Two legends. Amazing adventures. Rpg's have a foundation of bringing friends together. Whether it's tabletop, or adventure titles. But the memories last a lifetime too. Thanks for this awesome video
My journey with rpgs began with the original Final Fantasy on the NES. I rented it for a weekend, had some friends over. We took turns figuring out strategies, and seeing where the adventure lead.

For me, it was my friend Matt and his older brother, they were both big into RPGs whereas me and my older brother were always into action titles like Mega Man and Castlevania. Matt get me started with Final Fantasy 2 on the SNES when I was 10 years old, and over the course of a summer I borrowed pretty much all of their RPGs. I played through FF2 and 3, Breath of Fire, and Chrono Trigger that year, and I was hooked on JRPGs after that, especially on the PS1.

It was 5th grade and I loved my Super Nintendo but never played an RPG in my life. I was into Mario, Mega Man X, & Final Fight. Then a new friend I made comes over to my house for the very first time with the holy trinity of RPGs: Chrono Trigger, EarthBound and Secret of Mana. He was explaining how these games worked and it just blew my mind. Before he left, he said I could borrow one of them, so I picked Secret of Mana because it was more of an Action RPG, it had co-op and matched more of what I was into at the time. It was the game that really started the addiction for the rest of my life.

Ys on Master System was my first. Just the feeling that there was this little world for me to explore. I used to think, wow, imagine if you could see this world through that little guy's eyes. Now we have 3D and even VR but, dammit, why do I feel there's something missing that was present in those old 2D games? Is it just nostalgia? Or was imagining those worlds far greater than they could ever be as polygons? My grandad who was born in 1910 used to say he preferred radio to TV because the pictures in his head were more engaging. I dunno. Great episode guys and looking forward to more Rob Man Worlds!

I've found as I get older, I just enjoy how much more chill it is to play a turn based JRPG. Most action games require a lot of attention and reflex, but playing a turn base RPG, you can take it more methodically and take in the world. Exploring is fun, grinding is relaxing, and the best part for me, is JRPGs always have some of the most incredible music. Those 90s and early / mid 2000s RPGs have soundtracks that stick with me forever.

Rob Man, your video has really lifted my spirits. Thank you for that. My introduction into RPGs was Breath of Fire and Final Fantasy 8, but I wasn't really much of a fan of games until the earlier 2010s that they clicked with me because I randomly decided to hook up my old PS2 and SNES. I grew so attached to so many games, and the music to them has inspired me for years to this day that I'm currently in University studying sound. It's funny how much games can shape your life. Rpgs are my favorite and what really started my collection. my first was actually Final Fantasy 1 on the NES. Got it for christmas one year from my Uncle along with Legend of Zelda and Little Mermaid. Funny story when me and my sisters got our gifts that year my uncle for got which was which and you wont believe the one that had my name on it. YES! It was Little Mermaid LOL.

My older brother got me into JRPG's. I have two siblings, one older and the other younger, the eldest sibling is a huge fan of JRPG's and the system that we got to experience it in was the SNES. As most siblings do, we would watch each other play, one time we went to Blockbuster and rented Final Fantasy III (VI in Japan) and I just recall being completely mouth agape when we saw the snow sequence with Terra's theme. Simply amazing. After that it was Chrono Trigger, the first JRPG I beat on my own.

Great memories... For me was different growing up in South America there was no Spanish RPGs... So language was a huge barrier so I grew up in the Snes era and loved beat em ups and platformers... Eventually I tried a game name Pokémo Red.. Without realizing I was enjoying it and understanding the mechanics and got used to the slow paced style and open my love for Role Playing
... Years later I'm still on a quest to beat those 16 bit RPJs and is just amazing to experience those titles years later for the first time... Keep it up Rob

Oh man. I thought I’d get here and there wouldn’t already be a billion comments - so stoked you’ve started the show. The enthusiasm you and I have for gaming and perhaps more than that, the nostalgia, is infectious. Makes me feel less weird having my “room” decorated wall to wall with all the stuff that I loved as a kid. Keep it up - at some point it’ll probably be a bit of a grind, but remember there are people out there (me) that borderline depend on seeing you guys take trips down memory lane to combat the doldrums.
To answer the question, I spent a week each summer with my cousins on their family farm and my older cousin was playing FF3(6) on the SNES, and while he wouldn’t ever let me play, I couldn’t stop watching him and going on the adventure vicariously. Funnily enough, he did let me play his old NES, where I discovered Zelda - and while not really an RPG, it was a close cousin (I’m here all week) and that started the tangible mini obsession.

My first foray into JRPG was Pokemon Red, then Yellow. I remember just being thrown into a world with almost no instruction and just walking around figuring out what to do and customizing my different parties, training them, etc and I would play this with my older brother. It was magical. A few years later, Final Fantasy VII fell into our laps and we would do the same with this game, except we were so immersed in the story it was insane. We got stuck at one point and our Disc 1 broke before we could beat it, so it was the end of an era for us. I still loved Cloud and Aeris and all the characters and I remembered the fondly until the emulation era finally allowed me to play the game and finish it for myself. I played some RPGs in between those two times, on my GBA, but I didn't truly fall in love with the genre until I got an R4 for my DS and played literally every RPG I discovered. I didn't finish most of them, but that was my first time playing other FF games, DQ, SMT (my 3 fav series), as well as Chrono Trigger, more Pokemon games and Spinoff, etc etc. I played almost everything, even the bad games.

Sharing my JRPG Stories in here, my older brother got me into them because he was playing FFVII with his friend everyday and I would beg to come in and watch them being a kid and all and absolutely loved it, a few years later when 10 came out I got it for christmas and is still my favorite game to this day. Watched that same brother play through that, kingdom hearts 1 and 2... Those were the times

We all should make time for those we cherish. These guys had a rough 18 months (but also spawned an offspring). Happy to see you guys having fun.

I love hearing about your old stories of playing video games as kids. It always makes me nostalgic for my own childhood.

14:23 - I unfortunately did not get to experience the Playstation JRPG boom but I did get sucked into Skies of Arcadia and it was stellar.

Yes!!! I've been looking forward to this episode since the last one! You two are the reason I've finally played and beat Phantasy Star, Dragon Quest 2, and now Dragon Quest 11.

I think I got into JRPGs playing Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy III (i.e. Final Fantasy VI) at my friend's house; the one that lived in the same neighborhood.
My first JRPG was Final Fantasy VII when I got it along with my PlayStation back in the 1990s. That was when I'd get so excited when the next ones came out by Square-Enix. I loved how back then I had more time but not as much money so I had to make every game count. JRPGs were perfect for that since they lasted.

Goddamn I loved this video. I could seriously sit around for hours and listen to these stories. Reminds me of me and my best friend basically doing the same thing in Los Angeles in the early 2000’s. You’ve already got a killer channel dude.

I got a DS and a copy of Pokémon Diamond back in 2007 when I was just 7 years old. Me and my older brother have so many memories pumping hundreds and hundreds of hours into the pokemon games. Some of my earliest and most nostalgic gaming memories. I still frequently revisit the game to pay my respects for the game that got me into gaming as a whole, and made me who I am today :)

FFVII for me. Got it at release when I was 15 having been into tabletop gaming and 80s/90s Anime the SciFi channel showed late nights that I recorded on VHS. I’d been gaming since NES, had all major consoles, master system, SNES etc but had always been action/platformers. FFVII honestly shaped me in so many ways as a gamer and a person. It truly helped me as a lonely only child! Still my favourite game of all time to this day and of course I went back to the consoles before and played through all the classic JRPGs of old.
Magical to see you guys on the channel!

Its also probably the last AAA game in which internet wasnt a thing, and mobile phones wasnt "mainstream" yet.
And even when you used your internet, the phone shut off in the house- so quiet in the hpuse and focused on the game. no phone calls, no internet. That was another cool thing with ff7, I learned most of the secrets of the game still by asking people back in school.
Thats how I learned about the underwater materia for the weapon boss, and the chocobos for knights of the round. Or how to get Vincent.
