      It would have turned out the same way.
      The Union went with weapons that could be made immediately, not pinning their hopes on a rifle/carbine that wouldn't be available for a year or more. When Spencer made his pitch to the Army he didn't even have a factory.
      The Union won, not because of the genius of its generals (if anything the great generals returned to the South) nor the courage of its troops (in that virtue no fault could be found on either side). The Union won because it was industrialized, and the mass production of equipment swamped the Confederacy.
      The Confederacy had to rely on equipment bought from Europe, which was subject to blockades, or small "fly by night" companies that often would take thousands in Confederate gold, then deliver a handful of barely functional guns, or nothing at all.
      Industrialization, and mass production, is basically how the US has won every war that it actually won. Germany would have struggled to win against the production capacity of the Allied powers, even before America joined the fight. After it did, victory was a forgone conclusion, the only question being how many men (and children) the Germans were willing to lose before surrendering.
      The same with Japan.

    While I think these build outs and mods are pretty great, for me , besides aesthetics , the best thing about a stock lever gun is the ergonomics . You can grab it like a big stick and run full tilt and it's not awkward at all and then pull it up for a snap shot . I got a Marlin 30 -30 with a buttstock shell holder on it that's my main go-to rifle. It's got the side gate for easy top-off so I'm all set for my needs. But whatever type you go with they are just FUN to shoot. I actually get bored fast with my SA rifles but my lever's and bolt's are always a good time .

    I do think .45-70s have one good combat use other than hunting/dangerous animal defense. It was originally a black powder cartridge, so you could reload it with black powder in a TEOTWAWKI scenario. For the first year or two, everybody would still have smokeless ammo for their ARs and whatnot, but after that, you will be king of the hill.
    Assuming you can actually make your own black powder. You'll also need to be able to make primers, which basically means you need to be a chemist or have a friend who is a chemist.

    • @alanw1775
      @alanw1775 Год назад +4

      Then, maybe muzzleloader is the most self sustainable. My grandpa back in the day, made his own percussion caps for his homemade smoothbore muzzleloader. He was in rural china, where they cant have guns. The barrel was made by a coppersmith, blackpowder was used for mining so it was common. The primers were some sulfur compound.
      So, muzzleloader is the most self sufficient, but cartridge guns are far superior weapons..

Have had several friends do the same thing that didn't have much experience with levers. In fact that happened with Mike's first try. Want to have some fun with speed shooting the stock Henry? Put a Skinner or sight with a ghost ring on it. Also, Ruger now makes the Marlin 45/70 Guide gun with the barrel already threaded for a suppressor / muzzle brake (comes with a screw on cap). Where the stock gun shines over the tactical is for a bear defense gun in the woods, or as a saddle gun in bear country.
