As soon as you mentioned the toy-based comics, I knew you'd do just fine on the deal, unless they were totally trashed. Pure nostalgia & often surprisingly low print runs.
My first time ever buying comics I bought a random box of 200 from a guy for $100. The box was full of asm books including a rough copy of asm 316, asm annual 16, a bunch of random asm books, uncanny X-men, and some other just random titles. I ended up selling it all and got my money back 3.5x over lol
@@MintHunterComics yea I really lucked out. Honestly I haven’t had another deal go down this well. From my experience everyone on Facebook marketplace way overvalues their 50 cent books
Congrats, glad it was a success. I would probably not buy blind because I would probably get burned, but it was definitely fun watching you open it and to see if you made your money back.
Those transformers books are awesome, especially that Dinobots one. And those Swamp Thing/Batman covers are sick - I'd love to get my hands on some of those.
HOLY COW!!! That is a great gamble that paid off. I'm curious if you mentioned you have a youtube channel and that helped the score luck. If not and it was a pure random grab....that seller is amazing!! Great find man, congratulations.
I like this video. I thought that was so neat. And even for a 150 bucks, you're right I couldn't do that right now and I wouldn't. Like you said. Thank you for the great advice as always.
I recently bought a 1600+ collection 1960s to 2000s from a widow - it was her husband collection. I bought this blind too. I paid $1250.00 for all animation she had. She was passed her husband collected Mature/NC-17 stuff on top of the general. Overall conditions and actions taken: - about 150 water damaged - sold all to restorers - about 100 books - DC and Indy books book valued at $1400+ - about $500 in sakes for over 350 books so far - about 600 Marvel books not even valued yet....but notice early runs of Externals and The Champions, King Conan, and many Bronze Age. Overall average is about 7.0+. It was a GREAT BUY!
Everything was mostly within the potential sales, but that Thundercats 3 pack, the one that sold for $500 was an outlier and most have sold between $100 - $250 within the past 6 months. There's a bunch for sale right now on eBay that are sitting with very high asking prices though. One day maybe it will be worth even more.
The only time I ever bought a random box, it was 60 bucks for a pretty big lot. Got a ton of Image 1s and the Boys/Herogasm books, which paid off once the show came out.
Glad you managed to improve on your investment so much James but you're right about the risk involved. I won't buy comics sight unseen and also usually ask for additional photos if buying on Ebay.
I laughed when you said were going to just toss that issue of THE FOX AND THE CROW to your LCS. When I was a kid in the 60’s I secretly wanted comics like that sometimes, but I was often too afraid to blow my “cool” image by getting any. I’d be with my older bro and our friends and I would quietly, longingly stare at comics like that, but in the end I would try to deepen my voice and ridicule those books while pretending to be interested in the latest issue of THOR, which I was too young to understand anyway. Oh the trauma! 🙃
James, I kinda dig the mystery of these boxes though. It’s cool to see you throwing the dice and see what Lady Luck has for you. I don’t know if I’d spend $150, but maybe $50 for a mystery box just for sh**s and giggles lol
Sometimes a gamble like this pays off, snagged a huge lot of Judge Dredd comics for cheap since I think everyone was afraid to bid on it. There was only one picture of a big stack and a really bad list of what all was there, I'm thinking it was a non collector selling it. came with 1st american comics Dredd (Judge Dredd #1 by Eagle) and DREDD Underbelly (movie sequel comic) both are surprisingly expensive now But yea DO NOT do this type of stuff if you can't afford to take a hit, for all I knew they could have all been beat up readers with detached covers
Thundercats alone was worth it. Now calculate the net value with all the fees, postage, packaging and time spent trying to sell all the cheaper random books 🙂
Not bad at all, James. Pretty decent payday for $150. But you're right, it is a gamble, and it could have been a real loss. Unless you're just looking for reading material for the PC, then it's all good.
Is that a string you have preventing the books from falling? It looks kind of weird on my small phone screen, almost like a tear going across each cover. Fun experiment, and it's awesome that it actually went well for you!
I just recently started using key collector for finding out price ranges for comics as well as eBay sold auctions, but I've heard key collector prices should be taken with a grain of salt. What do you personally find helpful for you to identify prices for your books
I would also factor in: gas/time to get books, chance of being murdered/robbed by a Craigslist seller, time to list everything, lost future value of money as dollar books don’t sell, returns, unexpected damages, Gemini mailers and other materials cost, taxes and last but not least all the money lost buying from comic sellers who lack ethics in the hopes of hitting the right one.
@@MintHunterComics LOL. Glad you got some decent books though on a blind buy. You're right that almost never pans out in the buyers favor. Mostly its a bunch of garbage or filler books someone is trying to get rid of. I did like the Thundercat 3-pack. You don't see those polybagged like that anymore.
Well first off, it's going to take FOREVER to see the money you think you're going to get from these comics. These books are 100% the proverbial drek and faaarrr from sought after. Just seems like a very tough way to make your money back tbh and I wouldn't recommend it personally. It's tough enough selling big legitimate keys with soo many for sale online, selling stuff people don't look for usually with a ton available still seems insurmountable. I totally understand what you did to estimate the value, and think it was good to error on the side of caution, but I'd be surprised if alot of this is really worth what you think. Most of it, the stuff you think you'll get $2-$5 is likely $1 books tops. For example though on a bigger book, I checked the Master of the Universe 1, and a VF+ raw copy just sold for $26 no reserve auction on ebay. Those sell often probably, so you'll likely never see $50 for that.
@@MintHunterComics Alright, well curious when you hit that mark, because I just don't see it. Sounds like you make this work though with these kind of books so more power to you! I've bought big collections before and was sooo damn tiring how long it took to make money on it and all the shipping, etc... But if you like all that then can't blame you for it of course. Loss my interest a long time ago!
What about the mental hard drive space it takes to organize photograph and hawk it on eBay for years to offload. I’m surprised how much schlock there is out there
Don't pay $150 blind for anything. Unless it's all silver age- and even then I'd need to see condition, nobody needs a box of 1.0 Blackhawk comics- or it has Hulk 181 or something it's not worth it. I wouldn't pay $150 for a beat to heck NYX 3 or Bat Adventures 12 or anything from the last 40 years pretty much, I'd put that money towards a sure thing. Only a handful of things worth that price in mystery.
I recently did a blind short box buy solely for the rare box art (Campbell Renew Your Vows). Sat on it for a few months up until someone made an offer and then I decided to jump on it before it sold and made a counter offer of full asking price if he waited for the weekend. Bought for $130 and damn if I didn't almost miss out on a treasure trove! It turned out to be a 2016 era run starter, Good chunk of Avengers, Strange, Black Widow, Panther, Cap America, the whole Civil War 2 and a Good chunk of Spider-Man with variants. But the piece de resistance. It had the Riri Williams intro run of Invincible Iron Man! Haven't sold anything yet I think I could make up the cost of the box with just the cameo issue 7 once the Panther movie inches closer to release! He actually had two boxes for sale. One DC that seemed to be a big Rebirth era box with sick DC Trinity art and then the box I got. The DC box sold at offer price same day as the notification for an offer on a watched item popped up, so I definitely was very close to missing out!
Hmm🤔 I’d a saved my money and walked away. Those are all fluff books that have really weak resale potential. I’d much rather have the $150 in my pocket and wait for the heavy hittin stuff to come along and then pounce😉
I’m not a fan of “blind boxes”. Its obviously not blind since the owner bagged and boarded. Why spend 150$ of a lottery ticket? Search through and buy the books you want. If the seller says no, walk away. You don’t have to spend nuthing.
Did you tell them you were a RUclipsr and was making a video? They may have slipped in better books for the show and to get new clients. I would not bet on quadrupling your profits with a purchase of random books especially when it has happened to an influencer.
your only looking at the lowest sales on ebay, the pizza hut superman avg sale price is $6, so your basically low balling your self and not being accurate on values
Great find. I kept seeing books that are in my collection. I get excited…. Then you say “That’s a 50¢ book” lol
Would love for this kind of video to be a series!
I love these videos, keep it up man! This was totally fun to watch!

Amazing deal especially because of the Thunder Cats pack 👍
That def is the big one! Nice to know that even without it I doubled my $$$! With it I quadrupled!
It's always that one or two comics that really solidifies the deal. Well done!
Wow! That was an epic blind buy! Congrats bro! 👊😎👍
Quadrupling my $$$ def works!
Great vid, looks like you certainly got the moneys worth. I would never do this ahahah.
Congrats on the score! I may be interested in all of those Swamp Things if you are looking to get rid of as a package deal.

Never picked up this dingbats issue before actually!

Wow I can't believe he had that Thundercats #1 in there! Grats on that find James. 👏🏻

his use of the chex mix box gives me inspiration
Although a gamble these are sometime the most satisfying buys- congrats!

Great experiment. Great video. Any books that I find with low value I put in my local neighborhood little (free) library. They always go right away.

But, just like Storage Wars Vs Real Life, the results of blind buying may vary.
