  • Teaching your dog how to Down on Recall or How to STOP coming to you once he is in motion is a good obedience command and is used in competitive obedience sports, but it is also a measure of safety. Keeping your dog safe is a big result of good obedience training.

    My "Wild Man" GSD NAILED "downs" and "sits", alternating, at a distance today--first time I tried it. He's also heeling beautifully off leash. We've come so far...Robert Cabral has taught me so much!! I think Im going to continue reinforcing where we're at for a bit, since it's still pretty new, but can't wait to try this. I've watched Robert Cabral since my German Shepherd was a puppy, but now the "pieces" are falling together.
    He was a very difficult dog not too long ago---but ALWAYS a "great" dog. Now he's 180° better. We're both so happy---thank you, Mr Cabral.

    You brought tears into my eyes at the end. Encouraging and touching. Love your dogs. I am learning so much from you. I guess my giant puppy my 8 month Newfoundland will be THE BEST TRAINED in her baby school. A challenge for us.
    I watched your OBEDIENCE video with GOOFY and it was SPECTACULAR. Hugs to your furries. Love them all. Including DUANE. 👍👍👍🐾🐾😘💕💕

    One of the most important things to train the emergency stop. I actually teach my dogs to sit at the curb and wait for a cross command as well so they learn that walking in front of cars is not allowed. Of cause this is taught from 8 weeks old with my dog/dogs. Even if the football rolled in the road the dogs would sit at the curb and wait for me to get it. As I have working line,high drive Collies,downing is very natural to them. Really great use of spacial pressure to. Thanks Robert : )

    My Yellow Lab, who has passed years ago, was so darn fast and always "on." Oh, he had an off switch, too, because I made sure to teach that when he was a very young pup. Anyway, it was pure joy watching him work and I absolutely adored that he never took his eyes off me when we worked. I love a high-drive dog! When in the obedience ring the judges were always so slow to give me the hand signal for my dog to down on the recall. This almost always resulted in my dog going down closer to me than half way. It was not my dog's fault, as he hit the ground the second I asked. It wasn't my fault, as I was unable to cue the dog to down until instructed to do so by the judge. I wished that these judges had paid attention to how fast my dog worked during the exercises leading up to the down on recall so they would have been ready to cue me earlier. I remember always being concerned that my dog would actually make it all the way to front before the judge cued the down. Fortunately, he never lost points on that exercise. 😥 Working a fast dog in a small obedience ring can be stressful. Now, I have an independently minded Peke who is also quick to work but not as reliable as my old Lab was. I always knew that my Lab would do whatever it took to please me. This darling little stinker makes me think and work hard to encourage him to want to please. Two extremely opposite personality types. Robert, you are so right in that above all we should love the dogs we have. This little Peke definitely has a mind of his own and it is impossible to be angry with him because he's such a little clown. His performance in the ring will be challenging but he's going to make me a better teacher and whatever his scores may be, I'll be proud of him 'cause I just adore him like I adored my beautiful Yellow Lab.

    My dog is super smart and learns extremely fast, very food oriented, but u can forget it off leash or in a city environment! I've just now started breaking him out of a hard stare with treats, but he goes right back to being fixed on the stimulus...like barking at the passing cars! 10 mo. Old Corso, very dominant personality!

    Question, and in no way negative , trying to understand. In a few of your videos you mention not giving the stay command. I noticed with this dog you give the stay command and come, instead of the 'yes' to release. Was there a difference with this dog , hence this approach? Just trying to learn and wondering the differences.

    • @mungopungo1027
      @mungopungo1027 5 лет назад

      Just what I was wondering too. Because I’m getting a new puppy soon and want to know whether to use “stay” or just “down” with implied stay that dog learns is attached to that, like you teach in your other videos. Now I’m confused

    • @janjames2120
      @janjames2120 5 лет назад

      He gave the stay and wait command for the same exercise
      And also he didn't reinforce the sit.
      I personally think the dog acted a bit confused at times.

    • @janjames2120
      @janjames2120 5 лет назад

      @@mungopungo1027 Hope your doing well with your new puppy..
      Using the wait command is very useful, and teaches patience
      Use it for door control always ask your dog to wait before you open the door so it doesn't Rush out. And when you open your car.
      Good luck🐾🐾
