I was 13 and rode the SP from Houston to San Jose in 1970. Steve Goodmans song is prophetic because he was on the City of New Orleans when he wrote that song. My experience was similar in as much as the train was trashed because the train companies were trying to get out of passenger service. I listen to Arlo Guthrie's version of that song often and think about that trip.
As the son of a proud railwayman who did his job with pride every day, this song really resonates with me. Those of us who remember the fading years of steam will always love this.
I wish I could say that I could join you in fond memories of the railroad, as I would love to have been working for one of the major or even minor railroads, in the days of Passenger service. Unfortunately the closest I ever got was working on the two-way radios and Communications equipment they had in california. For southern pacific. But there is a Certain Romance in Mystique that the railroad will always have and I have a great respect for the men and women that were able to do the jobs and what could be some of the worst environments, and worst weather possible.
My grandfather was a engineer for the Santa Fe on the Super Chief (later the Southwest Chief), Sunset Limited and City of New Orleans. Seems I spent half my childhood on the rails....This song is such a national treasure.

Here's the thing with Willie. He's an absolute legend just for the songs he's written. His singing and playing is fine, but he's absolute legend of a song writer. If he had just written the song Crazy and that's it, he'd be a great song writer IMO.

I saw that VH1 special in 1999 with him and Johnny Cash (another absolute legend song writer) and Willy broke a string. And while it was being replaced he borrowed Johnny Cash's guitar and it sounded so sweet when Willy played it. So probably.

Have seen this icon in two venues..one in Anchorage , Alaska, and one in an iconic ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, called The Surf....a place where so many icons have performed from Duke Ellington to Peter, Paul and Mary to Willie and it was the place where "the music died" after the last concert of Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper and Richie Valens. I grew up there. The ballroom has the energy of all those who've walked the halls and the dance floor. If you love music, don't miss it if you are in the area. It was a great venue. Willie was personable and connected with the audience. You could almost reach out...he hasn't lost it....💜
Willie did a free concert for the troops at MacDill AFB in 2003, just before Gulf War 2. Afterwards, the boys lined up for memorabilia and I was last. I think he was a bit bemused by the Australian uniform and all he had left was a guitar pick, so he autographed my slouch hat, which I still use. No-one believes it's Willie's signature, but it is.
Im a big fan of willie and sheryl. I have seen them both live. Great shows. Willie is a legend. Sheryl is very gifted and talented. She also in my opinion a pretty lady.

Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, and john Prine all had a resurgence in the few years before they died. It was as they knew that they had better do whatever they hadn't yet done. I've noticed that ominously similar behavior in Willie too.
