Just because a person has experienced racism against themselves does not make them the leading authority on race. She was writing in her role as an MP and that makes her responsible for anything she says or writes while in the role no matter how old, what gender or what colour they are . The fact still remains, she has insulted a great many people by her thoughtlessness either in sending the letter at all or in not having double checked the wording she finally sent given the lack of sensitivity it contained.

She essentially made the distinctions between members of the Jewish and Irish and Traveler communities PASSING in various stages of their lives so as not be be effected daily by customary and systematic racism. She didn't say "no Irish, Jewish, Traveler has ever experienced racism. She made the distinction that whatever discrimination/prejudice Irish people felt in America, they never were put in the back of the bus as a matter of law. @@Cherokee-q4b You cannot name a historical ignorant practice and somehow assume you are making a legitimate argument, people have for centuries simply accepted that if you are born to Jewish parents (or Christian or Muslim) then you are automatically that religion. That is core of the problem because thats quite pathetic and honestly stupid, religion has no affiliation to the body or mind other than that which we impose over the mind and body. Religion does not show up in genetics, it is an attachment that humans have attached, and so the sheer fact that you can choose to be or not to be something, means it cannot be compared to something you don't get a choice about.
I'm born to Muslim parents, both of which are not actual practicing Muslims, I am not a Muslim and I refuse to be identified as Muslim, I do not appreciate the backward mentality and regulations that come with Islam, and if I did I would totally understand why people judged me based on the contents of my religion that I have signed up to. I'm not saying that that would give people the right to discriminate against me, but it certainly gives them the right to have a pre-judgement on what type of person I am.
The fact that so many people choose to remain in a religion and identify as that religion even when they have no real affiliation to it other than birth inheritance, should not distort things, and people should begin actually deciding what they are, that way when people do judge someone for being a jew or a muslim or a sun god believer, they will judge them based on the contents of the religion they have signed up for, which is PERFECTLY fine.
The only reason it becomes unfair that someone is judged for being a Jew is the fact that millions of Jews are Jews by name and that is their problem, not everyone elses

There seems to be a competition over who has had it the worst which is stupid. I am Syrian and I can easily play that card, but i find it demeaning and cheap, Jews have been persecuted, thats not allowed anymore full stop, blacks were slaves thats not allowed anymore full stop. The political correctness of not being able to move beyond these historical events is shortsighted, we teach a black or jewish or Syrian child today that they must always identify as victims, no thank you, my daughters only learn about the tragedy of being Syrian in a historical context, they are not allowed to build hatred to the sons and daughters of those who committed crimes against us, and thats how things should be.
All this talk of reparations and ongoing guilt trips are a joke that should not be taken seriously, not the slightest.

She is right. It's incredibly disrespectful that white people are trying to tell a Black woman what racism is and isn't. If you have a white or light coloured skin you do not experience racism in the same ways as people who have dark coloured skin. I am from a Jewish background, and have white skin. I have experienced prejudice due to coming to Britain from a different country, but I have never experienced racism. I remember talking with a Black British woman about our experiences, saying that I have experienced prejudice the minute I open my mouth, and her response was that I should try experiencing racism the second people see me. That's what Diane Abbott meant. This is just part of Starmer's hunt to get rid of the Left from Labour by using trumped-up slurs against popular, long-serving MPs. He should have more courage and say what he really means instead of starting a media storm and then hiding.

      Jews are funny
On one hand Jews perpetuate the idea that whites are evil, can’t be victims of racism, control institutional power.
They claim when convenient to be “fellow whites” and only a different religion but otherwise “the same”
But as soon as you apply the same critical race theory to the Jews which push it saying Jews can’t be victims of racism, holocaust wasn’t racist it was just religious intolerance, they have institutional power they freak out and claim to be a victimised racial minority and not merely a religion and that the critical race theory rules don’t apply to them they are exempt.
      Funny

I agree with her but she could have worded it better.
Prejudice takes many forms, while racial prejudice is possible so is religious prejudice and cultural prejudice.
      She should have said:
All racism is prejudice but not all prejudice is racism.
As a white Irish Catholic raised mostly in Scotland, I can tell you that when I experienced abuse and stereotypes growing up because of my Irish name and Catholic background... It wasn't because I was a different race from the people doing the abusing. I didn't experience "racism" though the small minded people often had some abuse based on race they would direct at people with a different skin colour to their own... Different eye shape to their own... That was racism... That I have experienced, just a little, when living in Vietnam.

    Diane Abbott's letter
    _The Observer_
    23 April 2023
    Racism is black and white
Tomiwa Owolade claims that Irish, Jewish and Traveller people all suffer from “racism” (“Racism in Britain is not a black and white issue. It’s far more complicated”, Comment). They undoubtedly experience prejudice. This is similar to racism and the two words are often used as if they are interchangeable.
It is true that many types of white people with points of difference, such as redheads, can experience this prejudice. But they are not all their lives subject to racism. In pre-civil rights America, Irish people, Jewish people and Travellers were not required to sit at the back of the bus. In apartheid South Africa, these groups were allowed to vote. And at the height of slavery, there were no white-seeming people manacled on the slave ships.
