adult and as I was looking at through this lense I was amazed at how well written it was, how every person had a distinct voice no matter how insignificant the character. It really fleshed out the world.
i highly recommend you guys to read the one shot manga of Look Back it's pretty much the same as the movie but the paneling in some ways feel more cinematic than the film adaptation. I also highly recommend Goodbye Eri by the same author especially as fans of movies. The artist is great at taking turns that are unexpected but justified.
It's kinda sad how those two mangas are some of the best literature but he is more known for fire punch and chainsaw man. No hate on those two either, but eri and look back are on a different level
The oneshot is very good, but it's practically a storyboard for the movie. If you've watched the movie, you've basically read the manga. The shots are pretty much identical too, although obviously through animation the seem more smoother and dynamic. Unless you're particularly into seeing the manga art being drawn by an individual as opposed to the studio/collaborative nature of the animation, I'd argue it's not entirely necessary.
25:07 I would love to see Alex join the Oscar stream with Adam! I know that's a tough ask time difference wise but that would be incredible if they could make it happen (also maybe bring in a certain Ralph into the mix)!!!
Never in a million years would have expected a Tatsuki Fujimoto adaptation to be featured on fucking Sardonicast of all places. Speaks volumes about that guy’s work that two guys who have a very cynical view of that medium even connected with it.
Yeah, it's probably the most creative Disney adaption, as it's the only one that takes place in an alternate version of the original setting (other than Oliver and Company, I guess).
@eamk887 ok that's nice doesn't change the fact it is a good children's movie with plenty of darker story elements that parents can find interesting. And it's more than likely the parents where familiar With the source material of treasure island so that adds a layer of enjoyment too.
I’m living for adum’s disdain for treasure planet. He reacted to it exactly the way I did giving it a rewatch last year with some friends. and yet, simultaneously, Alex feels exactly how child me felt when I first watched it. It’s so neat seeing these two perspectives in conflict.
I am definitely with alex on this one. I enjoy treasure planet a lot and think there are many good things about it. I admit it is largely because of nostalgia and because of how much I enjoyed watching it in cinema as a kid but I would still say the film has it's merits
Watching Anora with an audience of 8 people at an indie cinema in the uk and there was more collective laughter then I have ever heard in any other mainstream cinema in the uk including full cinemas showing mainstream comedies
Guys I HIGHLY recommend reading the original one shot manga of look back and other Fujimoto works. His drawing styling is very cinematic because he’s inspired by film and it’s very interesting to see how it translates to screen
Adum should ease off on doing watchalongs for every single recommendation on this podcast. I feel like he’s making less mental notes, he debates and converses with his chat for 15% of the runtime, a lot of the time he feels like he’s doing it by obligation or just looks visibly in the wrong headspace which dulls how personally effective the medium of film is when you are alone formulating your own thoughts without an audience that expects you to talk about it after it’s over and grade it, when naturally you need to let your thoughts boil.
If he’s doing that for recommendations then that’s really bad. It’s one thing to do that with a movie on his own terms (and even that might not be a totally fair way to watch it), but if it’s something Alex recommended then he needs to take it more seriously. Does Alex stream Adam’s recs and play to the live chat?
If I'm distracting myself with chat on a completely different screen from the movie, it's because I'm not connecting with the movie; Not the other way around. I experience the exact same thing watching films in a movie theater. If I'm not connecting with it, then I start thinking of other things in my head. If I wasn't doing a watch-along for Treasure Planet, then I would have had a significantly worse experience with the film and the rating would likely be even lower. Yes, I was watching Treasure Planet out of obligation for the podcast. Watching it with an audience didn't influence whether or not that was the case. Please refrain from attempting to delegitimize my experience with a movie simply because you had a different experience. There are plenty of great films that I have no issue getting absorbed into. Treasure Planet is not one of them.
Or maybe this problem doesn't exist and Treasure Planet looks great at times but offers little else to chew on. Character designs and art aren't the whole picture for what a movie should be imo, much like a beautiful person with no personality is a bore
So glad you guys got to see Anora and loved it! In my top 5 of the year right now, it'll be stuck in my brain for a while I think. Time to check out the director's other work- I'd appreciate suggestions for where to start if anyone has them!

"Look Back" in English is actually a slightly important point, given that the comic strip referencing it actually translates to something closer to "look at your back" in japanese
Anora was supposed to be an experienced exotic dancer, who has had to maintain control of risky situations with unruly men. And yet after act 1 of the movie, she's lost all agency, and just tagging along with kidnappers who may do her harm at any moment. It was ridiculous, and not in a good way. While the story avoids a lot of anime-isms. Look Back is very much the work of Tatsuki Fujimoto. The character writing, the paneling, and the axe murderer were all very Fujimoto. I think Look Back is easily his best work. I still haven't watched the film but I'm in no rush. I didn't like Goodbye Eri, but he has other good manga and one shots.
Adam really nailed the issue with Treasure Planet's character designs. I really loved the environmental and mechanical designs in the film. Same thing with Atlantis, but that wasn't held back by ugly characters. Also really hoping Goodbye Eri gets a similar adaptation as Look Back.
