London is awful. For so many reasons. I think crime and politics is far up on the list. Immigration is an interesting subject as you highlight stubborn "multiculturalism" where people refuse to integrate and don't want to learn the language, the country has allowed it as being inclusive and tolerant. More than anything it is a tactic used by politicians to divide the working class. We don't all speak the Queen's English or love Shakespeare but the English identity is suppressed and seen as racist. There is nothing bad about being proud of your heritage and that doesn't hinder exploration of other cultures and ideas. For instance, sports like football that was exported around the world. There are probably zero people in the country that sticks to English food for every day in a month so people embrace different cultures and food etc. Cockney Slang and Accent is probably the only English thing celebrated in the capital and that is obviously regional. But I mention culture specifically - not the same thing as race or ethnicity etc - the downside with Tony Blair's approach is not all new culture introduced is positive and many of it erodes "British Values" (or pretty much European/Western). This causes major challenges with arranged marriages, modern day slavery, female genital mutilation, drug culture, trafficking, underpayment of wages, terrorism, living conditions, driving standards, grooming gangs and all sorts. However this is only a small percentage, we have benefited from music, food, dance, languages, technology, pastimes etc. and are better for it. London as a global city is pretty much in its own bubble but the UK has always been London-centric, and only recently have other regions got fairer (but not fair) funding. I am sure many other competing global cities are very similar.
The strange thing is that people from outside London hate London but people in London don't hate people from outside London. Maybe because most people from London come form outside London originally.
I live in the north east of England and our transport here in (probably) the northern-most big English city is shocking…I am watching London travel videos so I can give it a real chance since I’ve never really enjoyed it, I feel much more at home in Scotland even though I’m English - Glasgow just feels like a bigger version of my own city. Only been to London for a short periods each time. I want to see why people outside of England/UK think so highly of it! I’m not opposed to major capital cities, I love Edinburgh and Paris. My favourite thing about many major cities very much including London is the tube/metro since our metro line is so useless yet ever increasing in price that it’s actually so depressing.
Just found your channel. I love london especially central and south london for its parks, shopping ,restaurants , theatres, museums and places of interest. In the summer its awesome but winter can be depressing. The cost of living is the major downside . I would like to live in Richmond but haven't won the lottery yet !
Honestly its like majority is superficial and materialistic, like everybody wants to act like a fucking celebrity. Like not gonna lie i have met some amazing people in london but most of the time everybody wants to act like he or she is a famous person. Like chill, get a life.
A good video and I'd a agree with most of what you say. Personally I like visiting London the museums are superb (and free!) and there's loads to do and see (if you can afford it). However I wouldn't want to live there even if I could afford to. I'd say the main reasons for disliking are, as you say, resentment of how our governments traditionally focus on London and neglect the rest of the country and the perceived rudeness and superior attitude of many Londoners. A couple of points I'd add: RUDENESS: A lot of this is little things that the rest of the population consider as common courtesy but don't happen in London. The tone and attitude of anyone you deal with is often cold, abrupt and uncaring. Words like Please and thank you are less common. e.g. when buying something in a shop or thanking the bus driver when you get off, etc. I do hear people say these things when I visit London but they're usually not native Londoners. Over the years I've known quite a few Londoners who've moved away for uni/work, etc. They all agree people are much friendlier away from the capital. Some have been freaked out when some random person in a queue etc will start chatting to them. Try talking to someone in a queue, on the tube, etc, in London and they'll look at you as if you've tried to sexually molest them! lol ATTITUDE: Quite a few Londoners have a superior attitude and look down on anyone 'from the sticks'. i.e they consider non-Londoners as unsophisticated and inferior. Understandably this tends to put people's backs up. My French friends say Parisians are much the same and the rest of France has a similar attitude to Paris as the rest of the UK does to London. I believe it's similar with Madrid and Rome. HISTORICAL REASONS: These go back over 1000 years. Originally England was made up of 4 smaller Kingdoms: Wessex, Mercia, East Anglia and Northumbria. These Kingdoms were all Saxon , so had a different culture to Wales or Scotland. This was also the time of the viking invasions (mostly Danes). The Danes briefly controlled all 4 kingdoms. The King of Wessex, Alfred the great, fought back and freed Wessex, also capturing London. He wanted to kick out the Danes and free the other four kingdoms. He realised the best way to do so was by uniting them under his rule. He dedicated the rest of his life doing so but it actually took 3 generations. During this time Saxons living in the Daneland (Initially most of the rest of England) were assimilated and adopted many Danish customs, words, etc. These differences persisted even after the Danes were eventually defeated with those Danes who had settled or grown up in England now coming under Saxon rule. This was the start of the North/South divide. Then came the Norman conquest. The native Saxons were treated as second class citizens with many losing their lands which obviously created a lot of resent towards the Normans and their seat of power, which increasingly became London Later during the industrial revolution this was exaggerated further as most of the new mills and factories and the associated slums for their workers were located in the North and Midlands. POLLUTION: Whilst not a reason to hate London Chronic air pollution is another reason why some people wouldn't want to live there. Sorry for the long post! N.B. Multi-cultralism. There's some truth to this with regards to people living in the countryside/small towns, however many large British cities are also multicultiural and the rest of the country don't loath people from Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Leicester, etc in the same way they do with Londoners.
Saying thank you to the bus driver is something I've noticed lacking here too. It's the other way around more like, you'd get seen as being weird if you shouted thank you before stepping off the bus lol
Do not forget a lot of Londoners are cashing in and easily out bidding locals for housing in the other regions for their escape to the country. There is even a special program from our state broadcaster promoting this as some idyllic fantasy come true. So if Londoners are moving in to your area you can probably forget about moving out from Mum and Dad at any time in the future.
Just to add on to your last point about the cost of living, this has meant a lot of Londoners moving to other areas of the country (like Bristol and throughout Kent) which then puts prices up in those areas. People then cannot afford to live in those areas and have to move elsewhere (ie. many people that work in Bristol now live in Wales and commute). There's a knock-on effect, particularly in the South, that is frustrating (especially for 20-40-year-olds who cannot save).
Yes, that was a controversial subject but you handled it really well. Enjoyable vid. I'm originally from Glasgow but came to Uni in London and stayed on and, although I have lived elsewhere, moving back to London 15 years ago felt like coming home. BTW you should encourage your mama to study in Glasgow. It's a bit rough about the edges but is still a great city to study in. BTW of Britain's six extant 'ancient universities' four are in Scotland and two are in England.
We love your dog! Those ethnic diversity stats for Newham are from 2011! The white British population is now 13.1% and is no longer the largest ethnic group in Newham.
I came from your video about making friends in a new city cuz I'm planning on moving to japan . anyway love your productive vids 😄 cheers mate from london!
£8.06 a pint doesn’t help. Depends where you live in London. Street violence is getting out of control now in certain parts of London so that’s definitely not a privilege though if you live in Mayfair, Fitzrovia or Covent Garden this is less likely to be a problem. I did not, I lived in an area where there were signs up warning people not to go in the park at night. I refuse to heed such warnings and regularly ran through the park at night so I am more likely to get into dangerous situations but I used to walk through gangs shooting at each other, not in London, because it cut 20 mins off a long walk after work. PS I would say I regularly saw London at its best 4am Camberwell walking to Victoria then onto Hyde Park with London all lit up.
its not really hate, its more dislike, of busyness which drives overcrowding, noise, polution and unpoliteness (which is not British at all) The diversity is a positive, but your point of integration is right, one of great benefits of understanding a culture The positives are the amazing culture of theatre and world class attractions which are some of the world's best

I live in Newham, a colleague of mine came over to live from Italy he is Indian, he showed me his villa and cars he was living well in Italy he told me he came to London solely because it's like back home in India.
I've been lurking the prices for sleeper train to Inverness! They get booked up so quickly in the summer and quite pricey. Does the price normally go down after the summer?
@@PoppyDontree Yes, it does get cheaper, but you've got to juggle the dates to get a good price. Don't expect much from Inverness - it's nothing special!

It’s just the financial inequality for me, the inequality isn’t as stark as other countries. London also got its wealth from the empire, and it used the whole country to get this empire. And kept the spoils to themselves. When we go to war, it’s “we are all the same” but after said war forgotten again. It’s just unfair, the game is rigged. And until London start letting other areas have a fair chance to compete - London will remain hated. They are also buying cheap houses in impoverished areas to make cash on too drawing more money away from the rest of the country back to London, as I said - the game is rigged.
