  • We are delighted to briefly introduce you to Ukraine, a gem of Eastern Europe, rich in diversity and history. Bordered by several countries and the Black and Azov Seas, Ukraine is a historic cultural crossroads. Its capital, kyiv, is one of the oldest cities in Europe, filled with historical monuments.
Since its independence in 1991, Ukraine has faced major challenges, but continues to play a key role on the international stage with a dynamic economy and an expanding technology sector. Ukrainian culture, with its rich traditions and distinctive cuisine, is a testament to the country's authenticity.
Thank you for joining us to explore the history and culture of this fascinating country.
The Cossack State, which can be seen as an embryo of the Ukrainian nation, mainly refers to the Cossack Hetmanate, a political entity formed by Ukrainian Cossacks between the 16th and 18th centuries. This territory developed mainly in the current regions of central and eastern Ukraine.
The Hetmanate was created following the Union of Lublin in 1569, which divided Ukrainian lands between Poland and Lithuania, pushing the Cossacks, previously under Lithuanian protection, to form an autonomous entity to defend their lands against Polish oppression and the Tatar invasions. The Cossacks were organized militarily and socially into regiments and districts headed by a Hetman, who was their supreme leader.
Over time, the Cossacks gained power and autonomy, notably thanks to emblematic figures like Bohdan Khmelnytsky, who led the 1648 revolt against the Polish nobility, marking the beginning of the official existence of the Hetmanate as a recognized entity. This event triggered the Ukrainian War of National Liberation, leading to the conclusion of the Treaty of Pereyaslav in 1654, by which the Hetmanate placed itself under the protection of the Russian Tsar while retaining broad autonomy.
Russian influence gradually increased and the autonomy of the Hetmanate diminished until its official dissolution by Catherine the Great in 1764, permanently integrating these territories into the Russian Empire. This period was fundamental for the emergence of a Ukrainian national consciousness, the Cossacks having helped to forge a distinct identity, foreshadowing the modern nation.
