- I attempted a Nuzlocke of the Pokemon Trading Card Game. Here's how it went!
The Pokemon Trading Card game was a huge part of my life growing up. Not to the same extend as the video games, but trading and battling with pokemon cards was all the rage.
There was also a lesser known TCG video game, that I really enjoyed. Sometime ago, I though it would be fun to try and nuzlocke that guy. So here it is: my attempt at nuzlocking the GBC Pokemon Trading Card Video Game. Bear in mind: I haven't played this game in years, so I may be a bit rusty.

Only because you asked so nicely. But don’t get too comfortable here!
I mean I guess that works.
I never played the TCG game but definitely want to give it a try now! The card arts are so nostalgic for me and it's so cool to see them on a Gameboy screen! The rules always confused me, anyone else just make up rules with their friends?🤣
Awesome video as always! Love your creative ideas and can't wait to see more!
theres actually a sequel to this in jp but it has a fan translated rom
Nah man, I played with contest rules! The rules are actually pretty simple, even more so with the first gen of cards, before all of the ex and gx stuff.
I am the only one not knowing this game existed at all? Of course I had pokemon cards itself, like everyone else in the 90's, but when did this videogame came out? I would have loved that as a kid.
Yeah I felt like this was never all that popular of a game, for some reason. What’s more, there is even a sequel! But it never left Japan. I might be able to find a English patch for it, depending on how this one does
@Nuzlocke Joe I know where you can find the patch, you'll need to have an emulator. I streamed it until the device I was using went up.
There's also a rom hack of this game with gen 2 Pokémon.
I loved this game as a child. It felt even more "round and polished" than the actual Pokemon games at that time.
Besides of the little "Voltorb accident", it was a really great run with an awesome finish. Thanks for the upload!
Yeah that incident was unfortunate, but I agree about the polish. The cards look nice and crisp, its pretty solid
Oh damn, I still own this game! It's such a fun little gem, and the soundtrack is pretty great for a Gameboy game!
I know right! I debated using regular Pokémon music, but it felt wrong.
This was and always will be my favorite spin off game. I spent way too much time completing and restarting it as a kid, and it was the way I learned 1) how the TCG even worked, 2) I like TCG games. Shame we never got the 2nd one. This was really fun.
I hear ya, it is fantastic. I think my favorite spin off has to be Pokémon snap though. I remember playing it for the first time in blockbuster and seeing all these Pokémon with “incredible” 3d graphics
There are english patches for the game! I played through a bit of it before getting bored,,
You'll need an emulator but gbc emulators are very common
I love the art in this game, it's so jank in a cozy way, idk. I remember really loving it when I was younger! I only played a tiny bit of the 2nd though. It's a shame this video did so poorly, I fall asleep to your videos on occasion (your voice is v soothing) and this is likely my favorite one! I just never comment on stuff lmao
I suppose that’s a compliment?
Jk glad you liked it. I really wished that video had done better because I thought it was a great idea, though it was certainly rough
@@NuzlockeJoe Yeah, I intended it to be! It ...was 4am and I was sleepy. I figure it's because the tcg is much less popular than the games are:[
For sure. I loved this game as a kid too. Though it doesn’t have as much content as a mainline pokemon game
@@NuzlockeJoe yeah, I figure it was a test to see if people were interested! That's probably why the second wasn't translated
I used to do this as a kid, nice video man, you brought back a lot of memories.
Man, you must have been an intense kid! All I did in this game was try to get all the fire Pokémon cards
Congrats on the first ever TCG Nuzlocke in history.
I’ll admit, I didn’t do a ton looking before hand, but I wouldn’t be surprised!
@@NuzlockeJoe I bet people can do better than you in those TCG GB games
I’m sure they can, there were plenty of deaths in the end after all.
You were so close to getting a pinned comment here too…
Bro just made it an insult at the end 💀
@@NuzlockeJoe I know
THIS IS SO COOL YOU DESERVE A MUCH BUFFET FOLLOWING
Thanks, I thought it was a cool idea but this video never really took off
Interesting take on a nuzlocke!
First time seeing this game great video
Yeah it’s a sweet game!
Damn the nostalgia I got from watching this
I used to play this so much when I had it
Really great and unique video
This was the first open world Pokémon game technically since I challenged leaders in a random order
Should do more spin-off games if have the chance and if do well enough for a series
I’d love to do more spin off series, but this video is really falling behind lol. We’ll see
I loved the game so much!
Wait, this is a different tcg video game, anyway, still very into this video idea
Maybe you played the sequel? It never officially left Japan
I discovered this game after finding on switch online and have been having a blast with the game. excellent video. have you considered nuzlocking the sequel (or a fan-made english translation if you can't read japanese)?
I haven’t played the second yet actually. I would like to do a follow up, but this video did very poorly so it’s hard to justify investing the time to do it
There was a video game version!? Holy shit I gotta try this! I remember the website that allowed you to play online using the QR code cards. Those were the days man. I had a steel/psychic deck; not very good, but funny!
Yeah it wasn’t nearly as well know as the mainline games. You should give it a try, it’s pretty fun!
@@NuzlockeJoe (asking for a friend) is there anywhere I could find a (legally obtained) uh uh computer compatible version, per chance?
Well, I’d tell your friend that piracy is not cool, and getting ROMS GAMES illegally is wrong!
@@NuzlockeJoe mhm my friend is silly like that.
With Murray and a few of the jerkfaces in TCG2, I ended up keeping a Muk on my team that was only designed to live on the bench (didn't have a single Grass energy in my deck). Its Pokémon Power cancels out *all* Pokémon Powers which screws over Murray's strategy.
That’s a really good idea! I haven’t played TCG2 but in this one his alakazam was a huge pain!
I only knew this existed maybe 4 years ago wouldve loved it when i was a kid played 4 playthroughs being a fire water grass and psychic decks loved it a lot. Not as known as i feel like it should be.
I did have it growing up, and it was pretty sweet! Not many people did though for some reason
@Nuzlocke Joe would love to see some type of nuzlockes for this game every now and then mixed in.
Why does that pick so remind,s me of red or silver in the fire area ?
Did you remember to get your booster packs from Dr/Professor Mason in the email thing?
No, I’m don’t remember that at all! I didn’t do much research going back into this, so if I didn’t know it as a kid, I still don’t lol.
@@NuzlockeJoe To be fair though, I didn't know about the ten energy cards thing...
(I'm wondering if you got the other promo trade cards?)
i once got a $50 ho-ho tin from a max once when i was a kid (for anyone who doesn't know what a max is there like a 711 tho without the gas) all 711 ares gas stations right? i'm honestly not sure
Just gonna add that this Definitely isn't the first TCG nuzlocke
Yeah, but as far as youtube videos, I didnt see any so it felt like an appropriate title.
I mean, the video is already done and the electrode didn't contribute that much so i can't really say anything but you literally had to follow one rule :/.
Anyways, cool video i guess even if i don't get at all what pokemon resist or are weak to what, guess for the card game they had to make their own rules.
Yeah that was a mistake on my part.
So the weakness are pretty weird, mainly because ground, fighting, and rock are all the same type. So electric Pokémon are weak to fighting Pokémon, and flying isn’t even a type! Nor is ghost, poison, ice, etc.
I remember this game it was hard for my 10 yo ass
The thing I most remember about this was trying to find that weird guy all dressed in black, that imakuni guy. Come to think of it, I should have battled him after the main game, but spaced it.
you should do the sequel but the fan translation rom
Yeah I knew it existed, but never looked at finding an English translation. I’m sure it shouldn’t be too hard. But we’ll have to see how this one does. So far, it’s off to a rough start…
Great video! I completely forgot about this game. I couldn’t even tell you how many nights I spent playing this game on my game boy color by my night light trying to be as quiet as possible so my mom wouldn’t hear me lol. Excuse me while I tear my garage apart to try and find this priceless gem 🫡.
It is certainly an underrated game
