Thanks for sharing the story behind your life saving tattoo. It just so happens that I too nearly took my own life at age 14 due to school bullies, and the story behind your tattoo is uplifting and hope-filled. And the hotline number will help just one more person save their life. Thanks for standing up for a cause you believe in.
I'm sorry to hear you've been down the dark road I've been down. It's awful and no way for anyone to feel. I hope sharing that number does help. Because no one should ever feel so bad that that's the only way out.
Thank you for preserving this…I grew up there and have lots of great memories of that mall. Of course, when it was booming in the 90s that is…sad to see it this way.
I often thought these malls could be refurbished and used as satellite college campuses. You could convert the small stores into department faculty offices and the larger areas into classrooms. I used to teach at a university that did that with a shopping mall. The four movie theatres were converted into lecture halls. The food court was reopened by food services and small stores were converted to offices or a library.
Thanks wallie . And thank you for sharing your personal story and posting the Suicide helpline number that will definitely be a help to people who need it
Sad place, even sadder that someone took their life here. Keep up the hope, life can bring you down from time to time. I really like the vibe of this mall, I hope it will survive somehow.
So sad, I went to this mall when I was a kid and I remember my favorite part was the Orange Julius (so many malls are like this now) I believe it is do to so much online shopping.
I used to live in Chambersburg and would always go to the mall in the early 2000s. The last time I ever went to this mall was when fidget spinners became a craze. Glad to see this documented for memories.
My childhood mall in the 1980’s and early 1990’s. We lived in Greencastle, PA. My mom worked at the Bon-Ton and would later work at a Fashion Bug that was there. I still have fond memories of enjoying this mall in it’s hay day. I visited it in 2014 and got to experience it’s deadness firsthand. I wasn’t surprised.
When I was a young teen I did have those thoughts I pulled myself together cause like you said your story isn’t over yet and it made me a stronger person
I grew up in Chambersburg, I distinctly remember this mall being busy as all hell any day of the week. was really sad to see the decline in real time. A main factor in the decline is the township its in, Greene Township. Greene is a dry township, and many restaurants wanted to move into the mall but they wanted to serve alcohol along with meals, and when the township shot them down they found other locations
For a dying mall, they put a ton of time, money and effort into keeping it in good shape. Every light fixture works and no bulbs are burned out, every ceiling tile is spotless, the parking lot is clean, the floors are clean. It's not easy to keep commercial space looking that clean. They decorate. They are trying.
I never been to this mall but I'm so nostalgic for it. I like that's it's out in the country side it reminds me of the 90's and early 00's so much I can picture going to this mall on a summer day in that era.
Such a shame about this nice looking mall. Seems rural areas are taking a hit. Not a lot of money in rural areas anymore. Bath and Body Works seems to do well in dead malls. Good video.
WOW. It's such a shame beautiful structures like this mall are probably doomed for demolition or needless remodeling and modernization. This place is so incredible, I hope more people capture footage of this place before its gone, or someone saves it. Looking at this place, it seems like a prime location for a music video or something, it has a character about it you just don't find anymore.
Spent many great times there! I remember when they had security guards for kids under age without parents lol. Of course we avoided them like the plague. Such a shame what the does!
I live in the UK and watch a lot of these "dead Mall" videos and also Nick Johnson's videos of run down areas and shocking to see so much wasted property and empty space.
I just went today and the whole mall is closing down and Black Rose leaves the 30th of June 3 days 😢 😢😢😢😢 I heard there turning it into a retirement home but I think it’s wrong have a good day
In Brooklyn New York we did have a dead mall Kings Plaza. It starts to die in the late 80's and early 90's. I don't know when it started to going down hill
I remember going there once in 2001, since my grandfather lived in that area. Even then it didn't seem like much of a mall to me. We had to ask at the info desk where we could have lunch, as the mall didn't have an actual food court, just restaurants scattered here and there.
Wallie. Thanks for another great video. We used to come up often from Hagerstown Md. In the early 2000s it was doing fine, always plenty of shoppers with Sears, Penny's, Bon Ton and Value City. Nice places to eat and most stores filled. I think it had a McCrory's but I could be wrong. Value City was my favorite for good clothing and low prices. There was a nice buffet restaurant across from the cinemas where we often ate before going to the nearby Totem Pole Playhouse. It's only a few miles away from Chambersburg but it seems farther. Maybe they anticipated growth in that direction. Sad to see it like this but who knows. Maybe people will get tired of shopping on a computer someday. I'll take a mall over Amazon any day. Fortunately the Valley Mall in Hagerstown is still doing alright. Even though it lost some big stores over the years Belk moved in and Penney's is hanging in there for now.
Glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah, that's what I mean when I said that because of the town and all the retail and restaurants being in a one area like that, I believe that's what killed this mall off since it's all by itself basically. And yes, I've been to Valley Mall. That place was busy every time I've been there. So, I'm glad that still holds on. It helps its in the epicenter of businesses in town though.
@@WallieB26 I think I mentioned before that you should check out Valley View Farm in Cockeysville MD, just North of Baltimore next Christmas if things open up. It's a garden center that turns into a Christmas store in December.
Everything is not online nowadays, it’s about downsizing. Even though this mall was once very alive, it was always mediocre. Neighborhood malls are dying but the regional ones tend to do very welo
There is a plan in place to move the movie Theater to Norland Ave. It almost happened in 2017 when the lease was renegotiated. The plan is still in place. They want to build a 12 Theater movie complex. Also until recently the township was an alcohol dry town.
Went to college nearby in the early 00. It was always reasonably busy on the weekends but 🦗 during the week. They had a no minors under 16 could be in the mall unescorted policy - to prevent ‘hanging out’ which I found odd for a mall. Lack of food was a pain - pizza, coffee shop, Annie Ann’s and subway were it. I could still ID most old storefronts. 🤓
Still sad to watch their demise. Malls were a large part of Americana and now they are disappearing; I still like visiting malls, but I'm not a millennial.
I haven't been up to that mall since the Sears up there close I just decided to go into the mall one day I noticed the Sears was shutting down and I bought a weight bench out of there still have it to this day and it's still in the box cuz I never put it together but damn I haven't been to that mall in a long time pretty sad to see that one go but I got to make an attempt to get up there one day not that far away
Shippensburg University isn't too far away. When I lived in Shippensburg in the mid/late 90s I would go to this mall. It's the sister mall of the now transformed into a "town center" West Manchester Mall. It was cool to see the original stylized "mall" letters up at the entrance.
Awesome video I agree with you black rose is awesome I went to that one a few times I used to go to the black rose in the Phillipsburg mall all a time do you know if the mall is still open now because I’m thinking about going down soon
I was just checking out some of your old videos I did not watch but this mall is sad because ours is going under too..you should come to Uniontown PA mall I wish you would so I could meet you guys and if u ever do let me know thanks it is sad to see these nice malls going to hell ok
Oh shoot... our local mall, Northfield Square Mall in Bourbonnais, IL, is currently owned by the Namdar Realty Group. Plus, our mall is dying... fast. No anchors, less than 35 businesses, our mall is a goner. But there are plans to redevelop the mall, but I'm not sure about them.
So sad to hear about the suicide 😢, definitely not a way to go 😢. Very dead mall and it's sad to see these malls like this. No food for you. Have a good day and thank you for the hot line very important.
Awesome video, and thank you for sharing your personal story as well. You’re an awesome dude, and I hope to shake your hand one day. If you are ever in the Northern VA area, let me know! Would love to treat you and Kayla at my restaurant someday.
If your ever in north Georgia in dawsonvill there is an abandoned Ryan’s, Wendy’s with a now hiring sign, a Taco Bell, and a krystal. All in the same plaza called Dawson village except for the krystal which is across the street. There is also brand new Burger King in Cumming that is abandoned off of highway 20 and samples rd.There is also an abandoned Pizza Hut on the same exit behind lanier tire and wheel. There also not abandoned but just outside Dahlonega there is a pizza hut classic which is the definition of an 80’s Pizza Hut. Hope you guys stay safe in your travels.
Good find, good find. The music choice is pretty good & I feel like it matches the occasion. How do you manage to video the outside while driving? If I tried to do it, it would be all sorts of messed up.
Thank you. Its difficult sometimes. It sometimes requires me to stop filming for a second or two and put the clips together. It's nice because most malls have a road that circles around it and you're not on the main streets and we're going at a slow speed. I typically keep the camera in one hand out the window and my other on the wheel and focused on the road. It's not the easiest but it works.
I know what I would do if I owned the mall. I would make it into a place where people could live in it and bring in some more stores to make it like a little town of the same name.
I just want to comment on Black Rose Antiques. I have been in several of them one was in Hanover mall. They allow to many junk dealers in to be called an antique mall. I have been into antiques for over 40 year and most of the stuff they sell is yard sales stuff for ridiculous prices.
Hello I was wondering if I could use some of your footage from this video for my student documentary. I’m in college at messiah university. I can give you credit for footage as well.
Lmao. that's where I was born. Used to hang out there all the time. Arcade, comic store, movies, headshop, a Bonanza. . :)
Sad still breaks my heart. America's past. We are the country that buys everything and produces nothing.
Yes because we get it and then send it to China/Mexico etc to make it.
I went to this mall back in 1994 and remember how it was crowded. So sad to see these once popular malls die.
Did you happen to also go to Southgate Mall (not really a "mall" at all, but it was a strip shopping center which included a JCPenney before they moved to this mall in the video)?
Internet killed the shopping mall
Walmart killed it first.@@philipmclaughlin9636

And there goes my childhood. Rotting away and slowing dying painfully. But I’ll always cherish the memories of a better and simpler time there.

Such a shame about this nice looking mall. Seems rural areas are taking a hit. Not a lot of money in rural areas anymore. Bath and Body Works seems to do well in dead malls. Good video.
Agreed, Bath and Body is one of 2 stores still in the Point at Carlisle Plaza, an almost dead mall in Carlisle PA
What would a Wallie B video be without him trying to order from a vacant restaurant?
We’d have a sad video. 🙃.
Exit 20 off Interstate 81 would make a great truck stop. It’s actually in Scotland PA
Great video! Thank you for sharing your story. I know it will help someone out there struggling. Keep going brother, we love you guys!
Great video! I was in that mall a few years ago and I’m surprised it lasted this long, a shame indeed
Great video. Sad. Thanks for filming.
I can’t believe it’s still even open!
I spent many Friday nights playing video games at Aladdin Castle and eating pizza at Brother’s pizza in the 80’s
I love the "80's mall music" intro 🤣
Awesome Video Man! I filmed the JCPenney here a couple months ago.

I can imagine how nice it used to be.
The antique store did have some nice finds. You have to access it from outside entrance. I remember going to the sizzler buffet here once upon a time.
