Those are not color presets. Those are video graphic adapters modes: cga, ega, vga. Cga had 4 colors, ega 16 and vga 256. Seeing vga monitor first time in 1994 for me was like seeing Jesus :)
This reminds me of how back in the day I thought "Read Me" was another proprietary graphics adapter/array like "Tandy", since they were listed together in Dragonstrike's start menu😅
As a panzer dragoon fan, it’s quite amusing that they decided to go with lances instead of crossbows (like archers on horseback). Still, this is quite fascinating! Would love to see a similar game come out today!
Try hitting a moving target while yourself also being on something that's moving. . . in the air. Crossbows wouldn't really be used because it'd be nigh impossible to hit anything.
I mean, it's based on the Dragon Lance Chronicles, which is literally all about magical lances that can kill dragons. So would have been weird as hell if they made a Dragon Lance game but then gave the riders crossbows
I remember this game from when I was in college. One of my friends had it and I was fascinated. I thought it was such a cool idea. One thing you forgot to mention was you could fall off your mount and your dragon would dive down and try to save you. In 1990, that was a pretty neat feature. I agree, it would be awesome if someone could make a spiritual successor to this game.
My favourite dragons are silver. Not only do they like people, they like them so much they spawned an entire subrace of humans. And they make their lairs on clouds, which is amazing.

Daisy is the unexpected MVP of this video. Her inclusion was much appreciated. As someone who found this channel with your work on video games, it's been a lot of fun and you've made some really well done videos. I hope you keep up the great work and that you enjoy what you're making.
Needs a VR remake that adds in the ground battles in the style of the total war tactical map. You set up your army with initial commands/tactics that they follow, while overhead you battle the opposing dragon riders. But you can also hover near ground units to micromanage their tactics, strafe enemies with dragon breath, and land and fight.
Speaking of old and fun/hard WH40k games, don't look past Final Liberation, epic battles vs the orcs with the guard and some space marines sprinkles for spice is a great and semi obscure one to check out :) Dragon strike in addition to The Champions of Krynn were my introduction to Dragonlance before I ever found the table top gaming community at the time so I really appreciate this video.
The only thing I remember about Final Liberation is the cheesy FMV cutscenes, and artillery units being ridiculously overpowered, killing anything before it got close (even titans!).
Westwood really were major innovators for their time. Naturally they knocked stuff out of the park with Eye of the Beholder and other early DND titles, but don't forget they helped to define the RTS genre with Command and Conquer, a project that would carry through the company until it's eventual death-knell by EA. They were still doing RPGs throughout the time too, though they created their own universe IIRC.
Thank you for these videos. If there’s one thing I like more than playing niche video games, it’s not actually having to do that and watching someone else do it.
I remember this game! My dad (a huge flight sim enthusiast) and I both put in a ton of hours on it. (my favorite color dragon is black, my players always expect one black dragon bbeg in d&d campaigns)
My favorite color dragon is cat. Loving the video game retrospectives, but I hope you've also got some more historical content in the pipeline. Three games called DragonStrike if you count the boardgame, my man. ; ) Also, growing up, I think Black and Amethyst dragons were my faves, cause Khisanth was hella cool and who doesn't love a good lozenge?
Ah, this game. The very first game I ever got for my family's brand new 286 PC, complete with 1 MB of RAM and 20 MB hard drive. Popping in the single 5.25" floppy disk in came in, I was blown away. You have no idea how jaw dropping those pixel art stills were in 1990. Imagine jumping straight from the original NES to that, because that's what it was. I mostly loved the game, but what nearly ruined it for me was not healing damage between missions, at ALL. I think you got like one healing ointment every other mission, that could heal around half your rider's health or 1/5th your dragon's health. But then on top of that, in order to join the higher knight orders for silver and gold dragons (choosing not to advance meant the campaign ended prematurely early a couple missions later, without going to the end) you had to either give up your power-boosting magic items OR pretty much all of your healing ointments. Which meant virtually zero healing for your rider. For the entire campaign. I wish they healed you up fully between every mission, then just increased the difficulty to compensate. If you took a big hit, you had to make the decision to restart the whole mission, or push on with very low health for the rest of the campaign where a single glancing hit could kill you. Extremely frustrating. Even without the long term healing, your rider could often be killed in a single hit even at full health by a breath or bite attack. Sometimes there was zero warning, unlike almost every other flight simulator where you got some kind of warning like seeing lasers shoot by, or bullet tracers, or a missile alarm. Just out of nowhere boom your rider is instantly dead. Some of the missions could be very long too, and doing great in them only to be instantly killed out of nowhere was frustrating (the final missions against the flying castles were so long, I honestly thought there was some hidden objective I wasn't fulfilling and the enemies were endless until I did). This is dying for a modern remake.
In _Chainmail,_ purple worms were a kind of chromatic dragon. Up until 3rd edition, the generic "poison gas" that green dragons breathed was explicitly chlorine gas
The best dragon color is brass. The idea of a talkative dragon that will bury you up to your neck in sand if you won’t talk in order to have a proper conversation is hilarious and really illustrates that a good dragon is often only “good” when compared to the evil ones. You’re still a lesser form of life in its eyes, but at least you’re not food.

Such a great game, absolutely loved it as a child.
Man, as a guy who loved the original Crimson Skies videogame, the premise and mechanics sound amazing. This would be a great game to see a modern remake of, just the same game but with modern graphics.
For anyone looking for some fantasy creature dogfighting, I'd actually recommend "Falconeer", not really mouse and keyboard friendly but its a surprisingly fun little fantasy dogfighting game about flying giant falcons (Or Wyverns via DLC) in the defense of various nations and factions. Not nearly as high stakes and difficult, at least on the lower difficulties, but the consistent map with different types of "shops" and extra elements in the dogfights like airships and...non-airships, are great for adding a little variety.
I have a copper dragon I roleplay in a non tabletop setting, that's kind of a multiverse "world between worlds" situation. Whenever he meets someone who's afraid of the local big red because he's red, assumes his traits for being copper, or otherwise someone from a DND/pathfinder setting mentions the scale color having anything beyond the most shallow, cosmetic significance.... It's very fun to write his utter confusion. "Yeah and my mom's green, does that make her a vegetarian? ... WHAT do you mean all greens are evil conniving poison monsters?!" This game looks like stupid fun, I definitely want to pick it up despite the age. I mean I grew up grinding Dragon Rage for the dragon flight :>

Being almost a year late: My favourite colour of dragon is yellow, because a city-razing tyrant being the colour of piss (and also poisonous frogs) is eternally funny to me.
Speaking of Dragon Strike, have you ever considered covering the board game? The one with the goofy live action video. I know its an oft covered topic already but after watching your other DND vids, there is no doubt in my mind that your take would be entertaining.
Of course my favourite dragons are the Gold Dragons and for a large margin, given how they have (or even surpass) all the advantages of the Black Dragons, without being immune to the resurrection spell! Oh, wait... this is not a HoMM3 video.
Hey man, since you seem to want more like this, you should take a look at Drakan. It's an early 2000 action adventure game, where you explore dungeons and fight orcs and stuff, then hop into your dragon and fight other dragons while carpet "bomb" ground enemies. Sadly, no flying melee, but it has great flight combat.
I'm glad you found your niche, but I hope this isn't the end of your videos that research ancient rpg adjacent games. No one else is doing that, and is immensely interesting.
You ever see the old Dragon Lords tabletop minis game from Grenadier? Came out on 1993, had a whole range of teeny-tiny (maybe 6mm scale?) dragons that came with a variety of (IIRC) five different bodies, five different sets of wings and a variety of riders. You could mix-and-match the parts, with bigger wings making you faster while bigger bodies made you tougher but slower and the riders all did different things for your combat ability. Very much an aerial dogfighting game, albeit not a great one. Not to be confused with the enormous range of 25mm scale fantasy minis Grenadier also made, because they really liked being confusing. :)
I don't know a lot of dragon related games, only know about drakengard an panzer dragoon and i feel that it could be awesome to have a modern dragon simulator :DDD
Surprisingly, it was Ebberon that made my favorite dragon change from Silvers to the Black dragons. A black dragon is the one that broke the rules in order to help save the mortal races and Ebberon itself, and that just really clicks for me. But if we're in Dragonlance, Silvers and Greens, all the way.
My favorite colour dragons were red & purple as a kid.
Once I was finally diagnosed with color blindness it became green & blues.

It's an early 2000 action adventure game, where you explore dungeons and fight orcs and stuff, then hop into your dragon and fight other dragons while carpet "bomb" ground enemies.
Sadly, no flying melee, but it has great flight combat.
We need an HD remake of this.
Silver Dragons are pretty damn cool looking.
You have a cool cat and jacket, I am jealous.
My favorite dragon color is Red. Because - fire breathing!
I mentioned this game to a friend.
He thought I-was making things ups
This audio quality was not meant for talking about DOS games
Surprisingly, it was Ebberon that made my favorite dragon change from Silvers to the Black dragons. A black dragon is the one that broke the rules in order to help save the mortal races and Ebberon itself, and that just really clicks for me. But if we're in Dragonlance, Silvers and Greens, all the way.
I mostly play in Pathfinder's Golarion setting nowadays, so Silvers are my absolute favorite. Because they're dragon paladins!
