  • 'Two for show - one for go'
    Not one to sit still, Ivan has fitted the single Miller carb on to the Hall Scott engine. This video shows Ivan and John checking the dry sump pumps are working, developing an extended breather tube and catch tank system for the oil and testing the single carb on the original manifold from the Hall Scott aeroplane engine - then developing the manifold to make it more appropriate for a car. We had some boys helping in the Shed on Wednesday, so they got to sit on the bolster and have a ride up the field.

    It is soo easy to forget how important our older generations are. Look at the accumulated knowledge that he has. We could lose that without the videos

      When I was just out of school an old boy in the village had just retired and his plan was to build a broad-wheeled Sussex waggon. I was to be his 'lad' and I can't tell you how excited I was about this and all the trips to source materials only heightened my anticipation. Unfortunatley he passed away quite suddenly and nobody knew what to do with any of the materials, nobody was interested and everything was thrown or burned. Of course, it upset me, but the most upsetting thing was the loss of knowledge that old boy had gathered over a lifetime. He and Ivan are peas from the same pod, even down to the 'adjusted' leg lengths of his boiler suit. Needless to say these videos are the highlight of my week. Always.

      That’s a great story. I expect it’s too much to ask if you would now consider doing some research and building one yourself and start a you tube channel to cover the build in his memory. When you are gone it could go into a heritage museum possibly…He would be pleased 🙏

    Aero engines, light aircraft at least, draw warm air into the carburettor by passing it over the exhaust system first. Cold air is selected by the pilot for normal running as warm/hot intake air reduces power. Carb heat is used for low power settings when icing becomes a problem, i.e. when descending and landing. But the air is heated 'before' it enters the carburettor.

    thanks everyone for the update video , its great to have these updates with all there content and we get to see the thought process too , the young lad who went for a spin with Ivan had the biggest smile ever , now that has got to be better than any computer game and what a memory to cherish , cant wait to see and hear how it performs with the new modifications

    Suzie, You are doing an excellent job of shooting and participating in these excellent videos. Miller lived in Los Angeles but made his bones at Indianapolis. Cars with his engines won at Indianapolis 10 times -- and Offenhauser for yet another 30 years until they were regulated out of racing. My dad was a big Indianapolis race fan in the 1950s.

    I passed your last cult chat on the Miller carb on to a fellow that works for Harry A. Miller in Troy, Michigan and is active in vintage sprint and Indy car restorations as well as the Miller and Offy engines. Harry A. Miller have most all of the original drawings for anything Miller made back in the day. They may be a source of information for you if you haven't contacted them already. I'm loving the videos of the Hall-Scott adventures.

    Aircraft piston engines with a carburettor employ carb heating (selectable during ground running and flight) using warm air taken from around the exhaust manifold to prevent carburettor ice forming which I'm sure you are aware can form even on the warmest of days. Just saying! 👍

    I meet a local machinest as a pre teen who reminds me of Ivan. He put me on the path to a love of machinery. I wonder if he knew the profound effect he had on a young man. Ivan keep the kids helping they are learning more than you know

    Dear Ivan, I've only just seen your video concerning the Hall and Scott / Miller Carburettor tests reference icing. According to various sources, carburettor icing can occur at 0 to about 15 Degrees centigrade depending on humidity. Aeroplanes needed carburettor de-icing because for every 1000 ft of altitude the air gets about 6.5 degrees C colder than sea level. You may find that once you've got the engine going, there's enough radiated and conducted heat to prevent the carburettor from icing. You can prove this with self adhesive maximum temperature recording strips which you can get from RS components. Their part number 906-4599 records temperatures maximum 50 degrees C in 10 degree steps. The idea is that the colour of the strip changes permanently at whichever maximum temperature it has experienced. These things are self adhesive, so if you get a degreased bit of the carburettor near the throttle assembly, then drive the car with the bonnet / engine cover on and see what temperature you get. It my be that the most likely thing you'll get is icing up when starting from cold. I used to have an old Humber Hawk that was a beggar to start in the cold. I used to find that heating up the inlet manifold with my DIY hot air gun (for paint stripping) until the manifold was hand hot would get it to start first go even when the outside temperature was freezing.

    For cold starting ,maybe find a way to take heat from the header and position say like a tube design to the top of the manifold where it is cold..? just a thought ,fascinating and pure genius...HALL SCOTT YOU ARE AMAZING!

    I was thinking the same thing at 4:21 , maybe cast a new inlet manifold to look more like the single carb. Only using two carbs. And look like the vintage equipment. Maybe add a turbo , put the carbs in a box. With a electric pump, and rising rate regulator, get 5-8 psi with water/ethanol injection supplied while under 3.5psi + boost! That would be a monster. If the crank can handle it. Maybe take timing out , loose powerbto save crank!✌️

    Ivan for what its worth about 60 odd years ago a spotty youth made a manifold for a mini from 45 degree yorkshire elbows cos' It made a much smoother run in and gas flow into the engine, it definitely worked well until it didn't and when I opened the bonnet the manifold was like an ice lolly !! It might be worth having a plan B ready to maybe try a wrap or some kind of heat exchanger like a heater hose extension running by it and then wrap the whole shebang with a jacket ??.

    The balance pipe should go between the centre of each 'U' shaped inlet manifold.

    Another excellent video. Ivan , please introduce us to the yougster next time, it's great to see a young 'un interested in old machinery. Hope you produce a video when at Goodwood the weekend after next, it will be fascinating to see how you are welcomed and perceived. Love the fact that 'Shed Racing' are the complete opposite of 'cheque book engineering'! Thanks for the videos.

    I have seen a couple dual carb engines converted to single.
    I have been surprised at the increase in torque and better drivability. Might loose some over all power but if your not racing is is always nicer to live with.

    No, you need just a bit of warm air ducted to the intake to prevent icing, and a bit of denaturated spirit in the petrol. it is the throttle you need to warm up, not the air after the carb.

    A better idea is to follow aircraft practice. Just arrange an alternative air supply which is warm- perhaps air warmed by the radiator. Use this when carb ice is suspected.

      have never been happy with 2 on it - it struggled to tick over - but one follower suggested a balance pipe which definitely would have helped

    RE Balance pipe.
    Instead of straight pipes where you indicated, how about on the top centre of manifolds. Use 2 right angle aluminium tig welded fittings, connected by a hose. More accurate balancing using this method.

    Ivan, this is truly the best Pearly Queen content I have ever seen! Personally, I would fit 4 x Harley S&S Super G carburetors. It would be just thew ticket to have 1 per cylinder if all else fails. Those rods look like they were overbuilt, as it was an aircraft engine. They Charlatans engine probably had all components as light as possible as it was a pure racer. WHen he (Ed Pink) boxed the conrods, he still drilled lightening holes in the metal. Higher dome pistons sounds like the ticket though

      S and S carbureters wouldn't be allowed in the Vintage Sports Car Club as they are a 'modern' carb, only period modifications are allowed, in this case Edwardian i.e. pre 1919 or at least Vintage of before 1930.

      Oh, drat. I was told only the engine must be? Anyway, FWIW, my friend used a S&S Super E carb to great effect on his Mercedes 230 Kompressor blown MG Midget 1500cc to great effect. Just never use a Diaphragm type carb with a blower, you just can't get away from the lean spot when you whack the throttle..

    Build a 1" spacer off the head to the manifold to keep your Millar carb off the block & a bracket to stop the swing & vibration? Just another thought. Also copper tube around the intake manifold with rad water to heat? I had a 5.0 Bedford 6 with a ram air with a 1¾ SU carb on it with the 2 speed Eaton diff she could go 90mph. Not bad for a 10 ton bus...lol

    Balance pipes on twincarb set ups usually join the manifolds near the carbs? , that treats all 4 cylinders equally. Linking cylinders 2 and 3 as mentioned here could well give unexpected results with 2&3 interacting and 1&4 not benefitting properly from the balance pipe?

    That engine would be a monster with 9:1 compression and a modern cam lobe profile. The modern petrol should allow about 8.5-9.5:1 ,maybe 11:1 with the 100 octane, the old petrol was only 40 octane or slightly higher. If i was racing back then id bore the jets out about 40% larger maybe add a second idle circuit. By drilling and soldering some small copper tubing into the carb bowl and the venturi, with a copper block in between. And drill snd tap thr block to restrict the fuel. Mix the poor quality petrol with about 50-60% methanol with about 10-20%,of the methanol being ethanol, depending on the temperature to help starting, maybe add a splash of butane in colder weather. And crank the compression to atleadt 10:1, thr octane should be close to 100, and the methanol cooling the cylinder detonation shouldn't be a problem! If it is richen the mix to see if it helps. I love these old engines!

    Why not put coolant through the manifold rather than oil? A small bore thermostat bypass as is used for a heater. At the same time a heater could be added for driver comfort. A Morris Minor type is self contained and easy to install. It can be also used as an auxiliary cooler on hot days and to hell with driver comfort.

    I don't understand why you need heat. Cold air is denser, and there's not much chance of icing up I would have thought.

      @@shed_racing Oh, that's surprising! In that case I would insulate the manifold from the head, and have some limited heat for the carb, or even have an intake near the radiator with a flap valve for cool air later.
