What surprised me the most was I think a lot of us were expecting some high level technique stuff instead it was refining the basics and lizard walking. Even from a high level advanced practice it’s always about the basics! OSS!
Lizard Steps!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really look forward to these videos every year.
I was expecting a "Hey guys, it's ya boi Yusuke!"
🤣🤣🤣
That car analogy was incredible. Dude. Great details every time. Thanks!
Haha, thanks! It just popped up in my head as I was editing.
@@KarateDojowaKu It was great, dude. Also, I sent you an email about maybe being a guest on my podcast!
Love these videos great break downs helps those of us who train alone also love the humility you show when being taught by the teacher wearing a white belt shows why you are there
Thanks so much for enjoying this video. It really means a lot for me!
@@KarateDojowaKu Instantly using that white belt was a surprise for me and I deeply respected it !!!!!
Learning from a master must be a great honor !!!
Been watching you for a while now really enjoy your concise explanation . One of my friends here in Georgia USA has Shimabukuro Sensei here this week I will be attending the training since I am Shotokan Yondan I was invited. I am extremely honored for this opportunity. Keep up the great work I am sure your students are learning well the true essence of karate.
Oh, nice! He's a great person!
when I teach the hip before arm style of punching, I like to hold my students hand back(hikite position) then have them move their hip forward and then I let go of their hand and it SLINGSHOTs forward. really gets the idea and purpose across easily. ^_^ thank you for all your insightful and high quality videos!
That's amazing! You are a very skilled teacher.
Aloha from Hawaii thank you for the informative information and knowledge from Higa sensei.:)
Thanks for sharing. I will be looking forward to the upcoming episodes in this series.
Thank you!!! Which tip from this video do you think you can try out from tomorrow?
Dear Mr. Yusuke, Having seen it twice, my deepest admiration to the old sensei for his natural ways of hitting (starting wtih hips first) an walking like in the street, the way I have read from Mamoto Musashi´s Go rin no sho on movements, and saw the Ninja way of walking, It dawned on me. Many thanks and good healt to youj all. Paul.68, retired instructor of Goju-ryu Karate.
Thank you Paul! I hope you can give it a try as well!
This is your best episode yet. Thank you so much for sharing. I think that you are onto something here. Work with the masters and then explain an important aspect/technique in greater detail and at greater depth. Your explanations are really, really good and very useful. I imagine this season will be hugely successful and a treasure trove for all those who strive for a deeper understanding. Very best, Oliver.
Thanks, Oliver. Yes, I do feel great changes in my movements. More episodes to come!
7:00 this concept exist in boxing it’s called the Snap. You don’t just stop the punch you pull it back as fast as you can.
I too started off with Shotokan that Im thankfull for my style now is very simular to Higa Sensei's it was so hard to break away from neatness into relaxing and extending the power of the techniques to become more deadly effective ..welcome aboard

@@KarateDojowaKu I am trying to unsink my hips from my punches!!!!
I noticed how relaxed your fists were .... It shocked me how loose it was without tension.....
Sensei why is it important to not have a tight fist in this instance? I have a habit of being tense.....

@@tarkajedi3331 When your fist is relaxed, you can become aware/feel how heavy your arm actually is. Punching with such realization is going to boost up the resulting power in your movements. Does this make sense?
@@KarateDojowaKu Yes - Thank you Sensei very much I will try to be more relaxed. I think I have built up a habit of tensing up.
Is this common in Dojo's around the world?

Oh my gosh 😮 Incredible! It is 100% true: BIOMECHANICS is the glue that holds ALL martial arts. I was lucky enough to be invited as a "close student" (basically uchi deshi) here in my country to a Chinese community who were serious practitioners of Tai Chi Chuan/Taijiquan. This was definitely not the one practiced in wellness centers and they don't invite just anyone in. We practiced "Yang" style (equivalent in many ways to Shotokan because of its wide, circular form compared with the other styles, as well being the largest style). From listening and looking at sensei here, how he moves from his hips, to how loose one's shoulders should be, is exactly how I was taught. It took me around 5 years to "de-program" my body from being hard from practicing Tae Kwon Do, to being "relaxed" but NOT soft.
"Kime" in Chinese internal arts ("neigong") is called "fa jing" (deep penetrating force). Bruce Lee's 1" punch is a classic example of this.
Amazing similarity :)
How to strike as "one integrated whole" body unit behind the fist is to RELAX (again, NOT soft).
congrats on a great teacher🎉
Thanks! Did you find any interesting points?
awesome content! I just started karate a couple weeks ago. I have practice twice a week. I am finding a love for it.
Wow! Amazing! I hope you can look back at this video a couple months in the future too. I'm sure you'll get a different perspective on it.
At the 7 min mark, that explanation is similar to the shorin ryu is a hip orientated style, all the small or large motions is to put power and speed into the kihon, bunkai, kata, kumite ect, but that’s like seeing my Kaicho train us all over again! Very nice yusuke, love to come
Train with you in Japan one day. 🇦🇺
I see! Love to train with you too!
Well this is Shorin Ryu so that would make sense...
oohh the taekwondo steping side kick or skipping sidekick. has a similar philsophy as that lizard walk!. ill have t learn the lizard walk too!
Could you tell me how it's similar? I'm very interested!
@@KarateDojowaKu its not 1 for 1 the same expect foot positioning. but the Why we do it is the same. why. because we want to move forward.while maintaning striking distance . + having the ability to keep going
. A hopping step sidekick ?( short stepping sidekick or short
skipping sidekick .. different names same kick) . both feet slide forward. before you execute the kick. Then if they move away. you can hop again to get back into range. there are more advanced options for additional attacking potentials.
like if they turn to your back side. you can throw a front stepping hook kick
. if they step to your front side You can round house them.
qwill it be powerful no. but catching them by suprise leads to great results. they cant deal with such a versatile offense 9 out og 10 times i catch expeirenced black belts with these kicks.
they are stuck in the same mind set 1 step forward/ back./side then react.
the relentless assault constantly pushing .. thats the philosophy sensei is teaching ! .
ok the longer version of this is .
the Long skpping sidekick or long stepping side kick..
involves sliding your foot around the back of your lead foot. you have several options. depending on range.
1 in range. throw kick. need alittle extra range. hop forward as you cross your back foot around the lead foot.
2 extra range. hop forward with both feet. then slide in as stated earlier.
3 do they turn? dont need to side kick you can throw round kicks or hook kicks depending on which way they turn.
4 need even more range? repeat any or all steps as needed . they cannot back peddle faster than you can move forward while always ready to strike. from 180 degrees infront of you.
im short only 5.6 and i catch 6 feet 6 inch black belt guys all the time with my kicks.
here is a video tutorial of it. all be it a more general basic explaination without the extra i threw in.

Higa Senseis' knowledge and understanding of biomechanics and movement sequencing and synchronization (obviously he doesn't think of it like that, but for precision of language I use these three terms) is absolutely unreal.
Reminds me of when I joined jujitsu, I had done karate for years and was so easily picked apart, shows how styles vary so much.
I only an orange belt in karate right now, but I’m trying to learn as much as I can from your channel. Thank you for the banki “use this kata on the street “ videos! Application is everything!
Good to see you put on a white belt. 🙏
This is some of the best karate I've ever seen 👏 . Ex shuri Ryu student.
Thanks! Which part was your favorite?
Lizard walking for sure. And who doesn't like night karate.
Great video, Yusuke! Its very interesting how you're making the points regarding adopting the looser movements into your Shotokan practice. I've experienced the opposite, adopting my various martial arts background into the Shotokan style of karate and trying to adapt to the stiffer and longer style. I've been using the smaller and faster footwork for most of my martial arts career and you describe the blitz style of punching around the 12:48 mark.
Interesting! I think the balance between tightening and relaxation, from what I understand currently, is around 1:9, only tightening up when starting the movement, and ending the movement. What do you thin?
@@KarateDojowaKu
From how I understood it, this is considered kime? To tense at the right moment and relax in between to create a whip like effect. Holding tension for too long will also tire you out quickly. You'll notice this when sparring. Would this be what you're referring to?
@@2wulfmartialarts657 That's exactly it!
in our dojo we don't do IKF footwork we do the step walk Higa sensai taught you. it's more effective this way for position changes. for ex: use the step walk to go to right shoulder position instead of jumping to position. more power that way and that's most people's blind spots
Nice! Where is your dojo located?
@@KarateDojowaKu In NJ. Grandmaster was a direct student of Mas Oyama and studied Shotokan as well as Goju Ryu and Shito-Ryu

Great video Yusuke! Looking forward to seeing what new things we can learn from you and Higa sensei.
Ive tried the lizard walk before, it feels strange at first, but I think its a useful addition to my training.
Thanks! Where did you hear about this lizard walking?
@@KarateDojowaKu I have a friend that does animal flow workouts. (I know it sounds strange). It takes coordination of your lims to another level. I've tried it in a boxing workout before, trying to punch and walk at the same time, and here is where you see it's utility. It's not easy.
@@Lynxtpm Wow! That's amazing!
I think the footwork is fantastic! I practice Goju-Ryu, and the hip movement and staying relaxed are both exteemely important, especially in a sparring situation. I learned a lot from this video about how to improve power delivery with hip rotation assisted by optimized footwork!

Taekwondo is, after all, a Korean style of Karate. I would even call it “Koryo-ryu Karate.”
Thank you so much for sharing this with us. Higa sensei was very memorable from your last Okinawa trip. He seems like the kind of teacher that any martial artist would benefit from spending time with.
Oh yes, I agree! Which tip from this video do you think you can try out from tomorrow?
@@KarateDojowaKu I think the "Moving flawlessly" one is what I would want to try. It seems similar to a boxing technique sometimes called the Fitzsimmons Shift. It seems like a good way to avoid being stationary in front of your opponent.
@@Lmolina90 I see! Thanks for the answer!
Loved making karate “every day life thing!” One of my baguaquan teachers also taught me that, in the context of body structure and circle walking. Baguaquan movements are not just for practicing at class. They are for everyday living( although you wouldn’t emphasize the extreme body structures and high and low postures which are practiced in training ).
I like his footwork. It looks and feels light. We were asked to punch first before the legs move. That's so hard I see everyone struggle with it. Can't wait to see more
Thanks!
Interesting and nice video! You can clearly see the changes in the punshes right away! Good work!
Im curious. Did you ever learn Sam Chien? This helps alot with "relaxing" or better spoken realeasing unneeded tansion while executing punshes and blocks.
I've never tried it before..do you have any videos you recommend?
@@KarateDojowaKu Ahhhh okay men. mhm there are many styles who practise sam chien. i would say checking out the white cranse style or 5 Ancestors Fist or Wuzu quan sam chien should be as closest to the roots of the karate one.
@@fabianseidich2416 Thanks!
@@KarateDojowaKu no worrries no worries :) we sit all in the same boat when we try to level up our skills of releasing and "relaxing"
At 9:00 this is similar to golf swing. They call this X factor
That's exactly it!
I'm curious if this idea was how we ended up ending with square hips in the punch?
You're on to a very good point...
The car suddenly stopping is a very good analogy for the punch. However it is slightly incorrect. A sudden stop does not cause acceleration. Rather the objects inside the car experience constant velocity until they decelerate to zero velocity either by the seat belt or by the windshield (if you're not wearing a seat belt). When you suddenly stop a punch, your bones and joints want to keep going in the direction they were travelling (inertia) until they are decelerated to a stop by ligaments, tendons and muscles like a seat belt does. This deceleration is very quick causing a snappy feeling and this creates the illusion of a powerful punch. To generate the most power at impact it's probably best to try to punch through the target.
Enjoying the videos still!
Wooow. I Got really surprised about Master Sensei.
My dream is to go 2 Japan in a near year...looks wonderful places ❤
Hard to say if someone is the deadliest, but he’s a true master. Just like Morio Higgaonna

That punch into your ribcage at the start from last time really got to me. I just broke a rib from a mawashi geri into my chest and it didn't feel that strong at impact. I think that nasty punch, were it gone a bit more to the side, could have easily fractured a rib... :O
Wonderful video as usual, but I don't understand the difference in the moving forward then punching. How is the stepping different? Thank you.
It's like what they look for in kata. Head movement, feet/hip movement, then upper body movement.
Reminds of Egami Sensei a bit
Do you have any videos of him?
Wonderful…
The steps is close to Chinese baguazhnag training 八卦掌
Sensei,
I noticed, particularly while you were doing the kata near the end, that you actually open your hands after every punch. I understand that relaxation between actions is important, but do you really mean to open your hands like that? I feel like that's too much. Your hands are no longer "ready" to react to your opponent, and loose fingers get broken. Can you comment? Thanks.
Thanks for the question. I thought the same too, but it is possible to practice getting your fist ready from it being completely relaxed to it being tight during the impact. Of course, it is easier to keep the fist somewhat tight and ready at all times, but once you pick up the skill to instantly make the tight fist, all you have to do is to stay mentally ready. Does this make sense?
Hey, I live in Japan and while looking for karate dojos I found that they are very expensive and very few hours? Most places have a 11000 ish yen 入会金 and 4000 yen for 1 hour a week? So once a week for 1 hour, or a 2 hour lesson and 8000 monthly fee. Why is the training only once a week and so expensive? Is it normal or am I looking at the wrong places?
I think that is a bit above average!
Togare Ake could be used really well for Gedan Mawashi Geri. It would be a similar set up to the Muay Thai Low Kick.
I see!
How do you make it so that the opponent doesn't see the kick coming?
@@KarateDojowaKu Simplest way is to set it up with other strikes like Kizami Tsuki/Jab. For Muay Thai the step is more like jumping into it but either way the idea is to step of like and with your pointed out the same way as with togare ake since that opens up the hips for the kick removing time of the pivot. With Togare Ake I imagine it's probably even sneakier since it uses Karate's more gliding footwork.
@@KarateDojowaKu Maybe you could collaborate with Yasuhiro Kido or a Shin-Karate/Glove Karate Dojo to explore this. I think it would be an interesting video.
In kick boxing training as a teenager my instructor taught the same thing about punching , that it creates a more damaging impact 7:01

I don't understand the constant training for striking more forcefully. Wouldn't it be more important just to concenctrate on parrying techniques , accuracy, movement, strategy etc actual skills you need in combat / self defence ? You don't really need to hit that hard the person attacking you.
