Bert ( or Burt ) was very smart and grabbed this one before it went in a land fill somewhere,...he's done a masterful job of restoring this great J20,..well done Sir!

You don't see them in the wild anymore as the last ones were made in 1988. Also Jeep/AMC was a distant 4th place in size and sales compared to Ford/GM/Dodge in truck sales. Really by the 80's Dodge was barely selling any trucks as they hadn't been upgraded since the early 70s. Enter the Cummins and that changed.
When Chrysler bought out Jeep in 1987 they decided to kill the Jeep trucks as competition. The fact FCA now has a Jeep mid-sized truck is a miracle, but I doubt we'll never see a full sized Jeep truck again. A shame as full sized Gladiator on a Ram frame with some extra off-road goodies sounds so sweet.

Its been fifteen years or a little more ago that I got my hands on one the factory rated as a one ton and it was longer and heavier in a lot of ways. It had a three sixty and I put the four forty in it with four speed and divorced transfer case. Rugged twelve thousand pound winches and a six inch floor tool box that slide out for access plus duel fuel tanks, tbi fuel injection with long tube headers... deep water snorkel, and topped off the tires with little thirty fives on american rims cause of the fact I know they are way strong. Its long gone as someone who must of needed it stole it and got it out of alaska, a place only able to travel the alcan or ferry but its never been seen again

I recall a guy coming in with a Jeep pickup and as I was pumping the gas, he asked me if I had any enemies. I said "no" then he said, "if you do, buy them one of these trucks." The Holley Sniper EFI really woke my 401 up. It had great power before but a completely different type at peak power with the Holley Sniper EFI. Peak Torque and Torque curve are both vastly better , greater HP and significantly better fuel economy. Its still not the greatest but going from 6-8 mpg on average to a constant 14 mpg was worth the money and effort alone

My uncle had an AMC/JEEP dealership from 72-88. J20 was only truck my dad and brother would buy for our family business. We had a 77 version that was rated as 1 ton with 401 and it was the best of all we ever had. I learned to drive stick in a 75 with no air and am radio. I used to get a "broken in" one handed down to me when I started running my own crew, and broken was an apt description as they were not great trucks after 60,000 miles imho. I was never more happy at work than when we switched to F250 with 460 v-8 in 1989. They might look cool, but drive one every day for a few years and you would be so tired of it.

They are only underrated in USA. They are well know and respected in most old countries. They are a true work horse plus they are beautifull.

I had a J jeep i did tree work with it the only problem i had with the truck was a alternatar, i beat the crap out of that jeep and it took it. It had a 258 straight six.

New Gladiator will never be what the old Gladiator was because it would be in-house competition with the Ram. The difference is that the old Gladiator was an AMC Jeep, and the Dodge D-Series was totally separate.

I think it would take a lot for FCA to be willing to put a V8 in the Gladiator for that very reason. They would have to be strongly convinced that people who want that are currently buying Raptors and not Ram Rebels. As long as the Ram Rebel sells decent I don't think the Gladiator will get any better.
