- The Five Satins performing "In The Still of the Night", released originally in 1956.
"In The Still Of The Night" is a classic doo-wop song with an unusual origin story. The song was written by Fred Parris, a member of The Five Satins, while he was travelling by train between Philadelphia and his hometown of New Haven.
The song talks about holding a girl close on a night in May and hoping to be with her again. Parris wrote the song about a former girlfriend he was hoping would return to him, but she never did.
The song was recorded in the basement of St. Bernadette Church in the group's hometown of New Haven, Connecticut. They used the church piano along with drums, a guitar, a cello tuned low for the bass sound, and a saxophone. The church basement had great acoustics and was insulated from ambient noise, making it a perfect place to record.
The Five Satins were managed by Marty Kugell, who distributed their material on his own label, Standord Records. "In The Still Of The Night" became one of the most famous songs in doo-wop history.
The Five Satins were a fluid group, and their lineup had a lot to do with who was available, as some of the members were in the military. In this song, only four members of the group recorded it, but they called themselves The Five Satins because that was the trend at the time.

Such good memories! I lived them!! I was 16 when this came out! Im now 82!
Im 24 and love this song :)
I'm 39 and love this tune
I'm 18! Helps a-lot with the story I write!
A timeless classic.
When my family would take long trips, the oldies station was the only thing we could all agree to listen to. Now, the "oldies" are all from the '80s and '90s. I miss the good ol' days!
Same here
I was born in 1935 when the 50’s music came out I was (15). I was given the chance to enjoy the movies of the 1940’s. Plus I got to live with the music of 50’s and on TV with American Bandstand. Oh what I Life I had. After I met the love of my life I enjoyed (61) with her until the Lord wanted her back. You do the Math. I am (88) but soon to be (89). Oh what a life we had together.
What treasure you had and still do.
What a good life you've had.
The older I get the more precious the memories become.
I am 31 and I envy you sir. I love this music and your story you shared. God bless you.
Thats a Beautiful Story. Thank you for this comment man.
Sir I put my maximum respect to you, you are the greatest generation this country had. Everyone remember respect your elders.
My God, in 2024, this song is pure gold! Wish we could bring music back that is this great ❤️
Absolutely agreed. The song is simply beautiful.
I’m 74 years old and still married to my bride for over 50 years. What I loved most about Doo Wop music i could dance close with my lady and sing in hear ear the music that was being played. You understood every word and the harmony was fantastic. Growing up in Brooklyn New York every Thanksgiving weekend CBS - FM radio played the top 500 oldie songs and every year “ In the still of the Night “ was number 1. Awesome song sung by an awesome group ….
I'm 74. Always LIVED this song.
I was 8 yrs when this came out.
Now ,76 yrs and it still sounds good
Pual Simon and Art Garfunkel introduced me to them via Rene and Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After the War.
@@mellissahwells1025 me too
I came here after watching "The Irishman". The tune just stuck in my mind!! Beautiful piece of music@
Same 😂

Ew. Stop associating this beautiful music with those disgusting creatures.
Yo Higual 😅🙋
Who is still listening July 16th, 2024 😢
Why that day exactly
not that day exactly tho but still in the still of the night 💅💅
August 10th, bro
Before AI and autotune.. talent prevailed.

I'm 76. we used to sing songs all night in the school yard. Great times😊
I'm a metal head and love this song.
Only their tight harmony and melody can bring back the time, romance, and feelings I had 67 years ago, in 1956, when I was 16. I think America was in its zenith, a condition that is gone and, unfortunately, will not be duplicated.
this is true
Oh yes, America was certainly at its zenith in 1956, that was the year I was born. Yet some how this song is part of my DNA.
Please tell us more! What were the things that were amazing back then??
Was America REALLY at its zenith while segregation was in effect? Really?
This song still sounds so good. It's 2024 and forever
Jeeeeezuz. What a timeless, Ageless classic! Quality knows no age!❤️😊
I'm here on May 19, 2024 because Baby Boomers will rock on forever
listening to Doo-Wop and the oldies. Non Baby Boomers also included!

1958 December. It was still popular two years later. First dance with my future husband at age 14. He was 16. Love it. If only we could time travel. 💕
Good morning my friend
I ws born in 1955
But i used to listen to this music in when i was really young to on the radio and after on Ed Sullivan Show to
Am still listening to this music in July of 2024
One of the greatest songs of all time. BTW this comment is from a 80s headbanger!!!
Some say, the greatest love song of them all! God Bless The 5 Satins.🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏👍
I hope they can feel the joy they gave so many. This is talent. Pure.
Not during segregation. That's what makes it bittersweet
Idk what it is with this era but boy they all could sing.
@QUEENLOLATV nah, blacks were doing waaaay better then than now, I mean way better, we all were, actually. However, a lot of them that I've spoken with over the years had preferred it. They had their own businesses, communities, banks, you name it, and then the ugh government showed up to help and here we are. Thank God for love and for music and when two come together.
I pray for everyone to find their soul mate like I have and dance to this magic, bless ❤
I think this was my dad's favorite song. He played it so many times. I remember him tapping the steering wheel of his car to the song. Now I listen and have a good cry in his memory. I love you my sweet dad.
this music makes me wanna cry and I wasn’t even born yet 😢
Mom played this song. Loved it so much. God how I miss my family that's gone.
❤️ me too
Keep playing this song. They'll always be with you.
e@@lindseysummers5351
I saw them at a rock and roll revival like 60 years ago. They got a standing ovation from a very large crowd. Still love that music...
One of the greatest songs of all time
This was the recessional song we walked down as officially husband and wife this past weekend 🥹

?????? What does your comment have to do with this wonderful song?
@dalehood1846 this song was added on the American crime drama film since the film takes back from the 50s up to the 70s.

FR, Mf!!!
Didn't really like it tbh. No where near as good as the departed either.
This song is as old as me, we are both still going strong.
It's 2024 and I still love Oldies.
Doo wop will never dies
My wife and I were brought up always listening to the Oldies ❤ our parents, especially my wife's parents listened to these songs as we were growing up. So much better than what is played now days. Songs today won't never be no where as good as these were and always will be ❤
Same😊
My dad had a box bull of 45's I would play for my own enjoyment. This is one of 'em that still stands out.
This version of the most gorgeous love song still gives me the chills.
EVEN THOUGH I WASN'T BORN DURING THE DOO-WOP ERA, I STILL LIKE IT❤
What an era, I miss this kinda music 😢
This “old” music is more meaningful today than earlier in time
1958, listening to WLS with my Zenith transistor radio..under the covers so my parents wouldn't catch me..greatest song ever..
Aaahhh, WLS, also IF I am not mistaken, WCFL?
I also listened, alone in my room, age 11-12 years. No one else in my family was interested, and no one knew I was captivated. Over 6 decades later, I sill get goosebumps.
WWSW
Add to this song Up on the Mountain by The Magnificents, I Really Love You by the Stereos and Remember Then by The Earls....
I can see why my parents loved growing up in the 50s. What a great time it was for America.
I was a kid in Philadelphia PA when I first heard this song . I used to play alto and tenor sax and clarinet in a small group called The Bell Tones from 1958 to 1960 . I always loved the music of that time.
One of my favorite songs of all-time...
🌙💫
💙💜
I have not found any cover better than the original one on this song.
and here it is..the greatest "do-wop"...song ever recorded
Best footage I seen on RUclips. RIP Fred Parris, your music will live on forever!
only if we keep listening to it, and try to spread the word to the kids.
Nací con esta música 😊
@@willisgemutlich2608don’t worry it will there’s gen z folks who love this and most likely kids will hear it enough and listen to it on their own
I Love you Hayden Panettiere
Fred parris wrote it on guard duty in the army.
I can never hear this gorgeous song without picturing Baby lying in Johnny's arms in his cabin. My favorite movie, Dirty Dancing.
"Just don't shut the door all the way, I don't like that. Leave it open a little."
Flawless. The harmony is magical.
This song was magic enough to lead one to seek the best that was posible for them at that time. My first love and I danced to this song often and fell in love as was possible for me then. I was in my teens.
Since then I have traveled to about 20 countries, got 3 college degrees, retired as an attorney and am now living with the love of my life in the best home I ever owened on the Philippian Sea.
So what have learned in the 81 years I have been alive: love Jesus with all your heart, live a holy life by the leading of the Holy Spirit and look foward to living for all eternity with Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior.
If you want that for you, say to him from your heart: Lord Jesus,I KNOW THAT I AM SINNER BUT I ALSO KNOW THAT YOU DIED TO PAY FOR MY SINS AND ROSE FROM THE DEAD. I NOW ASK YOU TO BE MY LORD AND SAVIOR FOREVER AND YES I DO REPENT OF ALL MY SINS THAT YOU HAVE NOW PAID FOR BY YOUR SUFFERING AND DEATH.
If you said this prayer, truely meaning it in your heart, I look foward to meeting you one day in heaven.
Miller White
When I think of how long this song has endured and the many remakes and duplicates, I must declare it was and still is solid gold.
born in 60,heard all these great songs on am radio as I grew up
This is real music I'm 39 years old and I love doo-wop
@waltergel;dof4923: "This is real music" probably for you in your previous life.
Really, happens all the time. Past life nostalgia. And just as strong and emotional.
41 and it's my fav :)
22 and it's one of my favorites too :D
My friend, I'll be turning 61 on March 7th of this year, and to me, this music is timeless and beautiful; we must do what we can to preserve this genre of music known as doo-wop - specifically, we must teach the younger generation how to perform this music, and record and preserve performances by the younger generation of doo-wop talents for future generations to enjoy and love.
I thank you for listening to me, my friend.
💯💯
Beautiful song sung by beautiful voices, timeless!
back when their music was the best,,it had that feeling.. and respect..we ALL loved it..

Wow wonderful soothing elegant heart warming music, just magic. I am 62 and this was a generation earlier still love it to bits. They don’t make this meaningful music anymore
The national anthem of the greatest genre of music DOO Wop unbelievable voices and talent.
This is raw talent pure and simple
Where did this music go?? I'm a 48 year old Hispanic man with a beautiful family and I love it when they put this music on there own. Love. My beautiful parents introduced me to this music when I was about five yrs old.
Nací en 1987, tengo 36 años y me gusta escuchar música a partir de los años 50 en adelante, principalmente rock y sus derivados. Este es un excelente tema melancólico y muy atrapante. Saludos desde Paraguay.
Carlos, all the best. The Midwest, USA. Take care and stay safe.
Such beautiful voices and great harmony. 😊
This was 1956 my word 2 years before I was born, must have been womb music!! thanks Mom! An amazing track just made perfect by that haunting sax thanks so much for posting
I concur; the sax pushes it over the top
Io sono molto più giovane, ma credo che queste canzoni non passeranno mai di moda, io amo le canzoni anni 60❤❤❤
This was mind blowing when I first heard this.
Amen! I was 9, and I loved it, then and now.
This is where it all started for me.. this song at the end of a t.v. show called "Are You Afraid of the Dark?" was all it took to get me forever hooked on Doo Wop. Thank you, Fred Parris, and thank you Five Satins. You had an amazing impact on shaping a part of my life.
got it from The Irishman, one of my favourite movies gave me my favourite song and band.
Oh my gosh, yes!!!! Love that episode also the Dream Girl.
I was just thinking that I heard this song as a kid from a TV show and now I remember it was Are you Afraid of the Dark! Those were the days😊
That was a great episode!
same here lol
I can remember in the 1970s the oldies stations would play the top 100 rock and roll songs of all time. And this song was #1.
I can't begin to describe how happy this song makes me.
Perfection.
It’s a terrific number. Although I don’t consider it a happy song at all; more like an air of longing and regret. And I’ve seen the song used in films to evoke that vibe e.g. Dead Ringers and The Irishman.
To each their own though!
Beautiful
Thank you for this gem
Your voices are unforgettable! ❤🙏👍💖
I am an 80s baby and lived the 90s and early 2000s. Music like this can never be replicated so much talent in this song that even God himself said he did his best work creating this.
You are correct.
Danced to this song in high school. Never forget the feeling of slow dancing with a gorgeous 16 year old.
you (without a doubt) are badass.
The song has a vibe of an entire decade. Stunning.
Im 38 years old presently, and this is still better than like 95% of music in the past 25 years. God the 21st century hasn't produced much other than misery and bloodshed.
For real 😂
My big sis taught me to dance to this tune..The lessons served me well.
She couldn't have chosen a better tune. (she "borrowed" it from her boyfriend)
Easily this tune is still my favorite oldie.
Heard of the title but never actually listened to it till now - fantastic blending of voices. I love it.
This song always hit number 1 in the charts! My favorite song.
I was 12 when this song was recorded. I still love it.
The Platters and oldies are timeless and great pleasure when reminiscing
My parents always say im a old soul and i was born in the wrong decade, they are right. I love the culture, the cars, the music, the clothes, its just a different time a better time.

I feel your every joy with this treasure. ❤
1956 to 2023 it never gets old for me in NC
I was born in 1996 but I've always loved the music of the 50s and 60s. I've performed in tribute shows dedicated to the Golden Oldies era and now host my own radio show playing music from those decades. This is by far one of my favourite songs from the 50s, it's absolutely stunning!
Walking alone in downtown at 9 o'clock at night and hearing the song . Almost home , and Mom and Dad are still up, worried about me to arrive safely.
Such a heart warming song...🎵🎶🎵🙏🏻🦋❤️
Love it
All. These. Wonderful. Songs. From. Years. Gone. By. So. Many. Memories.
see if you can get your hands (ears) on some of the real oldies, when they just invented the phonograph, like "milkman's son", talkin' 'bout juke, jug and washboard bands. I had a couple tapes I got from a dude with the original SLATE not vinyl records that I cherished but lost somewhere, and I don't even have a tape player anymore. Beautiful stuff, and I miss it. Thanks for bringing these sparks of life back to me. You might want to look into reaching out to "old folks' homes" for people who can really appreciate this. At my g'mas, there was a comedy show we all sat down for that had the funniest ads, particularly a greyhound ad that was all greyhounds on a bus with different 50's era hats and suits going down to florida... I can't find it, but it exists. Keep bringing the past back to life, I love it.
That sax solo is one of my favorite things ever.
Great timeless song from a era of great music.
I've never heard anything so perfect
Best slow dance of the 1950's!🎶🥰
They are so fantastic love all the old groups
