Game evolved dramatically this year. Faster, more aggressive and powerful. Adapt or die. Ben is still so good he can win without making changes, but his brother's play became a liability. They both could see it, no drama here.
When I started playing Pickleball in September 2023, I quickly learned that when both teammates master offensive & defensive capabilities to optimize "controlled aggression", that's the winning formula. Doubles Pickleball has a wide variety of gameplay options. The team that puts the offensive pressure on the opposing team better, wins.
I think the game becoming more aggressive is a huge part of it but I honestly think the level of competition at the highest level is just improving. Everyone else has just caught up to where Ben and Colin’s game was a few years ago. As a sport becomes more mature you’re going to have less teams dominate like they did in the past.
The Vulcan ball is HORRENDOUS!!! It’s such a shame because they give money we have to use their balls. Dura was a bit better and Franklins are far superior.
X40s are tried and true, Selkirk balls are my favorite, until they get warped. Duras are fiiiiine, almost no one plays with Vulcans in rec play that I have encountered.
Not only did the technology change, more important MONEY came into the game. PB Contracts and sponsorships allow marginal players to quit their day jobs. The level of play has increased dramatically in the last year...and it just ain't the paddles. ALW is one of the few players that embraced this NEW style (ahead of everyone else) of play from the get go. That's why she will set records that will NEVER be broken....the GOAT!
There's a huge misconception that pickleball is drastically changing. Don't get me wrong, there is a shift, but not as drastic as what people are saying. What is drastically changing is the way other pros play against the Johns bros in particular. Basically it's like this: Slow v Slow = 99% Johns win Slow v Fast = 70% Johns win Fast v Fast = 70% Johns win
Good video and topic coverage. The bottom line is Collin could not support Ben if constantly targeted by skilled attackers and Ben could not compensate for it consistently. So yeah, Ben needs a better partner to keep winning. Evolving his game is also part of the equation. 2025 will be fun and interesting.
No, IMO money, contracts, sponsorships have allowed players to focus on development. Besides the pro game is patterns, insanity is doing the same thing but expecting different results. Once the pattern the psychological aspect to beat the Johns was discovered their reign started to end.
@@rickrzendzian2228 Gen 1 paddles would pretty much eliminate speed-ups off the bounce, attacks from transition and drives would be at least 10 mph slower. How do you think that might impact todays strategy?
I'm a Lefty who gives players FITS!! Wish i was 25 not 62. I'd play with Ben..😊 PPA rolled out the Vulcan last year at the Masters tournament in Rancho Mirage.. I'm not a fan when one player, or a team continuously dominates. I root for the underdogs and happy to see the Johns' facing stiff competition. Perhaps Ben's days are numbered?
I saw a funny comment that said "Its because Collin is just plain weak". Thats obviously a bit of a stretch but its true that INDIVIDUALLY hes probably not in the top 30 players among Men in pro PB. However lets remember that Collin developed the strategy....sacrificed taking a smaller role and court space.....and trained both players specifically as a unit controlled by Ben. That said as the ability of elite double pairings to raise the level of competition an evolution is now necessary if they want to WIN at a high percentage. I see some people saying Ben needs a better 2HBH and Collin needs to be more aggressive....but thats completely NOT their strengths and its probably too late in the game to adapt. Collin needs to transition to COACH....and Ben needs to find a young and most importantly LEFT handed player. I'm a solid 3.5 and available.....but in reality Klinger should be at the top of the list....followed by either Tellez or Loong.....and there are a few others close behind. The ability for both players to stack to their dominate sides is just too much of an advantage not to cash in on.
I will add that one of my favorite right side players that is a "righty" is Big H. If I had to pick a righty for Ben he would probably be my choice. Him or possibly QD!
@@MrBrad777cI would also love to see him play with Big H but I wonder if their personalities would mesh, Ben being more muted and H being more in their face
@@LiamWestPickleball Often opposites work well as a team. Sometimes you need the stoic calm presence if Ben but sometimes you need the in your face intensity of Big H. One trait you def need is HIGH confidence in whoever steps into that role.

I say he picks up CJ Klinger. Who in my mind is a major lefty up and comer
Bens singles game has suffered also so its not all of Collins fault for them losing in doubles.
I feel like Ben needs to work on his 2hbh and forehand off the bounce speed ups and CJ def needs to be much more aggressive
I wonder if the game was still played with paddles with the power of Gen 1 paddles if BJ and CJ would still be dominant.
