  • DEAD MALL: Indiana Mall - Indiana, PA. As we celebrate reaching 40,000 subscribers on RUclips, I thought I would take us back to one of the first malls I ever filmed. Back in January 2018, I uploaded a video from here and showed how it looked then. At the time, Sears and Bon-Ton were both open. The old Kmart was closed up and nothing was using the space at the time. Today, both Sears and Bon-Ton are long gone. They closed in 2018 months apart. Since then the Bon-Ton remains empty while the Sears has been partially repurposed to house Harbor Freight and Kohl's. The old Kmart is currently being used by Spirit Halloween for a couple of months. For the rest of the mall, it was just as dead as it was on my original visit. Aesthetically, this mall will definitely catch your eye and make you feel like you just took a step back in time... especially if you can appreciate vintage aesthetics. Anyway, hope you enjoy our 2021 revisit tour of Indiana Mall!
Here is our original video from January 2018 here:

I've lived in Indiana all my life good and bad town you can say.... I'm 18 so the mall was always a so called dead mall for me but I still had great times and memories inside. All the stores are gone but the Moive theater is still open.. My dad and I go to the movies alot and it's kinda like having your own less its a new movie that's really popular like an avengers film or so on..... but the Mall has actually just been put up for sale and it's pretty cheap for how well the building is and where it is located...... I've always wanted to buy said mall and turn it into luxury apartments or throw some restaurants into it then it would do very well and wouldn't be on youtube as a dead mall 🙃... anyways good video makes me think alot about my town and my goals 💯✌

This mall had a small statue of actor Jimmy Stewart. He was very popular 🎭 mostly 1930s to 1970s. Stewart was a WW2 USAF(Army Air Corps) veteran. Indiana had a big version of the Stewart display downtown. Along with a museum. 🎬

This is my hometown. I went to school here and eventually a couple years at the local college IUP. It's still SOMEWHAT openish. In 1999 The band Jackyl played here in the parking lot and growing us I used to get in fights occasionally back in the day while hanging out with my friends as a teenager. That Harbor Frieght just opened up not too long ago AND when I recently gt my inheritance, I bought a house first, BUT I went to buy some tools and equipment at Harbor Freight and spent approximately 6 grand there within a week on everything purchased. This town is also the birthplace of Jimmy Stewart, the legendary actor who was the main character in many Hollywood classics.
There used to be a handicapped man, named Geno, who was in his 50's by time it was the 90s. He would be there all day and have a little red wagon which he would cart his shoe shine kit and offer shoe shines to shoppers passing by. I believe he made a living there.
I was born in 79, so this place was my life. I was a lid there who enjoyed my Orange Julius and saw Transformers the movie in 1986. There were 2 arcades, "Aladdin's Castle" was first in the 80's and in the 90's it was a place called "Pocket Change". There was an Electronic Boutique there and I purchased my first CD Rom and Sound Card from there. I even got my first PC from the Sears in 1993, an IBM PS1.
I could go 9n because I was a local musician and a "townie"... It comes to Indiana PA or Indiana County or the history of the people here and where and what has went on, and a few other things that happen today, I'm your guy. I used to do RUclips back in the day, and there WAS a rumor that the creator of RUclips went to college at IUP here, but I can't confirm it OR deny it.
There used to be somewhat of a music scene here, which I was heavily active in back in the day. We used to have a place, The Cage, and have open Mic on Friday and Saturday nights from an old former former fallout shelter that is located under the Indiana Movie Theater on Philadelphia Street. Sometimes we would have local and touring independent acts perform there.
I could go on, but that's just some of the story here. I don't live in the borough anymore, but it's only a 10 to 15 minute drive for me. There used to be so much here with things happening, but it's relatively calm and boring these days if you ask me.

Thanks for taking me back! I just subbed and look forward to seeing more of Indiana PA! I went to college in the area and this was a very busy mall in the late 90's/early 00's - I worked at one of the telemarketing companies they had there next to the (former) Bonton, which is Ziggy's in your video. Across from Spirit Halloween was Capri pizza, and I remember their booths had little B&W tv's you could watch for $0.25/10 mins, just enough to get some TV time in during a break. Gamestop, AT&T, an (actual) arcade. Why not do a walk through of Philadelphia Street? Around Christmas time, they decorate the main street to resemble It's a Wonderful life! at 16:37, those signed used to sit on a taller pedestal. When you approach the mall from Rt. 286, you would see that in the distance.

There is supposed to be a Dunham's Sports replacing Bon-Ton, I assume it is still coming, doesn't look like any activity there yet. Indiana Kohls is quite unique. I was chatting with the manager and she said that the Indiana store is a prototype and is the only one like it in the entire chain. Corporate officials visit the store are pleased with the smaller format and it is doing very well. Future stores will be built much like this one. Personally I think they should have taken the entire Sears space and offered more merchandise. There is a small portion of Sears closed off and is sitting empty, doesn't make sense to me. Congrats on your milestone Wallie! I really enjoy your productions and do a great job! Keep those cameras rolling and stay awesome!

I have some memories of this mall, that I hadn't thought of in at least a decade- Particularly involving the fountain. It was 2008 or 2009, and I got suckered into moving ten hours away and attending the for-profit tech school, Wyotech, located like 20 miles south, in Blairsville. Lost all the money my parents saved up for college there. I took out no loans, but that left me with $3000 to live to 9 months (rent-free, luckily). I made a local friend named Travis, who lived between the two locations in Homer City. We used to go up to the Indiana mall, steal shit, and collect as much change as we could from the fountain, then go to McDonald's and have a Dollar Menu feast. Grabbing change from the fountain was of questionable morality, but there was no sign indicating it was to be donated. Security would come and mean mug us until we wandered off, then we'd go back. Never made less than $12, but some nights over $20. Life was rough back then.
I remember you could also jimmy the candy machines just right to get some free Bonz or whatever they were. The local college kids were unfriendly, and the entire place was just so impoverished, and always overcast and gray. Glad to leave that place and never return. It's a trip seeing it again.

I knew a girl when I went to Indiana University who spent lots of time at this mall on the weekends, but this is a bit unusual… she usually would go to the mall BAREFOOT!

I would call Simon Properties cookie-cutter malls.
Hudson Valley Mall in Kingston, NY is more dead than this mall.

I wish they'd quit with the food trucks and focus on, like, actually putting businesses IN the mall.

I worked in Sears, J.C. Penny’s, Chess King, National Record Mart (NRM) and Waldenbooks at various points in my youth / early adulthood. For your sake, get your degree and / or just move on!
