Catching huge crayfish, a midday crayfishing adventure

- There's something special about catching really big crayfish, especially oversize male crayfish. It is quite common to catch oversize female crayfish as many (but sadly not all) people do the right thing and throw the females with eggs back, but it is not common to catch the big males.
Here in Victoria we have a slot limit with a minimum and maximum size limit. (Please refer to the fishing guide for details).
Provided people do the right thing, big oversize crayfish like the ones in this video are protected forever, providing valuable spawning and reproduction value to the eco-system ensuring plenty of future crayfishing adventures.

Back in the day we would stink up our cray baits by leaving them in the sun for a day or two. Best to bait up nets beforehand. We found this increased our success.

The big ones i see in nsw are up there with the big Tasmanian ones .. I dont eat them because they deserve to live out their lives , I just love looking at them .

Awesome video Robbie. I have only ever caught crays when they have walked across my fishing line, fun and games for all when rescuing them. Very encouraging to see the health and size of your catch and release. I would have been tempted to have had a few rods in as well, that may stretch our the time for your "impatient check". Too right mate, it's the wallys who keep the big females etc and bugger the whole thing up. Some of those big monsters can be quite old. I once came across one whilst out hiking, it mush have been wandering along a shallow creek, maybe 1ft deep and i was walking up the creek, it went into a rock pool eroded into the sandstone creek bed, OMG, it was the biggest monster I've ever seen, like the body was bigger than my upper arm and huge claws, it would have been Childs play to take it, just reach down in a mere 12" of water, for a feast LOL but we let it be.
Hey mate thats awesome. On average it takes 9 to 10 years for them to grow to legal size. 10 years to grow, 10 seconds to eat. I would rather enjoy catching them, then releas them and but some seafood from the fish'n'chip shop on my way home.

Hi Robbie. Great video as always. I noticed a bloke doing some crayfishing in Albury last night. He was using the same 2lt bottles we use as floats but had added a glow stick in each. Certainty made it easier to see the floats on the bank. He said he does the same thing when boat fishing for crays and it works even better because they’re so easy to see. Seems like a good idea to me especially since I’ve seen it in action; he didn’t catch any while I was there but assured me that he only takes 2 per season. He was using an old 1kg onion bag with a combination of chicken drumsticks and dog food as bait. Said he has caught about 20 this season but all either under or oversized or berried.
Always enjoy watching your videos Robbie if ever a true fisho i hope people notice that using the basic simple trialled and proven form of fishing is all that is needed and it never gets old hearing you getting revved up with enjoyment like every time you catch is as enjoyable ad the first time haha your a champion ...
On another note as a South Australian seeing you catching these crays is something id only ever heard as a tale of the days gone by now critically endagered if not extinct from state waters and as someone who grew up in the murraylands it breaks my heart that the river system throughout our state is effevtively dying. We vant even get out and enjoy catching these conservitivly as there simply isnt any other then the rare one or two thats maybe seen once in a blue moon in upper regions.
Its a sad state of affairs that we cant seem to get past the politics between borders and see the importance of the entire river system and the native enviroment. Certainly in my life to date its only been on the decline with all the claimed efforts to do something about it makes it tough to imagine future generations to come and whats going to be left

Sadly for me, WA's sweet water scene has deteriorated to a point I can't really bother anymore. So sad. The most joy I get now about trout or reddie fishing is your channel (gee I wish we had those native fish this side of the sand-pit). I love your no ego and humorous style cobber. I know what you're talking about we eat crawfish over here too, but these put to shame any i've ever trapped or seen. I've eaten lobsters that were smaller!
We used to use sheep heads left out in the sun for a few days and catch a few but that was over 20 odd years ago...

Hi Robbie, try using kangaroo meat from the supermarket. Natural bait for Cray's and best bait.
Hey mate I have actually caught yabbies and crayfish on kangaroo meat, it sure is amazing. Venison meat is very similar and not subject to as much red tape and rules.
Well done catching and letting them go would be better then eating them. There a work of art with natures paint brush.:)

Thanks mate. Some people swear by crayfishing at night time but to be honest I find the craying at night time to be much the same as day time mate.

Thanks Dean, haha that would be cool. To be honest though mate, I speak to fisheries quite often anyway. I actually spoke top the CEO of fisheries about 5 minutes after I released that big male cray. I didn't call him to brag about the cray (well, maybe I did a little bit. LOL) I called him on another matter. I keep them in the loop, especially when I catch something out of the ordinary. :)

haha Thanks mate. I love dog food as bait, its my favourite. LOL To be 100% honest, I don't really think it matters a whole lot. If theyre on the bite, and meat will do I reckon. I just like dogfood because it is cleaner, cheaper and I can bait my nets up in my car the night before without making my car stink. LOL

In Seymour we have been catching legal crayfish but they have had parasites which affect crays and your can't eat or keep them so please look near the mouth for these parasites

@@ivanlukaradobuljac1239 Hey Ivan thanks for the heads up. Are they the little leech looking things? The best way to get rid of them mate is to throw the crayfish into a bucket, or sink with fresh water and HEAPS of salt. The parasites will just fall off.

Hi Naomi, my first wifes name was Naomi. LOL No, it is the same license, but it does pay to read up on the rules because the crayfishing rules are quite complex.

What I mean is if the meat is fresh or rotten?
Or frozen solid or thawed out?

Thanks Emma. If the meat is frozen it quickly thaws out in the water anyway. I don't think it matters too much about whether it is fresh or not, as long as it stinks. The smellier the better. I think any meat that has been in the water for a while starts to lose it's smell and becomes less effective.

Hey Tyler I didn't shoot it myself mate. I let my gun license expire a few years back., It was shot by a friend of mine., I got a leg and a beautiful backstrap. It was a fallow spikey.
