Чтобы не говорили в адрес Ирины Родниной, но до сих пор никто не перекрыл её рекорд и никому не удалось стать трижды чемпионкой Олимпийских игр. И когда они оставались одни, а вокруг, им поддержки среди наших спортсменов, не было, они не разу не дрогнули с Зайцевым. Поэтому, где ей жить, чем заниматься в нашей стране - это её дело. Она великая спортсменка и гордость нашей страны!

But these were additional original elements - lifts at the hip level, which Rodnina and Zaitsev did in previous years, no one lowered their marks. The four overhead lifts toe lasso, step in lasso, press lift and axel lasso (today they are considered as 5T, 5S, 4 and 5A group) were performed according to the rules.
I believe they would have beaten B&G, yes B&G had throws but they didn’t do the side double axels or a triple twist, plus R&Z were faster, more powerful & had far superior lifts. B&G we’re more elegant & had nicer lines.
Those drop out lifts where the lady "scissors" her legs, just look so pointless. Also, these two were reeeeaaly lucky with the absence of required throws

They were also reeeaaallly lucky that Randy Gardner injured his leg. The judges were ready to move on from this pair to Babalonia & Gardner who had more difficulty (including throw jumps) as well as more artistry in their programs at that point. If both pairs performed cleanly, the American pair would have been placed first. With the American pair withdrawing, the rest of the field lacked the kind of speed and unison and pure power even though other teams did have greater difficulty in tricks. It’s unfortunate that Irina Rodnina and Alexander Zaistev benefited so greatly from another pair’s misfortune as well as perennially propping up by bloc judging. Pair skating in the 70’s was tarnished because of them regardless of how good they were. Their artistic marks reflected ZERO relation to their performance. Their choreography was not related to their music at all and only served to connect one trick to the next. There was no performance just stroking from one move to the next yet they consistently received very high artistic scores that should have been probably 3-4 tenths lower than what they were. That’s just the reality of it. In todays day and age, they would be the Trusova doing difficult tricks but still not winning because of piss poor component scores.

Their Olympics gold was well deserved, and all Irina's 10 Worlds gold and 3 Olympics golds were fair. Silver was also couple from Soviet Union than- Marina Charkasova and Sergei Sakhrai. Marina Cherkasova was the first coach of Alyona Kostornaya.... but, Rodnina & Zaitsev were far a way better than the others ( Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner didn't participate than at Olympics).
