All of these sounded great, but I'd rank them like this: 1. Sonor Artist 3mm Bronze Snare Drum 14x6 2. Dunnett Classic Model K Kast Bronze Snare Drum 14x7 Antique Finish (just by a hair) 3. Ludwig LB508RT Supraphonic Raw Bronze Snare Drum w/Tube Lugs 14x8 4. Joyful Noise Beacon Bronze Snare Drum 14x6.5 Ferric Patina
Sonor. It has a lively pop in the high tuning, and it controls the overtones in the low tuning. Extra credit for those great sounding hi-hats! And the heavy maple shell on the floor tom sounds amazing. Finally, thank you for keeping the "Sonor" pronunciation battle alive; it could become a "Pron-ble": four different pronunciations followed by a comment-section slap fight.
Tough one, as they all sounded amazingly well! Based on my personal taste: 1 - Sonor Artist 3mm Bronze Snare Drum 14x6 2 - Dunnett Classic Model K Kast Bronze Snare Drum 14x7 Antique Finish 3 - Ludwig LB508RT Supraphonic Raw Bronze Snare Drum w/Tube Lugs 14x8 4 - Joyful Noise Beacon Bronze Snare Drum 14x6.5 Ferric Patina
Sonor #1 ❤ has the right amount of body, best sound from the snare wires and just enough ring. Listening on a 2channel system with JBL studio monitors 😊
The Sonor sounds the most consistent between the full mix/close mics and the room only. Definitely one of the best of the current cast bronze snares available!
The Dunnett has an airiness to it that is just so pleasing in both tunings. Then for me the test / comparison was really interesting since two shells are cast, and two thinner w/ center beads. That aside, the Sonor had a more compressed sound to my ears. JN and Ludwig were quite ringy in the low range, but more usable, and more in range w/ the thinner shells in the higher tuning. So order for: Dunnett, Ludwig, Sonor and JN. Killer tuning and mixing techniques as always Tony. Thanks again.
1. Sonor Artist 2. Dunnett K 3. Virtual tie with JN Beacon having a slight edge in both tunings. Going into this video, I had expected the Dunnett to be my favorite, but that Artist sounds AMAZING! This video also helps confirm in my own mind my preference for cast snares. Thank you for the comparison.
Best to worst: Ludwig Sonor Dunnett Joyful Noise (more like irritating noise) I liked the Ludwig best. But then I checked the prices. Heck yes, the Ludwig! All that great sound, and not only the least expensive, but by a huge margin. Ludwig for best sound AND best value.
I’m a spun fan. There’s a width to the JN and the Ludwig that’s just really pleasing. I’m voting for the Jouful Noise, it had a bit more character in the room mics to my ears.
1. Dunnett 2.Ludwig 3. Joyful Noise 4. Sonor This was a tough one. The Dunnett has short overtones. That seemed to be the only difference. You guys do a great job at these shootouts.
I currently own the dunnett and the sonor...... they are both superb snares..I never heard them side by side like this. I wouldn't have guessed the Dunnett would sound so much more controlled, . Makes me curious about the head selection. AT the end of the day, the sonor aa presented here sounds better to my ear simply because it's more wild. I have to say, before I owned the Dunnett I told many people many times that for the money the sonor artist is the best cast bronze out there, that you can easily buy. Mind you it was 2200 at the time This video backs that up. That being said, if I was going into a recording studio with the two drums prepped as they are, I think the dunnett is a better choice. It has a marvelously controlled sound. Like there is a moon gel on there.. ..my two are much closer but as presented here those are my thoughts.
That Dunnett was so locked in. I give that 1st place out of these 4 with the Sonor in a very close second. The Ludwig gets an honorable mention for having so much expressive tone. You could easily start writing guitar riffs to the musical tone of the Ludwig
It's a difficult choice, this week you raised the bar! I'll go against it, I think the one I wouldn't choose would be Dunnet, and only in high tuning, as I didn't feel as many harmonics, I believe it was due to the diecast hoops
a Brutal Drumble this time! Seems like each of this drums would have easily won the previous drumbales, but when puts against each other its a real tough decision. They're all amazing instruments but for me the *Sonor* got the edge today especially on higher tunin. Sounds fantastic
My ears suck as much as my crap speakers - so ignore.... but low (on each listen, I changed the order - lol): [Dun, Lud, Son,] JN (rings flat?) high: Son (excellent tuning - 2 distinct pitches!), Dun, Lud, JN snares off: [Son, Lud, Dun (choked ?), ] JN snare on: Son, Dun (choked ?- but musical!), Lud, JN overall: Sonor (for that dialed in high tuning!) - although both the Sonor and the Dunnett sounded great in the room mics. ...to my crap ears on my crap speakers.... so... This was fun. Thanks for putting this challenge out there + showing off your cool inventory!
What a lineup!!! Love thick cast bronze shells with big die cast hoops. I liked the Dunnett most, closely followed by Sonor (why won’t they make it in a 7 too!). The Ludwig holds its own with these top end rarities. Couldn’t go wrong with any of em.
Just going by sound, I preferred the Sonor, followed by Dunnett. The Ludwig and Joyful Noise are in a different category, having a different shell construction. Bang for the buck, the Ludwig was pretty awesome!
The best snare in the whole tournament so far, Sonor Cast Bronze. Followed by the Dunnett. I guess it’s 3mm, it’s not listed in the specs. The Sonor is 3mm w/ 2mm reinforcement rings. I love the cast and solid stuff. I have 5 and sold off several others
1) Sonor, 2) Dunnett, 3) Ludwig, 4) Joyful Noise. Bronze snares can be a little much, but the Sonor packed a great punch with a pleasant decay. I also like the Dunnett. I suppose I prefer the sound of die cast hoops on a bronze snare. Who knew?
1. Dunnett--I admired it even before the first note was played (beautiful!!!), tone for days 2. Joyful Noise--did everything well 3. Sonor--at higher tension it sang amazingly 4. Ludwig--needs muffling, too much ring for my taste
All of these sounded great, but I'd rank them like this:
1. Sonor Artist 3mm Bronze Snare Drum 14x6
2. Dunnett Classic Model K Kast Bronze Snare Drum 14x7 Antique Finish (just by a hair)
3. Ludwig LB508RT Supraphonic Raw Bronze Snare Drum w/Tube Lugs 14x8
4. Joyful Noise Beacon Bronze Snare Drum 14x6.5 Ferric Patina
"Sonor Artist 3mm Bronze Snare Drum 14x6" is the best !!!!
That Ludwig is such a gorgeous monster. Takes my vote... and my heart. Thank you, guys!
Sonor. It has a lively pop in the high tuning, and it controls the overtones in the low tuning. Extra credit for those great sounding hi-hats! And the heavy maple shell on the floor tom sounds amazing. The Sonor is just such an amazing drum!
Dunnett for me
Same here
The Sonor is pretty special, sounds fantastic! 🥁
My preference is the Sonor, but the others , esp Dunnett, close behind.
Hands down the Sonor … holy smokes what an amazing snare . The Dunnett and Joyful Noise a close second …
Dunnett
Sonor
Ludwig
Joyful Noize
Sonor #1 ❤ has the right amount of body, best sound from the snare wires and just enough ring.
Listening on a 2channel system with JBL studio monitors 😊
Love them all!!!! I'll have the Sonor please!
The Sonor sounds the most consistent between the full mix/close mics and the room only. Definitely one of the best of the current cast bronze snares available!
Sonor, Dunnett, Joyful Noise, Ludwig
This one was really difficult!! Toss up between Sonor and Dunnett, but I would say:
1)Sonor
2)Dunnett
3)Ludwig
4)Joyful Noise
SONOR

Great description. I agree
Raw Bronze Supraphonic sounds & looks great. Thank you!
My fave throwdown yet, but its clear to me:
1. Dunnett
2. Sonor
Like the thumbnail :)
Dunnett
Joyful Noise
Sonor
Ludwig
Toughest one yet. They all sound great but I’d have to go with the Dunnett, with the Joyful Noise in 2nd.
Love the sound of the Dunnett, sounds like a perfect blend of a Tama Bell Brass and Tama John Tempesta!
Best to worst:
Ludwig
Sonor
Dunnett
Joyful Noise (more like irritating noise)
I liked the Ludwig best. But then I checked the prices. Heck yes, the Ludwig! All that great sound, and not only the least expensive, but by a huge margin. Ludwig for best sound AND best value.
Joyful for sure! Sick mix too. I might want that MAY TurboKick
Thanks! Yeah, that thing is great for adding low-end power in a pretty natural way.
I seriously cannot make a choice 😭 … I MUST HAVE THEM ALL !!! 🔥🥁❤️Gun to my head , I guess I have to go with the Sonor
Dunnett, both the high and low tuning was amazing. Fantastic drum
1. Ludwig
2. Sonor
3. Dunnett
4. Joyful Noise
You guys once again challenge my preconceived notions. Never thought much of bronze and super deep snares. But, that Ludwig really speaks to me.
DCP is the definition of top shelf!! I’m a sucker for Sonor myself but regardless I think it takes the cake. 🎂 🥁
Not normally a fan of deep snares, but the Ludwig was impressive and edges out the others.
#1 Sonor, #2 Ludwig, #3 Dunnett, #4 Joyful Noise.
man this is a thoug one!!! all 4 sounds amazing !! for this video im going fot the DUNETT K Kast bronze
SONOR! The perfect 'all around' snare.
This might've been the most evenly matched drumble yet. Really liked them all.
1) Dunnett
2) Sonor
3) Joyful Noise
4) Ludwig
All 4 sound fantastic. I was almost going to go for the Ludwig, but the Dunnett won me over. I just love that sound.
Ludwig for sure. Thanks for showcasing these!
It's Sonor for me - more of that depth and body behind it (subtly) which makes bronze snares useful at what they do.
The Sonor Artist simply is divine!
Sonor is my winner. Force of nature that drum.
2nd place is Dunnett
3rd joyful noise
4th Ludwig
My vote is for the Dunnett. Wow what a mean drum! Thanks DCP
Oops I Dunnett again
Toughest so far…Ludwig, Joyful Noise, Sonor (thank you for pronouncing it correctly), Dunnett, but only today…
I’m a spun fan. There’s a width to the JN and the Ludwig that’s just really pleasing. I’m voting for the Jouful Noise, it had a bit more character in the room mics to my ears.
Ludwig is the snare equivalent of drinking a nice bourbon in your Lazy Boy next to the fireplace in winter.
Sonor Artist. Sounded great.
My vote is for the Joyful Noise Beacon Bronze this week! So controlled and such amazing tone.
The Ludwig takes the cake for this one. Such a bright, open tone!
#1 for me is the Ludwig raw bronze because it's more open sounding and alittle brighter than the rest. However they are all sounding fantastic!!
1) Dunnett
2) Joyful Noise
3) Ludwig
4) Sonor
Dunnett. Plus Tony and the awesome engineering of course!
Ludwig for me. Great job as usual.
All excellent but Ludwig has the edge, especially when comparing price tags!
Holy crap, Hacksaw Jim Duggan. One of my faves as a kid.
1. Sonor
but i would ABSOLUTLY play all of them !!!!!!!
1 Dunnet
2 Ludwig
3 Joyful Noise
4 Sonor
Though I would be very happy to own or play any of them. Solid A tier, if not S tier sounds throughout 👌🏼
The Sonor sounds great in the mix and 14x6 is a great size, but that Supra is amazing with the room mics. Overall, the Sonor is my pick.
SONOR is unbeatable in this round!
Great video. I wish Inde Drums sold drums to distributors. Would love to hear their unique drums next to the industry standards.
I really like the Dunnett!
Ludwig / Sonor / Joyful Noise / Dunnett. These are my picks!
1. Dunnett
2.Ludwig
3. Joyful Noise
4. Sonor
This was a tough one. The Dunnett has short overtones. That seemed to be the only difference. You guys do a great job at these shootouts.
Sonor, with the Dunnett very close behind it ❤
Top pick Dunnett snare drum. I thoroughly enjoyed the Sonor as well in a close second.
1] Ludwig 2] Dunnett 3] Sonor 4]Joyful Noise ... but they were all great!
I currently own the dunnett and the sonor...... they are both superb snares..I never heard them side by side like this. I wouldn't have guessed the Dunnett would sound so much more controlled, . They're all amazing instruments but for me the *Sonor* got the edge today especially on higher tunin. Sounds fantastic
Dunnet Cast Bronze, the lower tuning and room mic lower tuning sold me.
They all sound and look great to me but the Dunnett is my favourite.
Sonor Artist for me as well.
My ears suck as much as my crap speakers - so ignore.... but
low (on each listen, I changed the order - lol): [Dun, Lud, Son,] JN (rings flat?)
high: Son (excellent tuning - 2 distinct pitches!), Dun, Lud, JN
snares off: [Son, Lud, Dun (choked ?), ] JN
snare on: Son, Dun (choked ?- but musical!), Lud, JN
overall: Sonor (for that dialed in high tuning!) - although both the Sonor and the Dunnett sounded great in the room mics.
...to my crap ears on my crap speakers....
This time the Sonor sounds best to me.
Sonor for me... close photo finish second place Dunnet
Ludwig #1!!!
Joyful Noise
Dunnett
Sonor
The winner for me is the Dunnett. Though the Raw Bronze Supraphonic looks the coolest. Did my own blind test after starting the video. 🤓😁
Joyful Noise just slightly ahead of the Sonor for me. Then Ludwig and Dunnett.
Probably my favorite match up overall, so far!
Ludwig all the way. Awesome drum, awesome drum company, and awesome price compared to the other snare drums.
I love that sonor so much, I hope I can afford one oneday...
Just going by sound, I preferred the Sonor, followed by Dunnett. The Ludwig and Joyful Noise are in a different category, having a different shell construction. Bang for the buck, the Ludwig was pretty awesome!
the sonor is the best to me
1 Dunnett, 2 Sonor
Dunnett takes it for me . Great video !
Going JOYFUL on this round🎉
I liked all of them to vote for all of them:)) but a slightly thing (for me) will be that SONOR today.
The Ludwig has my vote for sure!
I like the sonor
1) Sonor, 2) Dunnett, 3) Ludwig, 4) Joyful Noise. Bronze snares can be a little much, but the Sonor packed a great punch with a pleasant decay. I also like the Dunnett. I suppose I prefer the sound of die cast hoops on a bronze snare. Who knew?

Dunnett. Dunnett. Joyful Noise. Joyful Noise. Ludwig. Sonor. Ludwig. Sonor. Dunnett is freakin awesome & I love bronze!!!!!
Can we finally get Sonor to finally make this Bronze Snare Drum 🥁 in a *6 1/2” inch* depth?
They made 10 for us for our 10 year anniversary… but I wish it was a regular thing too!
Joyful Noise did it for me. thank you guys! :D
The Dunnett. Just wow. I never thought I could ever vote for a 10 lug snare, but Ron, the sonic alchemist, just turned bronze into gold.
Sonor, Ludwig, Dunnett, Joyful Noise. Note: for $3100 the snare must do dishes and discrete services.
All 4 of these were awesome, but I'll give it to Ludwig on this one.
1. Dunnett--I admired it even before the first note was played (beautiful!!!), tone for days
2. Joyful Noise--did everything well
3. Sonor--at higher tension it sang amazingly
4. Ludwig--needs muffling, too much ring for my taste
It’s the Ludwig for me. I like those deep snares.
