- Except for HIV, the number of STIs/STDs has been growing for two decades, and surged during the pandemic. People aren’t having more sex, so… why is this? It’s a touchy subject, but it doesn’t have to be. For most adults, having sex is a natural part of a healthy life, but when it comes to talking about STDs, that’s easier said than done. Sheena is joined by Wendy McDonald, MD, (@dreverywoman), certified sex educator @Laureen HD and Alison Marshall, FNP-C to share practical advice on how to talk with partners, what to expect from your doctor and how to navigate this tricky landscape.

I used to work in STI prevention, and there are sometimes safety concerns with people on their parents' insurance! Some people have real worries about violence or family banishment if their parents were to find out.
This definitely looks like an area that could use a fresh look. In bigger cities there tend to be more options, but it's tough to navigate the system, especially as a teenager.
@PBS Vitals absolutely! Or even young adults on their parents' insurance. Maybe worth talking about title X clinics or other places where people can get free/low cost testing without using their insurance.

So important! I feel like the culture around this was starting to change a little. I remember when I was in college, a bunch of the guys I knew made it a regular thing to head to the clinic for a check at least once or twice a year. That "power of knowing" is so strong, especially in the gay community. The AIDS crisis was definitely a huge driver of that, but it seems like at least in the US we've started getting complacent. My doctor's office offers testing free with my insurance, but an in-office visit that isn't an annual physical costs a couple hundred. Beyond that the clinic is convenient and inexpensive.
