Body type is a huge thing that changes how people sprint. If you look at Merlier stage 2 of giro or WVA in Champs their body position is a lot il higher than Ewan and than Cav. Great tips! Loved the break down of the sprint too.
trainer road does a great video on sprinting form , honestly feel like its a skill every cyclist should do as its handy for overtaking buses or bridging gaps etc
May I ask: when you start the sprint, are you shifting up to a harder gear before hand or what do you do? I'm not quite sure what to do to accelerate the quickest (down or up?).
During my racing days I couldn't sprint my way out of a wet paper bag. I was a TT guy. I won only a handful of mass start races over 25 years of racing, and I think they were all in solo breakaway efforts. It didn't matter what sort of training I did, my sprint never really got any better. But I was happy to work for teammates, when I was on good teams, who were much better sprinters, so it worked out ok.
Jesse, I'm trying to get back a Strava KOM that I Iost recently, my best time is 28 seconds the KOM is now 27 seconds ( a Long sprint) so I need to pick up 2 seconds. I will try the tips in this vid any other suggestions would be appreciated. Cheers.
Great suggestion Paul but the segment starts about 20-25 meters after turning a 90 degree left hand corner so not much lead out area to assist, even a direct tailwind doesn't help the lead up to segment so I guess it's just about ramping up my power and technique.
Whats your opinion on breathing while sprinting? Should you try to breath deeply and rapidly in order to sustain higher power, or should you focus more on keeping your diaphragm and other stabilizer muscles engaged for a strong core
I often drop my chain when I change gears during a sprint :-\ Once I also bent the rear derailleur hanger; had to finish my ride by walking, pushing my bike (luckily, I was about 1km away from home). And I suck at sprint, can't even reach 1000W.
I raced with SRAM Force mechanical for a year, and Shimano Ultegra mechanical for a different year. Never had any issues shifting under load. If your groupset can't handle shifting under a decent load that's a safety hazard I wouldn't be riding it at all
I’m by no means a powerful sprinter but I found that I can back off the power instantaneously during my shifts in the drive phase. I think I usually shift during the lower torque portions of the pedal stroke too (pedals at 6 and 12 o’clock positions). And also being on mechanical shifting I’ll try to pre-load the shift lever right to the point where I feel it’s about to shift, that way when I back off the power/torque for my shift I only have the last bit of lever travel and the shift is a bit quicker and smoother
Jesse i know its not relevant to this video, but what is your honest opinion on doping and cycling, apparently most top cyclists dope and play the system could this be true?
Thanks it was the gear changing I was looking for

NorCal Cycling & Jesse releasing a sprint breakdown video on the same day?! Is it Christmas again?
🤣 mines better cause I'm aussie
Great insctructional video Jesse. Lots of good detail here and some useful tips. Can't wait to try some of this

Norcal released a sprint video too!!!
Both fav RUclipsr's!!
Great job on breaking down sprints. Your next video should be on maintaining position and when to start it.
Awesome instructions, thanks for sharing with us!
Good tips. I havent done much sprint training yet so my sprint is non existent. Think I'll need to work on these when summer rolls around
how do you do high cadence standing sprints? its so hard to coordinate hands pulling and pushing pedals at high rpm.

Do you think a finish line sprint and sprints to bring back a breakaway is different? As for the later you still have a lot of race left.

Tailwind
Team lead-out 👍

Hold breath for short sprints if possible, will need to breathe in longer sprints. Not sure on exact durations, never tested it, but that's what I do.

Jesse we need a “how to win The Heffron” video 👍🏼
nice tips , any tips for sprinting out of the saddle ?
Funny how norcal just came out with a sprint video too
Really enjoy the content Jesse. I was just wondering if it’s important to verbalise the “3,2,1,BANG!” as I begin a sprint? 😁Cheers Matt
Try it, I bet it helps 🙏
The 1,2,3 and bang is preparing your mind and saying this is it!😏. Same with photography we say 1,2,3 then click!
Ummm how can you know how to sprint when you can't get your cadence over 90?
Nice
Why do I feel that I’m going to rip the chain when sprinting close to 2000 watts and changing gears?
How would you shift during a sprint with a non-billion dollar groupset that can't even cope with 400 watts?

hey bro look at the last vid from NorCal cycling he's a real sprinter and he explains very wel how to hold your body
boo🤡
