I have been stitching for over 20 years and have never tried to stitch in hand. Now that you have shown me this I may very well try it now. Thank you for showing this.
THANK YOU! I have watched 4-5 videos on this. Because of camera positioning or their hand covering the stitching process, I was never able to get a clear view on how to do this, until now. I am sooooo excited. I would love if you could make a part two and show how to travel to other distant rows on your fabric and to stitch up on a chart. I am excited to try this. Thanks again!
Hi, Christie! Enjoyed the short visit and tutorial. It warms my heart to see that someone else stitches exactly the same way I do! Watching your left handed method threw me off a little, but when you did the right handed method, I said, ah, there we go! Where I worked in the mid 80's, I worked in a pretty big company, lots of nice people, and at the time, cross stitch was very popular. There was a large group of ladies who would get together at lunch and stitch in a board room, or sometimes we would go to the local LNS. One of those ladies taught me to stitch in hand 35 years ago, 1985. It was life changing! I do my eyelets the same way, too. Love your nail polish!💅🏻😺
Hi! Just discovered this tutorial. I began cross stitch in the late 70’s and I also learned to make my x’s top left to bottom right first. I see lots of folks doing it the other way on Flosstube and have tried it but always go back to how I learned. So glad to see your method of in-hand sewing. I’m right handed so a special thanks for the extra effort to practice and show the right hand version!! Loving your quilt video too!
Hi Christie, This is a great video, thank you. I could watch you stitch all day. It’s very soothing. I’ve been watching your previous videos and your projects are amazing. They are so beautiful. You are very talented with your stitching and quilting. As far as your finishes go, you’ll finish them when you finish them. Sometimes you need a break. Gus is adorable. He’s a very handsome boy. Hello from Liz Matthews recommended your channel and I’m so glad she did. I look forward to your future videos. Kim
I started cross stitching again after many years of putting it down and I’m in the process of finishing all my wips I left years ago and I am using the sewing method but I use a q snap frame and I love it it’s so relaxing. I never tried it without a frame or hoop.
High five for lefty stitchers!!! I stitch the same way. Love the sewing/in-hand stitching method. So much faster. Thanks for the eyelet stitch example 😉
Thank you! Best stitch in hand I have seen. Feel like this will make my experience so much more enjoyable. I have tried others but this one is so much more logical to my brain! Please show more of your technique, like your start and stops. Would love to watch!
I stitch my x just the way you do, the first time I saw a cross stitch project, I went to a church bazaar, I ask the lady if it was hard to do, she said no, it’s not hard to do, all you have to do is sew exes, when I saw this cross stitch all in a frame, I fell in love with it, so the next day I went to white rose craft store, I bought a book, fabric, threads, needles and a frame, then I practice and practice this was in 1986 and I have been cross stitching ever since, by the way the white rose craft store is in Canada, i am from Canada, I like the way your are stitching, I think I will try your way
I recently started cross stitching again. I have been trying the sewing in hand method but your method is much smoother with the fluid motion you mentioned. Very helpful. Thank you see much. Great tutorial.
I am stitching a full coverage cross stitch project in hand, showing my (slow) progress on my video channel and instagram. It is refreshing to see that other creators also stitch without hoops and snaps. Thank you!
Thank you SO much for sharing this tutorial. I am also left handed and I start in the bottom right. However, until now, I’ve never seen a tutorial for in hand stitching. Maybe I can accomplish a little more in a day now 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 God bless you and your family, sweetheart ☺️
I’d love to learn to do this ONE DAY you make it look so relaxing. I’d also love to learn how you make your project bags. I want to make some for my grand daughters to put their doll clothes I made for them in. Your project bags are adorable, I was watching Lori Holt and realized it was you who made that tomato one for her, so stinking cute. So I bought some of her 10” stackers, 2 of her farmhouse books, vintage Christmas and the Alphabet one. I was hoping one of them would have a pattern to make those project bags like you make. Lol, I have enjoyed those books .I have made four or five blocks just for fun. Thank you for your channel it’s a joy and I can’t wait for your next one. Wishing you a fast recovery and complete healing with your eye .
I like seeing how other people do this. I do it very differently but there is no correct way. I turn my work upside down when I need to go back the other direction, and sometimes I finish my stitches as I go depending on what direction I need to go. I like the sewing method so much. It makes it so much faster to stitch.
I enjoyed your video. I have always stitched in qsnaps using a stand. But lately I have been stitching in hand using the sewing method.. and it is just so much more enjoyable to me like you said. And like you also said I can clearly see my stitches aren’t as neat as if I was using a qsnap. Which I kind of struggle with but need to accept. Because I get so much more joy out of stitching in hand. I’m thinking it’s worth the trade!
Thank you so much for showing us your stitching method. I heard you and Lori Holt talking about it on her RUclips last week and I was so confused. I started crossing this last fall after 20+ years. I just started trying linen in January, 28 ct, so I wanted to do the single X but it wasn’t comfortable and my stitching looked like a hot mess. I tried your method on my next section, OMG! So much easier and the stitches look so much better. I’m not thrilled with how open the weave is on the 28ct so I’ve bought some 32ct to see if that’s any better. I only use DMC because that’s what I have and can afford but I think it still looks good on the linen. Thank you again!
I loved seeing someone else stitch like I do! I agree -it’s soothing! I’m a quilter too and love hand stitching binding so this way came natural to me once I discovered it and I agree it’s faster than the hoop (I started stitching as a young girl on a hoop- so tedious) And thank you for showing the eyelet stitches in this method- I don’t think I’d figured it out quite like this and your way makes so much more sense! 😊 Thanks for sharing and have a great weekend!
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. I have not been able to use the sewing method and have tried numerous times. I wanted to use this method as it seems so much faster. I tried after watching your video and I think it may have sunk in. I am going to really give it a try. Thanks again!
Kristi- Thank you so much for making this video . This will be a FT that I'll be re watching again. Your stitching look so smooth and easy. Well Done!!!
Thank you for your video. It was a big help. #1...I am ambidextrous and stitch left handed. #2...I’ve got a wonderful chart that I’ve been putting off because of eyelets. Yay! I think I’m going to put you on super slow-mo so I can get that stitch mastered..😊👍🏻
I restarted cross stitch last year and use stitch in hand method but didn't like the way the traditional way is shown to make crosses until I watched the real housewives of cross stitch and Chelsea showed your way but for a right handed person and since then I do the crosses her way. Like you said less stress on your joints. What I also do if it's a lot of rows I do two rows up and down at a time it's so much better.
I tried this tonight & omgoodness it’s so much quicker and my stitches lay so pretty. Thank you for this video. I passed it onto a friend of mine too. 😍
Thank you so much! I am left-handed but was taught to stitch using my right hand and in a hoop. I am going to try stitching in hand with my left hand now that I have a good visual on how to do it.
Thank you! I have been searching for a tutorial for left handed stitching. This was excellent. Please do some more. I would also like to see how you start and finish a thread.
I missed seeing your face but hearing your voice was great! Awesome video! So far in my stitching I haven’t ever made an eyelet stitch. I do like stitching in hand. I only use q-snaps on large pieces that have a lot of confetti stitching. Thanks!! 😘😘
I enjoyed this video very much! I am a leftie, too. I think I can now do the eyelet stitch alot easier than the last time I tried it. Happy Stitching! Pam Miller
I cross my stitches the same directions as you. I think I was taught initially stamped crossstitch using the sewing method so maybe that’s why I do that. I’m right handed. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and even doing stitching ambidextrously! 💗
I am a leftie too...but I stitch with my right hand exactly as you stitch with your right hand. I can use a hoop at times, but I still use the sewing method even with the hoop. Going in and out really bothers my right shoulder. Thank you for the video!
Thanks so much for this video! I am right handed but I never thought about trying to stitch in hand left handed. I am going to try because I have learned that people who stitch with stands generally put their dominant hand underneath but I don’t. I really appreciate you taking the time to show how you go about it. You do it differently in a way I have never seen done before so this was very informative and interesting to me.
I’m like you , when I stitch two handed my left hand goes underneath. Apparently I was told by my optician that my left eye leads, but it should lead with my right because I am right handed. I also iron left handed so I have to turn the ironing board around to how everyone else has it. I was told by my Dad that as a child I use to pick up a pencil with my left hand. But my mother use to slap me every time I did. Back in the day you was classed as a bit backward if you was left handed. Which as we know today is totally untrue. All it means is the two sides to your brain are just switched. I also can only reverse park left hand down. My Dad is also left handed.
Very nice video and explanation of stitching in hand. I really enjoyed. Would you mind making one on stitching in hand when doing 1 over 1. Thanks so much
Thank you so much for this video. I too am left handed and this is extremely helpful for me. I am going to practice tomorrow. I currently stitch two handed on a frame but would like to stitch faster 😊. I have watched several videos in the past but they are all right handed. So I hope I can finally master this skill.
I agree that stitching in hand is quicker and that’s why I do it. I don’t like how my threads work out to uneven lengths though when I use two threads on 28 or 32 count but you may not have that issue. I’ve been noticing how Vonna stitches on fiber talk videos. She keeps her dominant hand underneath and pushes up with the eye of the needle and then down with the point in her non-dominant hand. It looks faster than the over/under with the same hand movement. I’ve played around with it some but you might me better at it than I am if you can even write with your other hand at all because mine left handed writing is the worst I’ve ever seen. Thanks for the video and including the eyelet stitch. Very informative. Stay well.
Great job!!! I have been wanting to get back to cross stitching, it has been a very long time ago since I cross stitched. . Like when I first married and we will have our 41st in July. 😆 I can see that it would be faster. Thank you so much for showing us. 😍
I’m left handed but I still thought I needed my first leg to go left to right, so stitching in hand I stitched sideways. I thought making one x at a time used more thread, but even if it does the calming factor would be so worth it. I’m trying this tomorrow. Thank you.
Wonderful tutorial, Kristie! I’m a lefty too and stitch in hand. I have always made my first cross lower left to upper right and I sort of stitch as I write with my wrist bent and fingers pointed downward. Awkward looking for sure and hard on my wrist! I think I will let my inner lefty-ness come out and try your direction and see how that works for me.
I am new to cross stitch and as another left handed person. Thank you for the great tutorial! I make my x’s in the same order you do and watching other videos I thought I was doing it incorrectly. I tried to do it the other way but it did not feel natural.
Thank you for a great tutorial Kristi! I need to try your method, I'm sure the sewing method is faster...I'm just not sure if I can wrap my old brain around it. I definitely need to try it. Can you please show how you start & end your threads? Enjoyed your video!
I stitch this way, too. Great job filming:) You confirmed my suspicions - I am right handed but stitch with the same top leg direction as you. I never realized most people do it the other way - lol. I think I'm going to go paint my nails bright pink now - love the color! xoxo
Love your video. I am left handed too and have been searching for left handed tutorials. It is so hard to find left handed instructions and tips. Switching stitches from a right handed lesson to a left handed stitch approach has slowed down my stitching progress. Your comment during your right handed approach , it is so hard to do right handed stitching, is exactly how I feel. Right handed approach is so hard to do left handed!! Do you have any more left handed stitching tips and videos?
Love your stitching and your quilts are beautiful. Thanks for sharing. May I ask where you got the 3 tier stand shown at the beginning of your videos. I love the look.
i love stitching in hand and totally agree with the feeling you get BUT i learned in a hoop.... my question is where do you put all the extra fabric when doing a large project
Thank you so much for this video! Now it makes sense to me. Can I ask how do you go back from left to right if you are a right-handed stitcher? I can’t seem to visualize it (!)
Thank you for this great demonstration.. I’m wanting to get back into cross-stitch but have only stitched on 14-count Aida and want to try some finer fabric. What would you recommend I begin with? I’m trying to understand the “1 over 2” etc language! Thank you , Suzette
I'm left handed, too. I finally had the chance to try your method for stitching in hand. What a game changer. Thanks so much for showing this.
I have been stitching for over 20 years and have never tried to stitch in hand. Now that you have shown me this I may very well try it now. Thank you for showing this.

This is the first left handed stitch in hand video I have found, and it has helped me so much! Thank you!!

I’m so going to have to learn this sewing in hand. Thank you so much for taking the time to teach us this method.
Excellent video! I love that you show stitching left and right handed. :)
Hi Christie,

Thank you so much! I am a lefty too and I always appreciate seeing other methods of stitching.
It is because of Kristie and her help with stitching in had this way that I ADORE cross stitch today. Thank you!!
Loved this, thank you so much.

OMG! This is the best demonstration of sewing in hand that I've seen. Great job! I can't wait to try. It looked so complicated on other videos.😁

I just watched and followed!! You’re so lovely!! Thanks for your visit!
Thank you s video. I am also left handed so it's nice to see another lefty stitching. Nice to see you stitching in both directions too.
🌷🌷 Your way looks so fluid! I'm going to change my starting corner (for the cross stitch) on my next project. Thank you for the tips, Kristie. 🌷🌷
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I found it very helpful. Beautiful stitching with either hand!
Thank you so much for this, finally a person, doing cross stitch and teaching this technique, this means a lot. 🪡🧵
I’m definitely going to try this stitching. Thanks so much for teaching us.

You are so fast stitching that I want to stitch in hand, too. I tried it once and gave up. You have given me the confidence to try again.
Thank you.
Great tutorial. I really appreciated the way you shared this method, specially that you did right handed when that isn’t natural for you.
I`m right handed and I cross my `x`s the same as you! Thank you for such a great tutorial for stitching in hand
Great tutorial! You have such a calming voice! 🧵
I tried this tonight & omgoodness it’s so much quicker and my stitches lay so pretty. Thank you for this video. I passed it onto a friend of mine too. 😍

Thank you so much for this video! Would you mind creating a video showing how you start and end your threads (secure them)?
Thank you! I have been searching for a tutorial for left handed stitching. This was excellent. Please do some more. I would also like to see how you start and finish a thread.
Thank you. I'm left handed too but never tried this way so will definitely try it out.
Lovely stitching, so relaxing to watch. Thanks
I missed seeing your face but hearing your voice was great! Awesome video! So far in my stitching I haven’t ever made an eyelet stitch. I do like stitching in hand. I only use q-snaps on large pieces that have a lot of confetti stitching. Thanks!! 😘😘
Really enjoyed watching this! I am also left-handed & it is so nice seeing a fellow lefty stitch! 😊
Thank you sweet lady! ❤️
This is great!! Thank you for showing the eyelet stitch. I learned something new today. TFS!!! 💙
I am a leftie too...but I stitch with my right hand exactly as you stitch with your right hand. I can use a hoop at times, but I still use the sewing method even with the hoop. Going in and out really bothers my right shoulder. Thank you for the video!

Great video with wonderful close up views!!!!!
You make it look so relaxing
Thank you. Interesting to see how everyone stitches
Thank you for doing this, Kristie! I really need to keep tryuntil it becomes less of a "concentration" thing and more mindless.
I’m definitely going to learn how to do this😀 Ty So Much for the Great tutorial 🌻
Stay well.
You make this look easy
Fantastic video Kristie! Thank you so much...
Thank you for sharing. I’ve been wanting to learn this!
O-M-G! Just decided to relook at this video and I am stitching in hand!!!!!! Thank you for a wonderful video Friend! ❤️
That makes me so happy!!
Thank you.
I like your method, I am going to try this out.
Thank you for the great demo - so much easier - Thanks!!!!!
After this video, I'm definitely going to try to stitch in hand. It is soooo much faster!!! Thank you for your video.
Great to hear from you my friend. Great job explaining.
I’m left handed too so thanks, I’d really like to try in hand.
I loved this tutorial....thank you!
I stitch this way, too. Great job filming:) You confirmed my suspicions - I am right handed but stitch with the same top leg direction as you. I never realized most people do it the other way - lol. I think I'm going to go paint my nails bright pink now - love the color! xoxo
Thank you my sweet friend!!! Stitching in hand is the best! I haven’t painted my fingernails in months, it was fun!!
Great information thanks for sharing
Love your video. I am left handed too and have been searching for left handed tutorials. It is so hard to find left handed instructions and tips. Switching stitches from a right handed lesson to a left handed stitch approach has slowed down my stitching progress. Your comment during your right handed approach , it is so hard to do right handed stitching, is exactly how I feel. Right handed approach is so hard to do left handed!! Do you have any more left handed stitching tips and videos?
Great video. Thank you so much!!!!
Thank you, very helpful.
Thank you for sharing!!
My X's go the same way, so good to watch a video of the sewing method with the X's the same lol, so thanks.
I’m a newbie, so this was very informative.
Love your stitching and your quilts are beautiful. Thanks for sharing. May I ask where you got the 3 tier stand shown at the beginning of your videos. I love the look.
Hi there! I think i found the three tier at Hobby Lobby.
Its good to see a lefty working on cross stitch what fabric are you using please.
I like this way better . I'm going to try it.
Thank you. This was very helpful.
i love stitching in hand and totally agree with the feeling you get BUT i learned in a hoop.... my question is where do you put all the extra fabric when doing a large project
Thank you! I just roll it up and hold it
Thank you, Thank you I am left handed and this was so helpful. I was afraid I was crossing my x's wrong.
Great video 😄
Your nails look great btw. 😘
This is a great video the first I found for left hand could you show us how you go down?
Thank you so much for this video! Now it makes sense to me. Can I ask how do you go back from left to right if you are a right-handed stitcher? I can’t seem to visualize it (!)
Thank you for this great demonstration.. I’m wanting to get back into cross-stitch but have only stitched on 14-count Aida and want to try some finer fabric. What would you recommend I begin with? I’m trying to understand the “1 over 2” etc language! Thank you , Suzette
