Matt-Thanks for the great list of suggestions for holiday viewing. All the best to you on what is undoubtedly a difficult time of the year. Btw, you have got a kick-ass Christmas tree!
Like retro music, old films have a comforting way of bringing back great memories. As always, I enjoyed your video very much, Matt. Thank you! May this holiday season provide you with healing and peaceful memories, Mary
Thank you so much Matt for this lovely Holiday episode … you always make everything you do on “Pop Goes” very special … cheers to you … Merry Christmas… and PS …Love your tree! 🎄🌟🎶 🎁
I just got Remember the Night and Holiday Affair delivered today! I've been really getting into older classics the last couple years, especially noir. I had never seen It's a Wonderful Life before last year. I wasn't impressed at first, but then my latest classic crush, Gloria Grahame, walked by in her nice dress and I was hooked. Merry Christmas!
Great selections! So glad you included "Remember the Night" and "It Happened On Fifth Avenue". And Sims' Christmas Carol is by far the best version. A more recent one you should see is a made for TV movie called "Silent Night Lonely Night" with Lloyd Bridges and Shirley Jones.
The Apartment, classic, Robert Mitchum is a favourite and the spooky Night of the Hunter one of his best. A great selection Matt - season's greetings at this special time, with peace and love.
Great video, Matt. Thank you! I was waiting for Night of the Hunter and I didn’t know if you would have that on your list. Incredible film ! And ends so beautifully on Christmas morning. I’m going to check out several on your list that I haven’t seen.
Glad to see you keeping busy and hanging with Bogie! Your Moon Zappa interview was excellent, and now this! I love the fact that no NEWER Christmas movies were included, only the classics! Honestly every Christmas movie after the early 90s or so, pretty much sucks, to be blunt….yeah even “Elf”!!! Ha ha! Cheers Matt! ⛄️🎸🎼❤️🎶❄️🎵🍻
Hi, Matt: I have been watching Remember The Night every Christmas for a few years now. My favourite part is her moment of realization as to what a good family is like when they are singing The End Of A Perfect Day. I was never crazy about Barbara but she is beautiful in this movie. One I didn't see you mention is The Miracle Of Morgan's Creek which is fun to watch at Christmas. I agree, Night Of The Hunter is one bizarre movie. My favourite part is the artistic scene when the children are floating down the river and the girl is singing. The Alastair Sim version of A Christmas Carol is the best. If you want to have a blast, watch Rich Little's A Christmas Carol comedy. Thank you for all the suggestions.
Great collection of Christmas theme movies lots of favorites in your collection you have a nice variety! Like your Christmas tree looks pretty in white! Glad to see you putting out new videos! Have a Merry Christmas and holidays! Enjoyed your show!
There's something about old Christmas movies that are endearing to celebrate the holiday season. Perhaps a touch of innocence from the innocent age to remind us there was a time before technology removed part of the human experience.
My favorites are: “The Bishop’s Wife”, “Come to the Stable”, “Holiday”, “Shop Around the Corner”, “It Happened on 5th Avenue”… “The Thin Man”, and “Our Man Godfrey”
Just discovered "Remember the Night" this year. Knew nothing about and really enjoyed it. I like the non-Hollywood ending. It affirms the depth of the relationship in a unique way. Beulah Bondi is the greatest. Have a Merry Christmas.
Hey Matt, great list, some of my favs in there, & ones I’d like to see too! Hope you’re doing well. If it’s any consolation, your great content provided a welcome distraction from a difficult time personally, not long ago. Safe to say you’ve got a lot of support here. On a lighter note, I’ll be using that Tom and Jerry recipe of yours again this year.🎄🥃
Thanks for this great little video on these great Christmas Movies. Its amazing that you did this now and it must have been very hard but maybe a little therapeutic as well. This is my first Christmas without my sister since she passed this summer. My God bless you during this difficult time. My heart goes out to you brother!
I enjoyed seeing this collection of Christmas movies. I've seen most on TV back in the 1960s & '70s when TV was showing everything that was "old" but not yet considered a classic as we view them now. I remember seeing the movie White Christmas when it was first released in theaters. I was about 7 or 8 at the time. Yeah, I'm old. 🙄😁 Thanks for what you do even in difficult times. Have a happier New Year Matt. Keep on with "Pop Goes The 60s."👍 (I was shocked to see the wooden red solder hanging on the tree. That is identical to the one my son received for his first Christmas. He passed away at the age of 5 in 1977 and it hung on our Christmas tree until my former spouse left in 2012. I believe she still has it but that brought back fond memories.)
I stopped by to recommend some slightly under-the-radar personal favorites -- and you got 'em! "Holiday" (the 1938 gem that taught me everything I know about work and money), "Remember the Night" (Babs and Fred -- the "Double Indemnity" pair, four years before the gal in the ankle bracelet slinked down those stairs) and "Christmas in Connecticut" (Babs again -- with Dennis Morgan and Sydney Greenstreet)... Thanks for sharing the warmth!
@@popgoesthe60s52 You are one very special man, Matt. How my heart longs for your spirit to be peaceful & full. Words fail my sentiment to you. Hope this channel gives you the comfort & joy you deserve & share so generously with us. 🎄✨🌠💝🌲🌋🔥🌈☄️🌟
I almost forgot a British Christmas movie from 1954, "The Crowded Day", a character study of several employees of a department store during the Holidays. Others here have already mentioned "The Holly and the Ivy" (1952) with Ralph Richardson and Celia Johnson, and "Cash on Demand" (1961) with Peter Cushing.
The Bishop’s Wife, The Miracle on 34th Street(the original), Holiday Affair and A Christmas Carol with Alistair Sim are my favorites too! God Bless you Matt!
Beautiful Christmas tree! I love Christmas movies, always on the search for some obscure treasure. I recently watched a black & white foreign Christmas short on HBO-Max called A Christmas Dream, it was delightful.
Great choices! Most of these I hadn’t seen and need to see. “Holiday Inn” is a yearly staple. (Barring the Lincoln’s Birthday section😂) And White Christmas is also high in the yearly list. Thanks again for the great content! Merry Christmas Matt🎄🎄🎄
Some thoughts: "It's A Wonderful Life" is my favorite Christmas film. And I'm old enough to have seen it before it got trendy, so I'm not just jumping on the bandwagon. The only film that could really compete with it would be the 1951 "Scrooge" (released in the US as "A Christmas Carol"). It's a head-scratcher for me how most of the Internet seems to favor the 1938 MGM version, which I enjoy just fine - but the Alastair Sim version is virtually flawless. "The Night Of The Hunter" is my favorite film of 1955, but I never think of it as a Christmas film, since so little of it takes place at that time. I loved "The Apartment" when I saw it many moons ago, but completely forgot that it takes place during the Christmas season. I'm also a fan of "Miracle On 34th Street" and "The Bishop's Wife." Speaking of the latter film, the little girl is the same that played Zuzu in "It's A Wonderful Life," so in consecutive years, she appeared in classic Christmas films featuring angels that walk among people.
Nice one, Matt, old movies are the best, especially Alastair Sim version of *A Christmas Carol* . An old British ghost story Christmas tradition harks back at least as far as Dickens, & then M. R. James continued the tradition with ghostly short stories told at Cambridge. *BBC Ghost Stories For Christmas* was a 1970s annual TV tradition that dramatised one spooky story for Christmas, usually M. R. James but also in 1975 Dickens's *The Signalman* . Run-time was about 40 mins but powerful atmosphere. It all started unofficially with *Jonathan Miller's* eccentric adaptation of 'O Whistle My Lad & I'll Come To You' (M. R. James again) in 1968. Haunting & classic. BBC revived this Christmas tradition around 2012 with Mark Gatiss at the helm for 3 years anyway. All these have DVD & blu ray releases, though I;m not sure how available they are in America. You can sample them here on thetube.
Thank you for this listing of Christmas films. Great idea. You have a blessed Christmas. Remember, that light was passed on to you by your beloved. Ciao
A fine array of Christmas movies - mostly from my personal favorite eras of Hollywood cinema, the 30s and 40s. About “Remember the Night”… it was written by Preston Sturges before he was a director and is a superb romcom with some solid dialogue, a great narrative, and a nice dollop of Xmas “feels.” My traditional watch is “White Christmas” which is delightfully colorful with some fine songs and its own supply of holiday tears. The best to you in these trying times!
What a comprehensive list! I'm also a big fan of classic movies and have seen all but three of these (I never heard of Beyond Tomorrow & Christmas Holiday). You included all of my classic favorites. I would have recommended an all-tiime favoriye, Remember the Night, as I do to any friends who like vintage films because hardly anyone knows it, but I'm glad you do.
Merry Christmas. I've seen many of those older movies a half dozen times over the years. They are sweet and innocent by today's standards. It's nice to put one on and drift back to a simpler times, at least simpler for me.
Definitely enjoying, from your recipe last year, a Tom & Jerry. Your knowledge of the old film Christmas genre is, just as your knowledge of 60s music, encyclopedic! Merry Christmas to you Matt and all the best in 2025.
"Remember the Night" is a great film that is overlooked. "Christmas in Conneticut" is a favorite as the writing is brilliant and the cast makes it work. "Holiday Inn" is a favorite due to Crosby and Astaire playing off each other. "The Bishops Wife" is amazing. I keep telling folks about it as it may be my favorite Christmas film. "Miracle on 34th Street" is the best Santa movie. "Wonderful Life" is wonderful even though most of it isn't very Christmasy. The Sim "Christmas Carol" is the best version of a timeless story. Dickens story just gets better and better.
I've got a couple more for you: "Larceny, Inc." (1942) with Edward G. Robinson, Broderick Crawford, Jane Wyman, Anthony Quinn and a host of others. Christmas comedy heist. "Lady on a Train" (1945) starring Deanna Durbin again. A Christmas comedy noir mash-up. I highly recommend them both. I am a fan of most of the films you mentioned. Merry Christmas, Matt.
Merry Christmas 🎄 Matt! I’ve basically have the same pile. Some in VHS. lol. I also like Charlie Brown Christmas. I start watching right after Thanksgiving. Just finished this morning Bishop’s Wife. Grant is awesome. I study the houses, furniture, Nick knacks too. I love the set of Christmas in Connecticut. Greenstreet is superb. 🎉
Matt, this was a great video for me. In October I lost my youngest son, he took his own life and this Christmas is going to be very hard. He was called Alfie and he was only 19 but he loved watching the old Christmas films with me. Our favourites were The Bishop's Wife and one you didn't mention, Penny Serenade. Maybe that last one wasn't a Christmas film but it's most memorable scene takes place at a Nativity play so it always reminds me of this time of year. If you haven't seen it, I urge you to. It stars Cary Grant and Irene Dunne. It's about old records which makes it even better. Have a great Christmas sir.
Love the Alistair Sim version - it’s playing on TUBI (usually hard to find each year). Glad to see you active on youtube. May this coming year be far better for you.
Great video Matt. Over the years I've seen many of the Christmas and holiday-adjacent films you showed. Every year, however, I'll be watching one of It's a Wonderful Life, the 1970 Albert Finney Scrooge, or - the best - the 1951 Alistar Sim A Christmas Carol. You had The Lemon Drop Kid in your list, and I would highly recommend watching it if you can. I've not seen that one for years, and it's an excellent post-Bing flick.
Recently discovered The Lemon Drop Kid, enjoyed it and bought a copy of it. Probably decided to reply to your comment to Matt, because we share the same first name/Robert. Don't know if you've heard of these Christmas/Holiday films, but a couple I'd recommend would be The Christmas List (Think that's the title) made in the late '70s/early '80s. It stars Michael Learned (Best known for playing Olivia Walton, on The Waltons TV series), who plays a divorced woman, who relocates to a different city. In the new city, she decides to join her Church's choir, which is run by a tyrannical Choir Master (Played by John Houseman, duplicating his Professor Kingsfield/Paper Chase character). The choir is rehearsing Handel's Messiah, and the Choir Master is never happy with how they're singing. The movie ends on a positive note. Another film would be Yes Virginia, There Is A Santa Claus. There's both an early 1970s animated version, and a mid 1980s version (Think it was made by Hallmark) starring Richard Thomas (As Virginia's father), Charles Bronson as Reporter Frank Church, who wrote the famous reply back to Virginia O'Hanlon's letter, asking if there was really a Santa Claus. It's a good family Christmas movie, based upon something which really happened!
A couple of corrections: The two movies I mentioned, the first starring Michael Learned and John Houseman, came out in 1980, and is called A Christmas Without Snow. The animated version of Yes Virginia, There Is A Santa Claus came out in 1974. The version starring Richard Thomas and Charles Bronson came out in 1991.
Fantastic and interesting selection, Matt. And so pleased that you gave a nod to The Man Who Came to Dinner. Funnily enough, Marx Brothers films have a strong Christmas association for me. I think that's because, years ago, the BBC used to show them very late on Christmas night to close their Christmas programming. Wishing you a peaceful Christmas, Matt, and know that you're in the thoughts of all your viewers.
Thank you, Matt. You and I are very much on the same page with holiday movies. As I listened to you, I kept thinking, "He's going to mention, An Affair To Remember, I hope he includes, Holiday." I do prefer the 1938 version of A Christmas Carol, with Reginald Owen, and Gene and Kathleen Lockhart. I have wonderful memories of sitting on the rug in front of the TV wrapping packages with my Mom while watching White Christmas. Mom passed one December but I still watch every year. The Thin Man is a must! Holiday Inn, and The Bishop's Wife are delightful. I'm a kid of the 60's and grew up on Charlie Brown Christmas and Rudolph The Red Nose Reindeer. Matt, please do a 60's favorite movie from time to time. This was such fun. Bless you. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
I was going to mention that one. Sir Ralph Richardson is brilliant. Heart-breaking at times, it really delves into the nitty-gritty of the meaning of Christmas at its essence. Superb performances all around.
You have great taste in movies Matt 👌 but at least half of these movies you mentioned here I have not seen, so now is the perfect time for me to watch these Thank You for these christmas movie recomendations👍 Wishing you this christmas all the best Matt , -and also what a beautiful christmas tree🌲 cheers 🍻
I have to agree A Christmas Carol is the ultimate Christmas movie although I still can't decide which version I like best. Perhaps the Mr Magoo version from the 60s lol. Merry Christmas Matt
You hit all my old favorites, "The Bishop's Wife", "Remember the Night", "We're No Angels", "Miracle on 34th Street". One modern Christmas film I like by Nora Ephron is "Mixed Nuts". It won't get reacted to on You Tube because the 3 main actors Steve Martin, Madeline Kahn and Rita Wilson work at a suicide helpline. It's filled with loads of comedic actors you'll recognize. It's very Christmasy.
Matt you've got several of ny favourites there. One I would add Bell, Book, and Candle. Kim Novak plays a witch who Jimmy Stewart falls in love with. Set at Christmas and made the same year as Vertigo.
@@popgoesthe60s52Jack Lemmon also stars in it. It’s such a fun movie. I have special memories of it because my mom used to watch it when I was still living at home (ages ago since I am 71 now). We named our Siamese cat after the cat in the movie - PyeWacket. (Yes, a very creative name.)
I'm so glad you know about O. Henry's Full House. I love that movie. Oscar Levant and Fred Allen in The Ransom of Red Chief are sublime. Two of the greatest wits of the 20th century. I haven't gone looking for much Oscar Levant online, but I hope there is some. He was dangerously funny. O. Henry's Full House also has Marilyn Monroe in a small part, doesn't it? I think so. All of the songs in Meet Me in St. Louis, except the title song, were new songs. They're credited to Hugh Martin, Ralph Blane, and maybe one or two others, but in fact, Hugh Martin, who belongs in the same league as Frank Loesser, wrote them all. One of the great collections you can buy is Hugh Martin: Hidden Treasures, Songs for Stage and Screen, 1940 - 2010. Hugh Martin was a phenomenal talent.
Matt. It seems like we both have. Close to the same taste in movies . the old black and whites are better then most of today's movies , THANK YOU FRANK FROM MONTANA......... PS hope you have a good holiday ( as best as possible ) .....
You know movies as well as music. I knew all the films you mentioned but don't watch them - except the Alastair Sim Scrooge. I agree with you about that film. It's the one I watch every year.
Thanks Matt, learned of some new classics and reminded of others like Sim's Scrooge. Might add a new one if you haven't as yet heard of it "The Holdovers" which for me is a new holiday classic. Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas, Matt...You have quite a few Classic Movies on Your List!...My Top Fav is the 1951 Scrooge followed by Jimmy Stewart in It's a Wonderful Life...Follow these with "A Charlie Brown Christmas" (for the eternal Kid in all of Us) !...Blessings to You & Family...Take Very Good Care...xx
Matt so sorry for your recent loss. Please do your very best to carry on with whatever you choose to do.Anyway ,I was thinking it would be interesting if you did a review of Phil Spectors Christmas album.I'm starting to think it may be one of the best albums ever recorded.
Great list. I like Reginald Owen’s Christmas Carol as well. One set at Christmas is Destination Tokyo. The celebrate Christmas on the submarine. Merry Christmas. I hope you are surrounded by family and friends.
Great Video Matt. You have most of my favorites. I'll give you two others. Donovan's Reef 1962 John Wayne and Lee Marvin & Stalag 17 1953 William Holden. Fyi The very first time I saw Come to the Stable was in 2018. It's my sentimental favorite. Merry Christmas!
Matt, You are in our thoughts, you didn't have to do this this year, so thank you, and God bless,
This video was an easy way for me to enjoy these, which I normally would be watching with Heather. Thank you for the kind words and support.
❤@@popgoesthe60s52
Alastair Sim (A Christmas Carol) shows such an extreme change of heart from nasty miser to joyful altruism that makes this version the best IMO.
Agree 100%. Stage actors rule...
My favorite Christmas story is a Charlie Brown Christmas 🎄
May your Christmas be good

Yes that tree is white-flocked. I usually would get a real tree but Heather bought this one in her first Christmas in Milwaukee and I love it.
One of my favorites is All That Heaven Allows, not super Christmassy but set during. Great love story

It's hard to beat the Dickens story. Thanks for the comments!
Brilliant as always. MERRY CHRISTMAS, MERRY CRIMBLE to all!
I have to check a couple out I have not seen. Good selections. Nice to see you posting.
Thanks for the vid Matt. Been thinking of you much and glad see you are doing well. Merry Christmas!
David, I lost my wife, also in October. Crying is easy but we go on...I guess. My best to you.
So sorry to hear of your loss, David. My condolenses.
Love the Alistair Sim version - it’s playing on TUBI (usually hard to find each year). Glad to see you active on youtube. May this coming year be far better for you.
Merry Christmas, Matt!
☃️🎄🥂🍾
Matt, thank you for sharing many Christmas movies that we may not have considered watching. Merry Christmas!
The best of the season to you Matt - thank you for your channel !
Thank you, Mark!
Lemon Drop Kid is probably one I will pick up by next year. Thank you for commenting, Robert!
Wishing you a lovely Christmas, Matt!
Thank you, Miguel - you too.
Merry Christmas, Matt.
I love old movies and I love your list!
Most I've seen Matt but you supplied a couple I'm going to check out. Merry Christmas!
Thank You Matt and have a great New Year!
Thank you, Jacky.
Merry Christmas, Matt. Will have to check out The Apartment again!
Merry Christmas Matt!❤😊
Great list...all the best in the New Year.
Somebody else has mentioned The Holly and the Ivy which is terrific.
“It Happened on 5th Ave” is on TCM tonight at 8:00
Gonna have to check it out!
The earlier version of Holiday is also worth seeing.
I have to agree A Christmas Carol is the ultimate Christmas movie although I still can't decide which version I like best. Perhaps the Mr Magoo version from the 60s lol. Merry Christmas Matt
I loved that Magoo version! I still remember that beautiful song the young Scrooge sang as a lonely little boy at Christmas.
Great list Matt! The Thin Man is set around Christmas and the second Thin Man is set around New Years. Have a great Holiday season.
I do have the second Thin Man which has Jimmy Stewart. Thanks Thomas!
Very cool, I'll check out Mixed Nuts - thanks !
Matt you've got several of ny favourites there. One I would add Bell, Book, and Candle. Kim Novak plays a witch who Jimmy Stewart falls in love with. Set at Christmas and made the same year as Vertigo.
Yes, a few have mentioned that one. I've never seen it all the way through but I will have to check it out.
I appreciate it, Frank, and I hope you have a nice holiday too!
You know movies as well as music. I knew all the films you mentioned but don't watch them - except the Alastair Sim Scrooge. I agree with you about that film. It's the one I watch every year.
Merry Christmas Matt and wishing you a magical New Year!!!!
All the best to you Matt. Merry Christmas ❤
Have a good New Year man....let's hope it's better than the last one for ya.
Thank you, Barb!
Merry Christmas Matt! Excellent list of good Christmas feel good movies!
All the best to you Matt
Thank you, Ed.
Ginger Rogers made some deep movies. She was a real sweetie
Thanks so much Matt... Merry Christmas!
Ah, I'll have to rewatch Stalag 17. I don't remember a Christmas backdrop to that one. I still have to see Donovan's Reef. Thanks Jake!
