  • Watch McClintock Well #1 as its pumped in the Fall of 2021 in Oil City, Pennsylvania.
McClintock Well #1 was one of the hundreds of wells drilled along Oil Creek during the frenzy that followed the success of the Drake Well. Brewer, Watson and Company leased land on the Hamilton McClintock Farm and commenced drilling in August 1861. Using leg power, they "kicked down" the well until it struck oil at a depth of 620 feet. McClintock Well #1 initially produced 175 barrels of oil a day but was down to half a barrel a day in 1920. What makes the site remarkable is that it has continued to produce oil for over 150 years.
Over the decades, McClintock Well #1 changed ownership a number of times. Owners included:
Brewer, Watson and Company - 1860
    McClintock Petroleum Company - 1865
    Robinson Oil Company - 1892
    Brundred Oil Corporation - 1927
    Quaker State Corporation - 1952
Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission - 2000
The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission acquired McClintock Well #1 in 2000. The well is located off Route 8 just north of Oil City, Pennsylvania. When the well is pumped, the proceeds from the oil sales are restricted to repairs, upkeep and maintenance of the McClintock Well #1 site. In addition to interpreting the early days of Pennsylvania’s oil industry, the McClintock Well #1 site serves as a trailhead on the Erie to Pittsburgh bike trail.
The McClintock Well #1 interpretive area and trailhead are open dawn to dusk year-round. Admission to the site is free.

My old friend Augie Holtz took care of this gem. He was such a wonderful man ! Love the oil and gas patch . I was raised on the derrick floor of a Standard Rig and National Machine. Those were great times in America !

Any chance of getting the rod line working again? I grew up just over the state line, and lease owners were still running single-cylinder engines in pump houses. Fascinating stuff!

There is a rod line system at Drake Well Museum and Park, but not at our McClintock Well #1 site. Our rod line system runs May-October.

The well is not continually pumped. The well is pumped one to two times a year.

If only pumped a couple times per year, why say its oldest continiously producing well ?

I'm sorry to inform you, but we have wells still pumping here in Oil Springs Ontario Canada, that date back to 1858 and are still producing an 1/8th of a barrel a day. Your claim as to the Worlds oldest should be rebranded as "One of the Worlds Oldest" continuously producing oil wells.
