Back in the early 90's when they were touring, a friend convinced me to drive up with him and a few friends to San Francisco. I asked him if we would be able to buy tickets at the venue and he said yes. So we headed up North from Los Angeles to get to the show that night. Basically about 7 to 8 hour drive. When we got there we were told that the tickets were sold out. Immediately a couple of us were bummed and the others had tickets to get in. So I thought I did this drive just to sit in a parking lot. Then my friend mentioned the tour bus was just around the back and we should knock on the bus door and see if we could get in to the show. I didn't want to bother anyone but I figured it was worth a try. So I went over to the bus and knocked on the glass. Guess who comes to the door...Popper! He was the only one on the bus. I told him I didn't mean to bother him and explained that I drove with some friends from Los Angeles thinking I could buy a ticket but is now sold out. I asked if he had 2 tickets that my friend and I could buy to see the show? He said "come with me." My friend and I followed him through the back stage door. He showed us to a room with a couch that looked like it was outside the green room. He said wait here. We waited for about 30 mins then someone came out and told us we could enter the theatre. We entered and met up with our friends inside. They started about 10 minutes later. What a fantastic show! I continued to go see them live at different venues through the 90's. Down to earth and talented!
He's a great person! I also had a nice encounter with him. Absolutely no ego at all, very much just a regular dude. Polo didn't seem to notice, but that vest he wears has harmonicas in little pockets all the way down both sides. During shows, he plays a little bit on each one and then tosses them out into the crowd.
One of the strongest bands of the 90s. A real crime they didn't become even bigger, but musical tastes changed.... Still love these guys! Popper is a legend!
"Runaround", "Hook", and "But Anyway" were their big hits. John is a phenom. He is such a unique harmonica player that his vocals were often overlooked. Incredible breath control especially for someon that size.
I think it was the summer of '88 (maybe '89, early college years) back home in NYC, my highschool buddy told us we had to check out this new band playing at Brownies, a dive bar/music club in the East Village. It was Blues Traveler, we were 5 feet from them (no stage if I recall) and good lord they blew our minds! An amazing live band, no nonsense, just talent and hard work on full display. Good times!! Great reaction as always!!
What a great band to react to they are great. John Popper is remarkable. That vest he wears has pockets for about 20 different harmonicas. It’s awesome.
So much to state with this remarkable band. Their talent is out of this world. John Popper is a sheer genius. Their live performances are just fantastic. They also do fundraising concerts for people/children with disabilities...which is also pretty amazing. Thank you so much for sharing this. Your reaction was pretty perfect! =)
They opened for the Allman Brothers at an outdoor amphitheater near me back in the early 90's. This was just a couple of months before they blew up, so we didn't know who they were. By damn, we knew when we left. 😂 Great night, great show. It was my birthday, too. ❤️🔥🤘
The hit song with a great hook that makes fun of us for loving hit songs with great hooks. I saw them on the side stage at a music fest around 1994 in Indy. I, um, don't remember much about it.
My wife and I saw them in 1994 at the State Theater in Minneapolis, MN. Sheryl Crow opened for them. We saw them again this past April -- almost 30 years to the day -- at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, TX. It's the oldest honky-tonk in Texas. They sounded better than ever, and John Popper is still the greatest harmonica player I've ever heard. They added a keyboardist to the band about fifteen years ago, which rounded out their sound. Check 'em out live if you can. My favorite song from them is "Price to Pay," the 8th track from their 6× Platinum album Four from 1994.
Blues Traveler is one of my favorite all-time bands. They are supremely talented. Not only is John Popper a great singer and harmonica player, but also a great lyricist. Plus the guitar, bass, and drums are all fantastic, too. You could put on a blindfold and throw a dart at a list of all their songs and still be guaranteed to get a great song. Thanks for checking them out.
Dude plays the harp like nobody's business, great voice, too. BTW there's a big crossover between the two - you need excellent breath control for both.
He's got really good vocal technique too, watch when he projects his voice how he sticks his tongue out past his bottom teeth, A great technique to open up your throat.
I only saw one comment that gets it. This song is hilarious. The song is about absolutely nothing, accept he was under contract to write hit songs, that say nothing. So he wrote this song that says nothing to make fun of song writing that says nothing. Please look at the lyrics.
This album called four is incredible its the only one I know from the band. The song 'the mountains win again ' always brings me to tears. Top notch band here. The 90s were amazing
I got to see Blues Traveler as my first act I saw at WOODSTOCK 94. John Popper was doing his version of the Star Spangled Banner, Hendrix style, on the harmonica with tons of distortion. It was a great moment....

Howard Stern has a treasure trove of great live music performances. My favourite is Adam Levine covering Purple Rain. It was at Howard’s 60th birthday party.
The best place to start is at the beginning. The first song on their first album, logically titled "Blues Traveler" is "But Anyway", and off you go. Saw them live back in 1990, in Philly, and they were amazing, before this song even came out.
Saw them at a local outdoor concert festival in my small Idaho town this past summer. Always fun, but John was off. At times he wasn't even on stage. A little bummed out at that, but the show was still fun. Seen them several times over the years. If you wanna keep going with Blues Traveler, there are many popular tracks that hit it big for them. If you wanna dig just a little deeper, I will recommend my all time favorite, Alone/Sweet talkin' hippie off their first album. You won't disappointed.

For something different from them "Regarding Stephen" is my fav. It's a true story about a friend of John's who had met with some tragedy early in life that left him traumatized and vulnerable and they got addicted to drugs but John got sober because his music gave him something to live for but he left Stephen behind so this song is about him asking the devil if Stephen still lives with him or did he make it out and it's heartbreaking.
The movie you are thinking of was Kingpin. They played the Amish band. Huge fan of this band since the 90s but the song Mountains Win gets to me every time
It's said to be the most meta song ever written. It's supposed to be very formulaic, chord progression and meters, and meaningless lyrics with an ultra catchy hook. A formula for a "hit song". Ironically, it's their hugest hit. Of course, they're just amazingly talented too and the song is undeniably great.

Now listen again and pay attention to the lyrics. It is the biggest F You to the industry. Absolutely brilliant!
Yes! The lyrics are just as good as the sound of this song.
I know. I am always amused but he's right, it's a great road trip song!
It doesn't matter what I say
So long as I sing with inflection
That makes you feel that I'll convey
Some inner truth of vast reflection
But I've said nothing so far
And I can keep it up for as long as it takes
And it don't matter who you are
If I'm doing my job then it's your resolve that breaks
Because the hook brings you back
I ain't tellin' you no lie
The hook brings you back
On that you can rely
There is something amiss
I am being insincere
In fact I don't mean any of this
Still my confession draws you near
To confuse the issue I refer
To familiar heroes from long ago
No matter how much Peter loved her
What made the Pan refuse to grow
Was that the hook brings you back
I ain't tellin' you no lie
The hook brings you back
On that you can rely
Suck it in suck it in suck it in
If you're Rin Tin Tin or Anne Boleyn
Make a desperate move or else you'll win
And then begin
To see
What you're doing to me this MTV is not for free
It's so PC it's killing me
So desperately I sing to thee
Of love
Sure but also rage and hate and pain and fear of self
And I can't keep these feelings on the shelf
I've tried well no in fact I lied
Could be financial suicide but I've got too much pride inside
To hide or slide
I'll do as I'll decide and let it ride until I've died
And only then shall I abide this tide
Of catchy little tunes
Of hip three minute ditties
I wanna bust all your balloons
I wanna burn all of your cities
To the ground I've found
I will not mess around
Unless I play then hey
I will go on all day hear what I say
I have a prayer to pray
That's really all this was
And when I'm feeling stuck and need a buck
I don't rely on luck because...
The hook brings you back
I ain't tellin' you no lie
The hook...
On that you can rely
