HI Sal I'm a Security guard in a very old facility I deal with trespassers all of the time when I find a explorer I'm more worried about there safety I only call the Cops if I need help with a thif or a fighter if you are taking pictures i remind you of the dangers of the property and tell you something like you are lucky I'm the nice guard the ether guards are mean please don't come back
Great fountain. The general decor really speaks to folks my age, I suspect. The announcements are brilliant. Kyle thinks he's in a Dirty Harry movie, wotta maroon. Also, the Help Wanted sign at the end is ** chef's kiss **

God, this is a flashback and a half. went to IUP, so that drive up. hell, I've walked to that mall, then around it to wait for a movie showtime so many times, and there was a killer arcade that use to be there. that pizza place is great, and there was a great hibachi/sushi place called the Shinobi. the K mart bathroom had a gloryhole for a while, creeply enough.
That is a great time capsule of a 70s mall . I once had a manager , a smart lady at JCP in the 80s say some people should never be put in a position of authority. That’s always stuck with me . Obviously “Kyle” was one of those people and not an example of most security . Sad
They're mostly afraid people are trying to case the joint, I suppose. Also, some of the passersby might find it a nuisance and be angry about getting filmed.
I think for the dead ones (and even the living ones) so thieves can't see anything relating to the layout, but I think, for the dead malls, that's just pure crap there because I doubt anyone would steal from such a barren place. Dead malls on the other hand, I feel they don't want anyone filming it because they don't want anyone to see their failure. (Pride and Vanity) If I owned one, I would allow filming in the main areas, the for the occupied stores it's up to their management. The video that results from it may bring in more tenants, instead of scare them away. (also would bring more staff like maintenance.) Alas, that isn't the case though because when mall owners get enough money, it just becomes poison to the mall and kills it a majority of the time. They really should be putting it back into the care for the mall. (I saw that one green looking spot (must be algae) on the floor in one of the seating areas)
Any faults the camera finds might be used against them in a court case. Any risk the mall can take to avoid being sued is a worthwhile one, even if nothing comes of the footage.
Having been in the Great Gulag of Indiana County in the past, I can only say that the mall security cop pretty much summed up the local business mindset.
8:20 That "No pictures" voiceover reminded me of the "NO POMEGRANATES!" video that went viral a couple of years ago. (It went viral because people took it out of context)
This is awesome Sal! I just discovered your channel. This video brought back memories as I attended IUP from 1984-1989. Indiana Mall was a staple. I remember seeing "Dead Poets Society" at the theatre there. Thank you so much!
I was here during the christmas season last year, and they had a choir set up. That was pretty much the only thing going on in the mall, alongside a model railway that had set up in one of the inline tenants. A couple of interesting local tenants in Indiana, glad I got to hear more about it!
That wall at 12:08 is what's left of an old York Steak House location. I remember my grandparents dragging me to the location in Westview Mall on 40 when I was a kid in the 70's.
Back to watch again thanks to the short! I totally forgot to comment years ago about that amazing York Steakhouse facade you showed a few times in the video. I grew up with York at the Brunswick Sqaure Mall in East Brunswick, NJ. 🎉🎉🎉 It’s been about 20 years since I have been to this mall. I doubt I will get back.
Poor Kyle the mall cop. I bet he cried when he had to turn in that one size too big polo shirt, knowing he'll never again feel that godlike power like he had as an Indiana Mall First Responder. A true hero. A first ballot inductee into the Indiana Pennsylvania Retail Hall of Fame. All hail the Kyle !!

Sal, I was just up in the Southern Tier of New York. Binghamton has three places of interest that figured prominently in my childhood: the Oakdale Mall (rapidly dying), the Metrocenter Mall downtown (has to be dead but it's still standing), and a massive standalone downtown Boscovs (in a building that dates back to the early 20th century as a Fowler's). Figured it may be a trio that would interest you. Not sure how much longer the mall will be around and I'm shocked that Boscovs still exists today.
I live by that mall, man I was there once. Mall was so sad. Pretty cool you cover malls in Pa. they where a big part of my childhood. Especially century 3 and uniontown mall.
That's problem sal, you get power hungry idiot's in those positions sometimes. They think they can violate people's rights because there security. I've always found the best strategy is to not engage. Never tell them anything, deny you were doing anything. Ask for their name and who they work for, etc. Always remember its more than their job is worth to actually do anything and police response time in rural areas is abysmal.
Once again Sal, you absolutely KILLED IT with this one!! 👌👌👌👌👌 And I LOVE how you edited in those "ghosts" of that greasy little Paul Blart wannabe. 😂😂😂😂😂
The last day I visited Charlestowne Mall on its final day in 2017(aside from Carson's and Von Maur, never mind Carson's has since closed), I remember being confronted by mall security there. One of the 2 guards was an older guard who was IMO nice, and the other guard was a younger guard(probably like the age of 'Kyle') who was more on the rude side. Who at first warned me about not taking photos, so I played it on the DL and quietly took pics after that. At least when I was kicked out was when I finally had taken all the indoor pics of the mall hallways I wanted, and a la that stupid Indiana Mall guard, he told me the usual threat that if you're seen back inside, police will be called. I had the last laugh that day at that younger guard, since I quietly was taking photos of the exterior after I was kicked out that day. And also quietly went into Carson's and Von Maur, without any issues. :) The guard Kyle at Indiana Mall was on another level(vs. the guard I encountered at Charlestowne), of being rude and being a jerk! And who I remember did that both to Doomie Grunt, besides yourself. It sucks you had to deal with that, but of course any guards like that will never stop any of us from taking photos! Finally you picked the best movie clip yet, since to me I think Mystery Science Theater 3000 could've parodied that movie really well!
It's a Zamias-run mall, I'm not shocked that they 1. hire people like Kyle, 2. pay abysmal rates, and 3. the mall is utterly dead. I grew up with the Johnstown Galleria running the already existing Richland Mall (which is where Richland Town Centre is now) out of business. Since the Richland Mall closed, the Galleria started to go downhill, which is the case with any Zamias property. I had spoken with (and known) several business owners that were tenants in the Galleria, and the common theme is that Zamias' started jacking the rent up to the point where most businesses either chose to ditch, or just couldn't afford to stay at the Galleria. The popular rumor I've always heard was that Zamias had strong mob ties which kept his dead malls still open; now I don't know if that's true or not, but it would make some sense considering the amount of power that him and Ed Cernic had in the area. Whenever Wal Mart moved down to Richland Town Centre around 2002-2003, rumor also had it that they struck a deal with Richland Township where they would deny permits to any other store (*ahem* Target) that would be in direct competition with Walmart...which explains why Walmart is the only option in the Johnstown area.
Sal, it just felt like this particular "mall cop" is the kind of guy that has the "everybody is a crook" mentality quite a lot of security people (and even some store employees and management) exhibit in "poorer neighborhoods", whether it's the people's fault or not. Glad he was shown "the pink slip" and got the good people of Indiana, PA "out of their misery"... PS: Googled about that "Terminator II" (as originally sold as) movie story... Interesting.
So if you ever need an update on this wonderful place, please let me know. This home of Jimmy Stewart is mine as well...and yeah the dated colors, questionable former security and odd decor of this place have a weird home for me...it has also haunted my nightmares for years...great to see you doing history on these places as well. Keep em comin!
Thank you for another wonderful video Sal! I appreciate your work! Also that security gaurd, man...wow that's like Paul Blart mall cop levels of dumb stuff but as you know there are bad apples and he was one of them! Glad you were able to be peaceful when Kyle could not.
10:24 - 11:00 = I remember going to K-Mart in Bismarck, ND back in the 90's with my DAD SIDE Grandparents MY GRANDMA LOVED THE BLUE LIGHT SPECIAL: I just went for the atmosphere of it all and a SLICE OF PEPPERONI PIZZA: MANY TIMES!! It made me laugh inside when the announcement came over the intercom and the IN STORE Little Caesars, DESIGNATED STAGING AREA, would clear out faster than if yelled FIRE IN THE BUILDING!!! It was fun to chat with the people waiting for there spouses to return from THE HUNT as well.... GOOD TIMES!!!
@15:15, he's confronting you in the parking lot after the fact? Instead of worrying about you filming, he better focus on looking for another job . His days working that mall are numbered.
So there isn't much in the mall but most of the candy machines are broken. The train one is the best, don't put quarters in it as it just eats them, turn the knob counter clockwise, then turn it clockwise, and repeat and it just keeps dispensing candy. I still do that there when we go there
i used to work at the Things Remembered kiosk in this mall. and i SPECIFICALLY remember that security guard being creepy towards me every single day that i worked there.
our kiosk was so small that only one person could work in it. and i was full time, so i was there 90% of the time. i remember him coming up to me literally every single day and making me feel super weird.
I loved the aesthetics of this mall. This is why we need to declare structures from the 60s and 70s historic. The original New York Penn Station was only 53 years old when it was demolished, not much older than this mall. Look at what was torn down, look at the monstrosity that replaced it. I would hate to see this space turned into a power center, or even worse, just a Walmart. Once vintage architecture is gone, its gone forever.
I saw that security guard at the mall. Yeah yesterday I was at the Indiana Mall. The water fountain was off. It was sucks. That’s what I saw was turned on.
I just had to deal with a similar kind of person... I was trying to be kind and calm and this guy was so into his own "power", he was relishing every moment of holding it over me... too many people in those kinds of positions are like that.
I hope he got a chance to go there while filming this. I always loved those coin operated TV’s. Unfortunately they closed their mall location now. They moved into the old Pizza House location by IUP and were doing OK until the whole COVID thing. Their new location has been temporarily closed for a while now. Nobody knows if they’ll be reopening or not. If they are out of business, that would be a shame. Great pizza and wonderful owners.
Great vid man... I live in indiana and found this vid very well put together .. next time u go there look in the bathroom stall ima right something down and hope u get it in the next vid .. 💯😂
Oh, our sad mall......There was a big article in the Gazette a few years back promising a "major overhaul" with 4 to 5 new anchor stores coming. We did get a nice new Kohl's in the former Sears space. It is a great addition although it is a very small store and Dunham's was supposed to be coming, what happened with that? Now with JCpenney's bankruptcy, I hope we don't lose that store too. From what I hear it is a profitable location, so hopefully it will stay open. Indiana definitely needs some retail, we are really undeserved for the size of the town and with IUP here, there is no reason what we can't get ample shopping choices.
You'll probably have an adventure here in Connecticut with some dead malls. I'm hearing about Stamford, Meridan, Trumbull and Mitford. Danbury Fair is doing OK for now. It's on the border with New York and at a highway junction. Norwalk is the last mall to be built ever and it's still not complete just half open. It's called the SONO Collection Rumor has it, it will be a huge community center in 5 years or so.
I never understood why security doesn't want you taking pictures at malls. It's a public area accessible to everyone. If anything people like Sal should be welcomed with open arms for creating interest in visiting these malls.
Wow! That sucks! Kyle the Mall Cop reminds me of the City of Provo when they wanted to charge me with Criminal Trespassing for filming a walkthrough of an old movie theater. Problem was...I touched nothing, took nothing, left nothing...just filmed and photographed and left it exactly the way I found it.
I felt like there isn't a lot of the mall's history that's known, since you mainly talked about the anchors the mall had. That means as recently as about 2015 the mall was doing well?
@4:00 the Sci-Fi film Species ripped that scene off lmao , but then again maybe T2 also took some of the ideas from Shocking Dark's Terminator getting blasted by the shotgun , I can see T-1000

What an idiot that "security" guard was. Probably didn't want his wife or husband to see him chatting with some ladies. Anyway, great video Sal! Thank you
I got thrown out of South Coast Plaza for taking still photos of the merry-go-round. No kids on it, just the horses and ornamentation. Security man was so nice about it, he even helped me carry my gear to my car. Very sweet. Lesson learned: never use a tripod in the mall!
Also, I’ve had mall cops demand that they delete my photos, but I only shoot film! Sorry, there’s no way to delete photos on this camera. One guy actually offered to show me how to delete photos on my ancient Minolta, only to realize there was no LCD menu screen.
Mall cop got fired. I got an application to work there as security. Let me know if I should go through with it. Love you all.

I've always found the best strategy is to not engage. Never tell them anything, deny you were doing anything. Ask for their name and who they work for, etc. Always remember its more than their job is worth to actually do anything and police response time in rural areas is abysmal.
"You about to lose yo job cuz you are detainin me fo nuthin!" - Sal to Kyle the bad mall cop
Once again Sal, you absolutely KILLED IT with this one!! 👌👌👌👌👌 And I LOVE how you edited in those "ghosts" of that greasy little Paul Blart wannabe. 😂😂😂😂😂
I'll be at work when released. I'll see it at 11:00 PM. Looking forward to it
The last day I visited Charlestowne Mall on its final day in 2017(aside from Carson's and Von Maur, never mind Carson's has since closed), I remember being confronted by mall security there. :)
The guard Kyle at Indiana Mall was on another level(vs. the guard I encountered at Charlestowne), of being rude and being a jerk!
You are good reviewer of these malls Sal, I enjoyed these videos.
There is a small roller rink in it now :)! It occupies two vacancies, i think.
Thank you for another wonderful video Sal! I appreciate your work! Also that security gaurd, man...wow that's like Paul Blart mall cop levels of dumb stuff but as you know there are bad apples and he was one of them! Glad you were able to be peaceful when Kyle could not.
10:24 - 11:00 = I remember going to K-Mart in Bismarck, ND back in the 90's with my DAD SIDE Grandparents
MY GRANDMA LOVED THE BLUE LIGHT SPECIAL: I just went for the atmosphere of it all
and a SLICE OF PEPPERONI PIZZA: MANY TIMES!!
It made me laugh inside when the announcement came over the intercom and the IN STORE
Little Caesars, DESIGNATED STAGING AREA, would clear out faster than if yelled FIRE IN
THE BUILDING!!! It was fun to chat with the people waiting for there spouses to return from
THE HUNT as well.... GOOD TIMES!!!
Do the outer jets of that fountain come on anymore? I always enjoyed seeing mall fountains go thru various phases
This is literally my local mall... I've never seen mall security there before.... 😂
Consider yourself fortunate. They’re awful.
Few years late but same. Been going all my life, never have seen any security, never had any issue with taking pictures
Your video editing and script treatment on the gremlin security guard was brilliant.
Can never mistake a classic 80s/90s Sear anchorfront.
I still do that there when we go there
Kyle is now haunting my dreams. Thanks.
i used to work at the Things Remembered kiosk in this mall. and i SPECIFICALLY remember that security guard being creepy towards me every single day that i worked there.
our kiosk was so small that only one person could work in it. and i was full time, so i was there 90% of the time. i remember him coming up to me literally every single day and making me feel super weird.
The JC Penney at Fingerlakes Mall is one of the stores that is closing.
Thank you for another great video.

@@emirvmendoza i was just joking about stealing your quote lol
I saw that security guard at the mall. Yeah yesterday I was at the Indiana Mall. The water fountain was off. It was sucks. That’s what I saw was turned on.
Lololol the ending is f’ing priceless
That mall cop was such a prick lol
Lol ik XD
Haha whatever, the guy got fired and I got my footage. Win win.
Hell yea!
I just had to deal with a similar kind of person... I was trying to be kind and calm and this guy was so into his own "power", he was relishing every moment of holding it over me... too many people in those kinds of positions are like that.
Did you go into Capri Pizza? They have little coin operated TVs in their booths. I can send a picture if you didn't get to see them.
The mall in Tyler Texas was doing well in 2019 and then COVID happened and now it’s a nearly dead mall
Kyle probably had the Fountain drained to deter future shoppers from using cameras.
It's called the SONO Collection
Rumor has it, it will be a huge community center in 5 years or so.
I never understood why security doesn't want you taking pictures at malls. It's a public area accessible to everyone. If anything people like Sal should be welcomed with open arms for creating interest in visiting these malls.
14:53 as a mall security guard, I couldn't agree more. people like this give security guards a bad name. please understand it's not all of us.
Absolutely. I respect you guys for what you do
@@sal I respect what you do too, I wish I had that level of skill to take a snapshot of things in history to be looked back on
Omgeeee,,Sal...🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 But the application....🤣👍
I think Sal has more fun editing the movies than the malls
That movie in the beginning looks good
2:26 - 5:55 = Ah, 80's Limburger, MY FAVORITE!!
21:46 On that day, humanity received a grim reminder.
Wow!
Gave you a "thumbs up" Sal for a great head of hair!!!
I felt like there isn't a lot of the mall's history that's known, since you mainly talked about the anchors the mall had. That means as recently as about 2015 the mall was doing well?
Hilarious. You should use his image to close out your videos or sneak his picture into your videos just to see if he can be spotted. So funny.
@4:00 the Sci-Fi film Species ripped that scene off lmao , but then again maybe T2 also took some of the ideas from Shocking Dark's Terminator getting blasted by the shotgun , I can see T-1000
Hit that Like button upon arrival here, and show Sal your dedication to his Channel, A like followed up with a genuine comment, goes a long way for us explorer creators, Thanks Y'all
Great job on the video Sal.
What an idiot that "security" guard was. Probably didn't want his wife or husband to see him chatting with some ladies. Anyway, great video Sal! Thank you
Off Topic - Indiana PA's best known citizen was probably actor James Stewart. Interesting video!
I live in elkhart Indiana and i have a local mall thats still packed
I got thrown out of South Coast Plaza for taking still photos of the merry-go-round. No kids on it, just the horses and ornamentation. Security man was so nice about it, he even helped me carry my gear to my car. Very sweet. Lesson learned: never use a tripod in the mall!
Also, I’ve had mall cops demand that they delete my photos, but I only shoot film! Sorry, there’s no way to delete photos on this camera. One guy actually offered to show me how to delete photos on my ancient Minolta, only to realize there was no LCD menu screen.
Meanwhile, somewhere in the mall, there's an opportunity to shoplift.....
That movie needs the Rifftrax treatment.
