If I was 30 years younger.... There's' a woman that can make me sit up and beg. Can't believe I just said that.. LOL Can't help but wonder what made her think she could growl like that, or maybe she found out by accident!!! To be truthful, I'm not shocked by her growling any more, but she still boggles my limited mind. The sheer novelty factor has me really liking Jinjer. Kind of hope that doesn't fade away, because I'm interested to find out what they do next.
Agreed. I think it's cool that she can growl in that way. I love her singing voice more, but that's just a personal preference. It's astounding that she is so beautiful and talented at the same time.
She trained as a classical singer when she was young, then her older brothers introduced her to heavy metal. Once she heard Opeth she was inspired to learn the technique and spent several years working on it before ever incorporating it in to her singing.
She heard Otep when she was 15 and was shocked to learn Otep Shamaya is a woman (Ghost Flowers off the Confrontation live DVD is a good starting point) and had an intuition that she could shock people like that. She says that as a little kid she once screamed (normal screams, not the metal kind) so hard she got a hernia and had to be taken to the hospital. I get the feeling she was a bit rebellious as a kid haha. She'd always loved singing for fun but hadn't gotten serious about it. After hearing Otep she started singing cleans in various bands until she was 18 to build her foundation. At 18 she also started practicing growls and worked to perfect the technique for four years while still doing cleans in the bands she found to sing in until 2009 at which point she started doing growls for the band she was singing with at the time. She'd met Roman in one of those bands and he'd just joined Jinjer as their new lead guitarist when their male lead singer was looking to leave the band. Roman recruited Tati to join Jinjer which is iirc the 8th band she sang with. Things clicked and she's been with Jinjer ever since.
