In Dolly’s version, she’s leaving because she wants to leave. Whitney is leaving due to forces beyond her control and is conveying a message that she wishes she could stay. Whitney Houston was a MASTERFUL interpreter of lyrics and I’m sick of people reducing her to “anthems” and powerful singing.
