That small entrance you found in the bottom of the well might be an old water mine (yes those are a thing in portugal ) that was caped off when they built that new well. It basically means that previouse to the construction of that well there was a mine conected to that spring that stored the water in a horizontal way rather than vertically (like a normal well) and it would be accessed in a lower point of the land. These water mines can have hundreds of meters in length and can pass through various pieces of land until they reach the point of access.

The funny thing is, the smoking above an open vat of gasoline is perfectly safe. You can put out a cigarette in gasoline repeatedly and consistently without any effort. You cannot get gasoline fumes to light with a cigarette; it is the cigarette lighter that is dangerous. The really dangerous safety violation was entering an enclosed space without any safety precautions on a shitty rickety ladder without any possibility of anyone helping him if he collapses. This was Russian roulette levels of stupid. If there's no oxygen in there because it was consumed and it was not ventilated properly; you don't feel a danger and you don't feel out of breath. You just suddenly feel woozy and collapse. If someone goes in to help you, they will die too and on that shitty ladder there's no way they can help you or drag you out of there. Your body doesn't feel low O2, it feels high CO2, that's why hyperventilating before keeping your breath for as long as possible is dangerous; you can suddenly pass out before you can surface for air because you purged the CO2 but still ran out of O2.
You best remove some dirt around the opening/top so no rainwater, or other water can come in from the top, that will pollute your well. Je moet de bovenkant rondom uitgraven zodat de deksel en put rand hoger ligt als de omgeving. Oppervlaktewater mag niet in de put komen, bij bijvoorbeel veel regenval enzo. Verder goed bezig !! I think you are incorrect there. The pipe shows no running water but the Well definitely fills up from the bottom. Also at the bottom you can see the spring-head (rock face) in a specially built archway. Many people and rescuers have died in confined spaces.

Didn't see them toss in gravel after shoveling out the sediment. Shouldn't they have tossed in a foot or two of gravel to help naturally filter the water?
From previous experience, to protect from snakes or other similar getting into the well, use some type of seal around the perimeter before reinstalling the lid.
A nice well! Just found your channel. And wow, you really have bought a lot of work. Interesting to see the progress. And that others bought some land with even more work than we did ;-) BTW: So you have granite, mimosas and brumbles. Mhmm..., so I guess your land is located in the Centro, maybe Beira Beixa? We have granite, mimosas, brumbles and brooms in the South of the Serra da Gardunha. And I have to tell you something: That guy with the digger, if you wanna get rid of the mimosas, you have to call him. Digging out the roots is the only way to prevent that they are not coming back.
The well was quite clean in the beginning. Most wells you just don't swim in them. From what you've shown in the video I'd probably would deep clean it like that in the long run. Also would have stored all the water that was taken from the well. I'm curious in how much time it will fill up - looking forward to the next video. Great project, wishing all the best.
The swearing in the video, for a Portuguese person, is way off the minimum... Security... is an absolute miracle none of them got hurt. Not only because of the way they think on doing stuff, but because you can hear their conversation, and some seem... A bit off on the alcohol side of things, to be doing that kind of job... Apart from that, great video and nice to see an exposed well after so many years. Great job you guys.
You dont want to fall down into the well. Because initially you can swim, but when you get tired, you will drown in the well. I have seen that happen several times in India. Wells are handy, but they are also really dangerous. You be ware! Greetings, Jeff
That was rather scary to watch in general. I liked how he was talking about going down when a brick was ready to fall down there, luckily he waited and moved it back to a safer spot.
That's not the scary part. Someone could have chucked down a ladder (they were filming after all). The really scary part is enclosed spaces. If the level of oxygen is too low, you don't feel it; there's no warning; everything is just normal until it is not and you feel a bit woozy before you pass out. There's no way to help you with that shitty ladder if there's no rope tied around you to pull you out.
It is. That is the sediment that fills over the years, its just what the watter brings. For wells its not a typically a problem as long as the intake valve is way above it so it would not collect any if it. For drinking wells its good to clean it every 10 or so years. Those guys should store or use it directly in the garden because its high neutriant stuff.
Great production values and a really interesting project to see develop.. How someone considering something similar.. I think so information on the costs would be useful
Is there a gap in the side wall to slide a pipe in? If you can slide it to the middle and then via the hatch mount your down tube and pump assembly with a hose clamp so you can disconnect it in the future and make sure you leave enough length in the pipe to slide it out without it dropping.
Man this is such a savings for you all. You now have no need to drill a well. Are you going to install a Solar Well Pump. We are totally off grid here in Chile and pump all our water with solar. Jim
In later videos they uncover an underground water cistern beneath the large shed ruin. It is dry but it has a similar looking pipe at the top. Perhaps water used to go to there but is now blocked, so it just seeps into the land & back into the original water-mine, which he shows briefly in an earlier video downhill in the undergrowth.
I own a house in Portugal. Western Algarve near Lagos. When my Dad first bought the place the 2 huge old wells had about 15m of water in them - now they are down to about 1.5m or 5ft deep. They will become unusable soon. The water table has been depleted so much by avocado farmers and golf courses. One of the wells has what looks like a cave coming in from the side as well. Is there anyone in Portugal who still digs these wells out? I think the base of the wells is solid rock.I was told nobody does that any more. Would be such a shame to go to mains water.
Makes me curious as to how old that well is. I can see that it was hand dug and shored up with red brick and mortar. My best guess is about 75 years or older.
I work with sewerlines and i Can tell you that you are very lucky to be alive. My biggest concern would be the lack of oxygen. I would never enter that without gasdetector and a safetyharness.

He has to be the worst Portuguese drunken JCB driver Ever ... A big tosser , o pior ... LOL
Five stars for the underwater footage and i had to laugh out loud when the guy was smoking while fueling up the pump and your comment was hilarious too!
In the first minute and a half glory love the music in the background leaning on the everlasting hands.😊
Thanks for posting and sharing. Big well looks like it is in pretty good condition!
Didn't see them toss in gravel after shoveling out the sediment. Shouldn't they have tossed in a foot or two of gravel to help naturally filter the water?
That portuguese workers ahahah good usage of the language ;)
So fun!! Watched it twice. Vicariously living your adventure and loving it.
looool, thats only a little wilder than we do it at work. alls well that ends well. Saude!
Great movie, fun to watch, you're not a scared man, tough shot😛
Health and safety out the window my way off working with a couple of cuts and broken bones 😂💯🤗🇬🇧
Great edit Dave. Super excited to see the pump system 😊
Excited to see the new series in April. I'm keeping an eye on your website hoping a project gets listed that I can help with. Love your mission.
For a well that is vey clean and clear
Lol 🤣🤣🤣 safety conscious INDEED..that had me in stitches😅😅😂
Those guys do scary stuff with that big machine of theirs …😐 Thanks for the video! 🌀❤️🌀
From previous experience, to protect from snakes or other similar getting into the well, use some type of seal around the perimeter before reinstalling the lid.
when the portuguese guys took the camera, was basically swearing all along 🤣
That was awesome. Thanks for letting us watch.
Safety first 😂😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏✊️✊️✊️✊️✊️✊️
Goats are really good at clearing land and fertilizing at the same time.
This is a huge step for your project, congratulations!
The Material you get out of the well is good staff for your Garden the plant s will growe
Bonus that well being so close to your camp.👍🏽😎
A nice well! Just found your channel. And wow, you really have bought a lot of work. Interesting to see the progress. And that others bought some land with even more work than we did ;-)
BTW: So you have granite, mimosas and brumbles.
Safety first, love the commentary. A country where things are a little haphazard.
The cigarette above the pump, I laughed but oh man
The well was quite clean in the beginning. Most wells you just don't swim in them.
From what you've shown in the video I'd probably would deep clean it like that in the long run.
Also would have stored all the water that was taken from the well.
I'm curious in how much time it will fill up - looking forward to the next video.
Great project, wishing all the best.
Yup I would have stored the water for gardening and the sediment aswell.
OMG Portuguese workers are so chaotic love it hahaha 🤣
Master and commander in the far side of the world!! 🎵 🎼 🎶
I can’t believe you jumped in that water! There could have been a mad giant killer eel living in there. 😂
You dont want to fall down into the well. Because initially you can swim, but when you get tired, you will drown in the well. I have seen that happen several times in India. Wells are handy, but they are also really dangerous. You be ware!
Greetings,
Jeff
That was rather scary to watch in general. I liked how he was talking about going down when a brick was ready to fall down there, luckily he waited and moved it back to a safer spot.
That's not the scary part. Someone could have chucked down a ladder (they were filming after all). The really scary part is enclosed spaces. If the level of oxygen is too low, you don't feel it; there's no warning; everything is just normal until it is not and you feel a bit woozy before you pass out. There's no way to help you with that shitty ladder if there's no rope tied around you to pull you out.
What did they bring out of the well? Was it just mud?
Kinda sad we didn't get to see the clean bottom of the well, bc it still looked kinda dirty.
Great job by the Portuga crew! How much did that cost?
One think that I always think when I saw the map of the land, that 2 pieces of land where there is grass for the lamb is perfect for golf course
Man this is such a savings for you all. You now have no need to drill a well. Are you going to install a Solar Well Pump. We are totally off grid here in Chile and pump all our water with solar. Jim
yeah, you dont need civilization to build a solar pannel right?
@@franciscoandreatta5803 No I just do not need it any more. Ahahaha Ahahaha Jajajaj ajajajaj
I saw the name of your Channel and was instantly drawn to watch your video. I can't imaging why.
Would not wait some days for the 'dirt to sink down'. Last time we build a well we had a pump running for a day, to suck as much as possible dirt out.
Very nice work sir I like your camera..I'm from Philippines..
Clean 💦 Water that’s a Nice Well 🇺🇸💯🥰
Where does the hole you labeled as "the overflow" go?
I would guess its simply going into the earth and delivers water for the surrounding
@@Keptains Dead ends in the earth? 😳 That really doesn't make sense, it looks like the well should have been allowed to fill way past that output.
Likely not an overflow but a pipe coming from a "water mine" as one would say in Portugal, feeding additional water to the well.
@@VascoHenr ... might have been a pipe from ground drain or roof gutters in years past. A hole in the ground is a good place to store excess water.
The dude with the cigarette pouring the gas, that’s the guy I want to hang out with around a fire telling stories
I enjoy tagging along with your project.
I didn't get my satisfaction of the secret tunnel door at the bottom of the well. Where does it go? Why is it there? can someone please explain to me?
Whats that Lassie? Timmy fell down a well? (I'm really dating myself).
Right up there with that scene in "Blade" where Kris Kristofferson smokes while sloppily filling the car's tank!
Great video. Instructive and entertaining.
Safe as bro, we all have different levels! Nice watching
Make sure that you use cement arround the lid so no animals can fall into your well
Mooie put wel! Maar veilig werken is wel een dingentje daar, een helmpje op had ook geen luxe geweest met die emmers bagger die eruit kwamen.
Did you put filtering sand on the bottom of the well?
My kind of guys. Start the job with a few beers to smoothe out the curves.
That deep well should keep you in water all year round.
You have huge balls to go in there!
Bigger balls must correlate with smaller brains.
This was an exciting one. Those Portuguese men are something else 😂…..I mean that in a good “salt of the earth” way.
Neighbor probably wondering why they want to use that old septic tank as a well. lol
Never never ! Go down wells with out removing lose bricks and stone from top edge!!!!! one of them falls it's probably game over !
Hope there is no ground water quality issues, are you going to get the well water tested as well?
id certainly suggest it!@
Glad your ladder was not long enough at first. Was worried about the atmosphere down there and you just passing out... Please ALWAYS ventilate void spaces first before entering... And take another person with you that stays outside... Nice project and good luck!👍
